Reunion Nearly Complete, Pixies Look Ahead
By Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
With the first phase of its reunion nearly complete, the Pixies have begun contemplating the future. Having wrapped a North American run with a Saturday performance at the Across the Narrows festival in Coney Island, N.Y., the group will close out the year with six shows in Japan, beginning Dec. 3 in Fukuoka.
What will happen afterward is anybody's guess, but guitarist/vocalist Frank Black tells Billboard.com the group will hopefully begin gathering potential material for its first studio album since 1991's "Trompe le Monde."
"I think there are some band members extremely keen to start making a record and there are others who are more cautious because they don't want to mess with the legacy," Black says. "They may be afraid that if we make a mediocre record that it will still come out, because the money has been spent. That's fair enough."
For now though, Black offers, "We've decided there is nothing to talk about unless there's some actual songs on the table. In our spare time we'll start to compile some demos, and if they start to sound good, we'll do something."
The Pixies did release the new song "Bam Thwok," penned by bassist Kim Deal, as a digital download in summer 2004. There is also one unfinished Black song from those writing sessions.
"Kim reminded [guitarist] Joey [Santiago] she liked my song and maybe she'd do a lyric on top of it, which is fine, because I've written lyrics for it like three times and have never really been satisfied with it," Black admits. "'Gigantic' part two is in the works! And it's going to be bigger and better than the first one!"
As previously reported, the reunion is chronicled on the DVD "Pixies Sell Out," released earlier this year via Rhino. Along with a complete show from Belfort, France, the film sports performances from a variety of other large festivals and amusing footage of the band offstage, including an impromptu Thanksgiving dinner in Canada.
"They're not too big on Thanksgiving up there," Black recalls with a chuckle. "Our English tour manager, not really being familiar with the feast, did a nice thing and booked a private room for us to be served an American Thanksgiving. But they were these French-sized courses. It wasn't a bucket of mashed potatoes, the giant bird and piles of food. Instead it was like, 'And now, we present.. the pumpkin soup! Voila!' It was us and our crew so it was a little stiff."
Black admits the band also felt a bit out of its element when it performed acoustic for the first time in its career at August's Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island.
"It was not that much fun," he laughs. "I was amused enough but it was harder for the rest of the band. Especially Joey, trying to do his thing on an acoustic guitar. We didn't have much practice on turning the outdoor stage situation into something that could be intimate. To the folkies, I'm sure we just seemed like a rock band feeling a bit awkward with their acoustic guitars. We don't really have a lot in our picking style repertoires!"
The Pixies Trying To Figure Out The Future Of The Band Friday October 07, 2005 @ 03:00 PM By: ChartAttack.com Staff
With The Pixies extensive reunion tour nearing its conclusion, the band's fans now want to know, "When is the new album coming out?" After six shows in Japan, beginning December 3, The Pixies tour will finally be finished and the process of recording a new album may finally begin.
Guitarist/vocalist, Frank Black told Billboard.com there isn't much to talk about it right now, as there aren't even songs written for the new record. However, when the tour ends, he says they'll start compiling demos and if they sound good, they'll start recording.
If recorded, the LP would be the first Pixies record since 1991's Trompe Le Monde and the band know they have a large legacy to live up to. Black says some members of the band are excited by the prospect of recording a new album, while other members are intimidated by the possibility of ruining the Pixies legacy.
"They may be afraid that if we make a mediocre record that it will still come out, because the money has been spent. That's fair enough," Black says.
The Pixies have written a couple songs since their reunion. "Bam Thwok," written by Kim Deal, was released in the summer of 2004 as a digital download. Black has also written a song that Deal plans to help out on the lyrical side. Black describes that song as an even bigger "Gigantic." "'Gigantic' part two is in the works," he joked. "And it's going to be bigger and better than the first one!"
The band's DVD, The Pixies Sell Out, was released on Tuesday. It features a complete show taped in Belfort, France, footage from other festival shows and contains additional footage of the band having a Thanksgiving dinner in Toronto.

Pixies on gigantic legacy (Friday October 07, 2005 02:42 PM)
The Pixies are stalling over recording a new album amid fears that they may damage their impressive rock'n'roll legacy, Frank Black has admitted.
Last year's reformation appears to have been a complete success, with the group selling-out shows across the globe and not displaying any of the acrimony that once surrounded the Pixies.
Plans to record a new record, which would be their first since 1993's "Trompe Le Monde", have been mooted and reported numerous times in recent months, with Black now clarifying the facts.
"I think there are some band members extremely keen to start making a record and there are others who are more cautious because they don't want to mess with the legacy," he told Billboard.
"They may be afraid that if we make a mediocre record that it will still come out, because the money has been spent. That's fair enough."
Black concluded: "We've decided there is nothing to talk about unless there's some actual songs on the table. In our spare time we'll start to compile some demos, and if they start to sound good, we'll do something."
Meanwhile, the Pixies released a brand new DVD, entitled "Sell Out" on Monday, containing a full concert performance and highlights from lat year's reunion tour.
The full tracklisting is as follows:
'Wave of Mutilation' 'Something Against You' 'River Euphrates' 'U-Mass' 'Bone Machine' 'Cactus' 'Ed Is Dead' 'I Bleed' 'Monkey Gone To Heaven' 'Hey' 'Levitate Me' 'Subbaculture' 'Dead' 'Gouge Away' 'Velouria' 'Mr. Grieves' 'Crackity Jones' 'Broken Face' 'Isla De Encanta' 'Tame' 'Here Comes Your Man' 'HolidaySong' 'Where Is My Mind' 'Vamos' 'Wave Of Mutilation' 'Gigantic' 'Velouria'
Bonus performances:

Frank Black: Pixies Scared Of Ruining Their Legacy By releasing bad album...
by Daniel Melia on 10/7/2005
After stating that they were one fight away from a new album Frank Black has also revealed that Pixies are also scared of damaging their legacy by releasing a bad album.
Having not released an album since 1993’s ‘Trompe Le Monde’ many fans are hoping that the recent reunion tours may see the band enter the studio together too.
However, Black says that some members are a little hesitant, he told Billboard: "I think there are some band members extremely keen to start making a record and there are others who are more cautious because they don't want to mess with the legacy.”
He added: "They may be afraid that if we make a mediocre record that it will still come out, because the money has been spent. That's fair enough."
For now Black says they’ve decided to go with the flow, he says: "We've decided there is nothing to talk about unless there's some actual songs on the table. In our spare time we'll start to compile some demos, and if they start to sound good, we'll do something."
07 October 2005 Pixies to start work on new album? With their tour set to end in Japan in December, reunited legends the Pixies are turning their attentions to the future and perhaps a new album.
Speaking to Billboard.com, frontman Frank Black said it was hoped that the band would begin work on material for a new album, the group's first since 1991's 'Trompe le Monde'.
"I think there are some band members extremely keen to start making a record and there are others who are more cautious because they don't want to mess with the legacy," said Black.
He continued: "We've decided there is nothing to talk about unless there's some actual songs on the table. In our spare time we'll start to compile some demos, and if they start to sound good, we'll do something." |

Pixies star gets some extra special help on new album
A host of legendary musicians join Frank Black
Pixies frontman Frank Black has returned to the studio to rejoin some of the musicians who helped him make his last solo record 'Honeycomb'.
Steve Cropper, Reggie Young, Spooner Oldham, Anton Fig, Chester Thompson, and David Hood were joined by Levon Helm, Al Kooper, Ian McLagan, Cheap Trick's Tom Peterson, Simon Kirke from Bad Company, Lyle Workman, Marty Brown and Jack Clement - as well as producer Jon Tiven - to record 25 new songs, most of them Frank Black originals.
The sessions took place in Nashville, first in October of last year, and most recently last month when Black was in Nashville for the Americana Awards .
Still untitled, no release date has been set, but the new collection should be finished and available in 2006.
Tiven said of the album, "Until we decide how many and what tracks will make it onto the new album we won't know for sure what the musical direction will be. But it's going to be great."
Pixies' brand new DVD, 'Pixies Sell Out', was released last week (October 3) and the band will tour Japan in December. As reported on NME.COM last week, the band are still deciding on whether or not to make a new album together.
Pixies Consider Comeback Album Oct 10, 2005
The Pixies may make a new record, or just keep milking their legacy, after a set of new songs are written.
Front man Frank Black told Billboard that his band mates are split on the idea of making a new record, saying some fear they may end up issuing a sub-par album simply to meet contractual obligations. The alt-rock icons are set to start writing new songs for consideration for the record that’s under consideration.
Black told the magazine that members of the band “don’t want to mess with the legacy” of The Pixies with a new album. The band’s been entirely enthusiastic about cashing in on that legacy, with a string of live releases and an extended comeback tour.
