i hate people sometimes.
me and some flatmates and some other people are chilling in our kitchen, listening to some music on MY FUCKING HI FI that i brought down, having the usual gay student conversations like politics and philosophy and then someone starts talking baout david lynch, and being the pixies fanboy i am i say, oh have you heard that cover of the radiator song and he goes no. someone put feeder on and i was like whatever so i grabbed my pixies b-sides thing so they could listen to the live cover of it... and then a couple of tracks play after it and then someones like, omg the pixies are shit, did you see them at reading, they are so dull, every song sounds the same and the guy can't sing........
MY FUCKING ANGER! these are all psuedo friends cause face it i've only known them two weeks, so i'm not as open about how fucking stupid i think they are. but it's like... gay. so the one guy puts feeder back on... and seeing as how my pixies fanboysm is already out in the open, i state in a joking tone that, FEEDER ARE JUST A PIXIES RIP OFF BAND, THEY USE THE SAME PRODUCER AND IF YOU WATCH THE PIXIES DVD HE'S LIKE OH I BUM THE PIXIES. but they all laugh at me and i'm like.. wtf. i just can't understand.
people are fucking stupid.

Just feel comfortable with the fact your musical taste is far superior and these guys wouldn't know DECENT ORIGINAL MUSIC if it came up and slapped their smug, gimpy studenty faces.

Yeah, think of it this way, you get to enjoy the Pixies all to yourself and it's them who are missing out on great music. But it is annoying wheen people refuse to even acknowledge what the Pixies did for music. I know exactly how you feel.

That must suck to high heaven lol. Well I've just moved into the University of Birmingham, and happily inflict my music on anyone. The joys of a subwoofer attached to the PC!
So if James Blunt is pumping out of the flat above, I'll fight back with 'Teenager of the Year' or suchlike. Music war!
Excuse my horrid, blatant plug, but please check out my radio show on www.burnfm.com Monday night, 8pm til 9pm. Doog knows it as 'Radio Crud' haha. We're not all Feeder fans though! |

Was the Reading show the first time these people had heard the Pixies? Because as great as they are live, I don't think they're a band where it really works to hear them that way first.

HAHAHA I didn't mean it like "Radio Crud FM"! I meant "here is the crud from the radio where they said nice things bout" for the link on my site. Yeah, Ziggy' played TWO! of my Doog songs on his cool-as-fook uni fm show last week, I was so proud.
LISTEN! IT IS GOOD!

I remember when my dad told me to grab a cd for a long car journey, but with “none of that Nirvana shit.” I took TOTY with the intention of showing him what music was all about. When I put it on, I skipped to Abstract Plain, knowing no one would appreciate the beauty of the first two tracks, they would probably make their noses bleed. The first comment I recieve is from my 18 year old, teeny bopping sister who says..."can he sing?"
This came from the girl who thinks she will one day be a laywer, but also thinks dance music has "good lyrics" and has albums from nobodys such as Blue and Craig David in her collection. Forget sats, gcse's, iq tests ect. All you need to tell a persons intelligence is a quick glance at their cd collection. I didn't feel anger at her comment, I felt smug in the knowlege of my superiority, as should you.
Next came Calistan and Vanishing Spies, which can seem admittingly slightly dull upon the first listen, but it was after Speedy Marie and Headache that my dad said in an annoyed tone "turn this off now, I started listening to it but it's just a noise in the background now. Put the radio on."
Not only did he not like it, he actually couldn't stand to hear it, and I actually thought he had somewhat good taste. Even in the days when I would whip out a bit of Nirvana, he never asked me to turn it off. I was a little heartbroken, but again, I knew, I was right, of course I was, these people just don't know what's good for them, of course I'm right..
My sister has recently dropped her law course after a single lecture. ..I can't help thinking what might have been, if only she had listened to the whole of that album.. |

Heres what you want
Well at least you are dealing with it by expressing your anger here rather than killing them all as some might have you do.
Having had the shared house experience on a number of occasions its always good to know your enemy (who tomorrow may be your ally)
The only real advice I can offer is take plenty of excercise (it helps reduce stress), and if you are going to pick a physical fight with one of them make sure you are sober and they are pissed.

Let me guess... They listen to Nirvana and think Kurt came up with every thing, like the whole soft lud thing, or, bassucally, every riff they had! I mean, come on And, just to let you know, I hate people ike that to, I know a few, I make sure not to talk to them, and the times I do, I just spaz out talking about Pixies! |

I hate them sometimes but just smile then that i get the stuff.... i realise that its not good to hate people.... ok, disagree firmly, but they may be nice people... raging against something is not the way to live (waste of energy).... i have been trying to get so many people into "trout mask replica" because captain beefheart is as smart as einstein, but people think its absolute noise, let them be unfulfilled by westlife and spent their money (can i also mention that getting a pixies tatoo is also a bit silly)... i don't mind... if "pachuco cadaver" is not genius im an orange claw hammer....

Wasn't the main thing Nirvana got from the Pixies the soft verses/loud chorus thing? Aside from that, I don't think they're very similar. Mind you, I love the Pixies and I've never cared for Nirvana, so maybe that has a hand in why I think that way.

It's not like the Pixies really invented that dynamic thing, that's just this cliché journos love to spew out due to lack of imagination. My reckoning is Kurt Cobain said "Oh we ripped off the Pixies" primarily to give more exposure to his unsung heroes, just like he did with Eugene Kelly, the Meat Puppets, the Melvins, and so on. It's not as if nobody in the history of rock music had ever made a verse just drums, bass and vocals. That's the only comparison I can draw with some of Nirvana's songs and some of the Pixies songs.
Anyways, I know this topic has generally been done and dusted, but just thought I'd throw that in, seeing as we were all venting already.

Yeah, that makes sense. I never thought the whole "I ripped off the Pixies" thing was supposed to be serious anyway, but some people apparently think it is.

Actually, when I chatted with him here in montreal in '91, he actually told me that he did rip off different aspects of arrangements from the Pixies...something a lot of bands do to other bands so I was told. Although I think we talked Mudhoney mostly. I guess he felt guilty about it and had to namecheck them repeatedly.
...as for it being 'seriously' a rip off, that was the impression he left me with.
