I just had Somalian food for the first time this week.

It was a great dish of homemade noodles, cheese, saffron, peas, carrots, cauliflower, and spicies I can't really describe but were very good. You also can mix in minced jalepeno and slices of bannana to make it traditional. It was the best meal I have had in a long time.

I ended up taking my family there and although they were a little intimidated because they did not know what to expect, they all ended up really liking it.

Have you ever tried Somailan food? Have you tried any Ethnic foods for the first time recently??

I'm a big fan of trying new food, and I'm really ashamed of myself (and my friends) that I don't get out to try some of the huge range of food available in London. My current favourite is West Indian, which is generally very simply but massively tasty.

Cheesman, what's the difference between Indian food and West Indian food.

Ccuadros, thanks for the recco, I will have to try Peruvian food :)

Another example is Tibeten food... that's kinda exotic, too I guess. I like it, but I don't think that would be for everyone.

There's a great Polish restaurant near my brother's place in Jersey. Umm, so good. There's really nothing like really hearty food with silly sounding names.

Finally a topic for me. I'll try anything once. Lets see...
I love Indian. Find a good buffet to try a little sample of everything. Probably my favorite.
Chinese food if it's authentic.
I go to this great peruvian place in LA. Highly recommend.
Vietnamese soups (Pho')
I've had Ethiopian once in New York It was great.
Moroccan. Interesting. No utensils. Tasty.
Thai food of course
Middle eastern falafel and such.
Greek.
Cambodian
SUSH!
Oh yeah, authentic Mexican.

Okay, I have to go dig into my fungus, seaweed, egg drop, noodle soup I just made.

I am not a number. I am a free man!

West Indies = Caribbean, I'm referring specifically to Jamaican food.

Not sure if its easy to get outside of China but Xinjiang Region food is well nice, lots of lamb, cumin etc etc... great Muslim food.

Whilst I was in Bangkok last week I decided to go and buy a load of Indian spices so that I can make real indian food... cost a little but well worth it.

This is a high class bureau de change, not some Punch & Judy show on the seafront at Margate!

I would imagine that, in order to be ethnic, a type of food would have to be unique to a certain culture. I think once you change it too much, it can no longer be considered "ethnic food." For instance, I believe the pizza originated in Italy, but the kinds of pizzas we eat in the US and the UK are too different from the original to qualify as ethnic.

"ethnic" is kind of a meaningless term because things are only "ethnic" by definition of being different than your particular culture..

it's like "foreign films" here. they're foreign to us. but French films aren't foreign to to Frenchies

So, by Floop's definition, ethnic food is basically the same as foreign food?

I don't know. I think something can be ethnic if it comes from your own culture. It just has to be something indigenous, rather than something adapted from another culture. Am I wrong here?

i was trying to make the point that the term "ethnic food" depends on where you're from. do you really think people in Somolia consider their food to be "ethnic food"?

but if the definition of ethnic food is basically food from a particular cultural group, then what isn't ethnic food?

My thought was that it would be food from one culture that was adapted and modified by another. Also food that can't really be traced to any one culture. I could be wrong, mind you. I don't claim to be an expert.

Not exactly, floopster. You see, being "ethnic" requires that it comes from a lower, less aryan civilization (German food is not ethnic). Ethnic food is food from countries where you expect people to eat shit.

Well I figured the first doom is on the last word of each line, e.g. Tre, doom-de-doom, doom-de-doom

ahh. but still, the second doom-de-doom should be doom-doom-de-doom though?
well, actually, the second line starts before you get a full doom-doom-de-doom.

so...

there goes that tre (doom-de-doom, doom doom)
head to toe in black... etc.

hmmm.
