My dear bereft Catholics fans,
Let us count the myriad ways we love this super-duper song!
But a few items on my long list:
• It's the sixth track and that's a good number
• It's on a killer album
• Mister Scott Boutier does some amazing drumming.
• Let's be honest, the last minute and half of that song is one big orgasm.
• Gotta love the growly loud Frank.
• The song's got the whole Catholics-as-guitar-gods vibe going on:
I miss FB+theCs so much, it hurts to look at that picture
• The reverb or whatever it is during the last couple of seconds is a nice touch; the song maintains its goodness from start to finish.
• The lyrics, so simple, so relatable, so true, so wise.
Close your eyes Or you’ll have a lot of tears to cry So hey now if you’re wise You won’t open up your eyes Close your ears ’cause you don’t really want to hear The things that give you tears So don’t open up your ears And if you sleep Well, you better not go too deep ’cause bad things they will seep Right down into your sleep And if you wake Well, you’re gonna have a nervous break So sleep now for goodness’ sake Sleep for goodness’ sake I need peace I get so down I’ve got these Turned up so loud Turned up so loud
Long live the Catholics!

Yeah! Now we're talking. I Need Peace is indeed a fantastic song on a fabulous album. The Catholics version from their 2003 tour was absolutely stunning. ** sob **

Obviously the best bit is the fabulous solo at 2:42. Not sure about the rest, feel it goes on a bit too long? |

Your right about the drumming K, most notably his snare rolls between the "turned up so loud"s and the begining of the chorus. Tickles me fancy every time. And how he backs off the mic when he repeats the chorus for the last time. That whole album is about as tight and ferocious as a rock band can get in my opinion. |

I closed my eyes....
and then my imagination started to wander...
All of a sudden I now picture Metallica covering this song. Complete with all of the headbanging, hair swinging around in circles, strumming guitars down near their ankles, Lars shirtless, looks of constipation on their faces.
It rocked!

Blimey, that image is not so much "I Need Peace" as "I Need Help"....

I think it was vilainde who said it first, but the bridge/outro/whatever in that song (that very blues-y part) is one of the best things the Catholics ever did. It's an okay song, but that one part... wow. |

I saw the Catholics do it a couple of times in 2003, at the Astoria and the Sheperds Bush Empire. Excellent, excellent song live.
Ooh, he's got an arm off! |

Lyle's guitar playing literally scratches my brain it's soooo good on this album. His and Frank's guitar tones are perfect on this cd. I have always loved distortion and they got it down just as guitars should be.
All of the true things I am about to tell you are shameless lies |

A pair of Lyle's pedals. MXR Distortion 2 and a Cry Baby Wah Wah I'm sure you have no choice but to fold.
They'll be no peace here with Lyle around. |

Well, the Catholics were kind of a loose, ever-changing group anyway. When people say they want to see "the Catholics" again, I imagine they mean the members of the most recent line-up, and not simply Frank going back to recording and touring with a band called the Catholics. I think it's quite possible that he'll work with some, if not all, of the former Catholics on an individual basis, but maybe not so much that they'll all play together again.

Meh, I've just never been a big Catholics fan. I mean, I like the work Frank did with them, but I never really saw them as a cohesive unit so much as just "Frank's back-up band." No offense to any die-hard Catholics fans on here.

I'm sorry, what? The Catholics were not a cohesive unit? I got cohesive right here, VoVat, right here, babe. Cohesive:
I'm just sorry that Scott Boutier's cropped out of that photo.

Frank looks eerily similar to how he does at the moment, what with the regrown hair and all. |

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the earlier and far superior version on the John Peel session, Close Your Eyes. That kicks ass.
