Well. This song is not popular amongst the forum. One more reason for me to be proud of saying: "I love this song"!
It's soulfull and honest, one of the best of the album along with Another Velvet Nightmare.
I love to get stoned and listen to those songs... I realised I now now all the words even if I never "learnt" them... That's a sign (you know the rest).
Kisses!

I agree with you hW, oh yes I do. It's so peaceful. The song and chords just float for two minutes and are a pleasure to play.
Stripped to the bone, Frank's delivered a most beautiful sentiment, straight from his heart. I bet he didn't even have to think when he wrote this one.
My fave: ...I stopped long enough to breathe |

"Violet" makes a great lullaby. Change the words and direct it to your own baby. It puts them right asleep (maybe along with most of the forum users). I like this song.

I don't much care for it, but don't ya'll think it's kind of like John Lennon's "Julia" (about his dead mum) on the Beatles White Album ? Kinda Sappy and gross. Or maybe HAL 9000 singing "Daisy" in 2001, also creepy and gross. I like the lyrics of Violet because he kind of takes all the different definitions of violet (flower, color, symbol, etc.) and turns it into a love song. The song is poor, though. |

Yeah, if my girlfriends name was Violet I might not skip it every time I give Honeycomb a whirl. |

I don't think it's as bad as "Strange Goodbye" (which I dislike solely for the "evening turns into years/laughing through all of these tears" rhyme -- I know Frank's into the "embracing cliches" thing and I'm all for it and have been all for it for years, but YEESH! I'm almost surprised Frank didn't fit a "baby/don't mean maybe" rhyme in there), which seems to get criticized less, as a song (rather than for the Jean Black vocals), here.
I can live with "Violet". I don't like or dislike it. |

Violet, Violet, The pits of the album for me It might be a waltz but is really pure schmaltz To skip for eternity.

If I were Frank, I would be calling up Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, and the whole Osmond family for the next album. |

Violet is Frank's worst song since You're such a wire. (It had to be said) But Strange Goodbye is brilliant! (It also had to be said) |

I was listening to Violet this morning as if trying with all my might to like it, but alas....I had to skip forward to the next song.
I don't know....personally if I was Frank Black's wife and he wrote that song for me......I don't think the tears in my eyes would be that of joy.
sorry..... |

I've seen lots of smack talk on this forum about Such a Wire. It's not a masterpiece but what about it is so bad I wonder? I like Rich's vibrato guitar sound and it seems to be about the capriciousness of a signifigant other, something a lot of people should be able to identify with. |

I'm sure Frank knows it's not the "coolest" song he's ever written but I respect the sincerity & honesty of it. It's a simple, happy waltz & it makes me smile so I give it a thumbs up. |

I love Wire. My best friend and I quote it to one another. It's our thing. But it's cool if others don't like it, ditto Violet, which, for the record, I adore. I've already posted how the first time I heard "Violet" I was driving my car and I considered pulling over because it was such an emotional thing to discover what Frank had been up to.

I find it funny that Jeans song Speedy Marie is the greatest song on the greatest album ever and the best song The Man has ever written, whilst Violet is clearly the single worst thing to ever come out of his existence. |

Doesn't she have Jane, the Queen of Love going for her as well? That song rocks, but not in a Nashville studio musician kind of way. |

I consider Honeycomb a great, 'adult' album, but I can't help thinking Frank wrote 'Violet' in a hurry between two recording sessions, just to have something to dedicate to his new girlfriend. I'm certainly wrong, but that's really what comes to my mind every time I listen to it.

Violet would have been better received if it didn't make Honeycomb, but floated around the internet...as if a mystery, a ripped-out page from Mr Black's diary.
Many of us are suckers when it comes to b-sides, but also forget the brilliance of the a-sides.

Yeah, me too.
It really takes an adult to write that line. For example, a 5 year old wouldn't be capable of such surreal poetry.

Yeah, I thought about posting it in the Art section of the forum, along with a painting on which I urinated (ŕ la Warhol) after drinking Orangina Sanguine.
But I wanted Frank to see it, and I doubt he visits that section to see our lousy demo tapes ("i can't understand what his problem is, i find it hard enough dealing with my own biz" - Ring ring ring).
