In one of those early 80's demos, I think it's the W.E.R.S. studios demos, is Frank using a Dm chord (Frank seems to be playing all the chords leaving the high e string open) somewhere in the verse? I can't hear it in Surfer Rosa's version, but I can't hear anything besides Joey's guitar... So do I start playing it G Bb Dm G Bb G? |

I play the G as a barre, with the B and high E open. And I play the rest of the chords up and down the fretboard barre-style too, with the Dm at the 5th fret of the A string. I don't know if it's right, I have Debaser transcribed with barre chords, and it just feels right to me. |

the Dm could be a D
G...A#...D...G...A#...G verse chords are barres (G=3rd, A#=6th, D=10th) and let the open high E and B strings ring out, especially on the last G of the verse.
please don't quote me on any of this, but..
i think i've heard a version where Black Francis d-tunes his high E to B

Yeah, and he mentions the detuning in some old article. Got the idea from Keef Richards apparently.
I too leave the B and top E open, and drop that top E to a B. |

How about the chorus, Kirk-style. Play much slower on your acoustic guitar.

During the verse it's only Dminor that's played as a 'B' shape. During the chorus it's the Dm, Bb and C.
The open B and High E strings are so distinctive in the song. Sometimes I've heard it played as you hav it tabbed above, other times I've seen open B and E strings on the last G of the chorus that leads us right back into the verse. Nice tabs and another quality song. One of the best verse chorus verses in the world. |
