A thread inspired by the New Pornographers. I've always been a fan of really well-crafted pop songs (you know the kind I mean - really catchy and with at least one irresistable hook) so here's the deal - everyone who's interested post a list of ten great pop songs - but theres a catch. No song shall appear on more than one list (muhahaha). That's right, your lists have to be ten songs that haven't been mentioned already. They don't have to be in any particular order or anything, just ten great pop songs.

| Ah, but it's not a "top ten." It's just a list of ten that haven't been mentioned yet. In the end, what we're left with is just a long list of great pop songs - some well known, others not. |

In no particular order, these are songs that define perfect (and addictive) pop to me (mostly old stuff and mostly under-the-radar stuff that others might not know):
"Beatle Denis" by Robyn Hitchcock (1988)
"Brother Sun Sister Moon" by Paul Revere and the Raiders (1969, I think)
"Mickey Mouse" by Sparks (1982)
"Everywhere That I'm Not" by Translator (1984, I wanna say)
"Will You Be Staying After Sunday?" by the Peppermint Rainbow (1969)
"Look Through Any Window" by the Hollies (1965)
"Popsicles and Icicles" by The Murmaids (1963)
"All of Your Toys" by the Monkees (recorded in 1967, I think, but not released until the mid-80s)
"Quick Joey Small" by The Kazenetz-Katz Singing Orchestral Circus (1968)
"Next Plane to London" by the Rose Garden (1967)

ok... now maybe i was sick during this lesson at school or just writing pixies on all my folders and not paying attention, but isn't "pop" derived from the word popular meaning that pop songs have to be pretty mainstream?? just a question.

(I'm really pleased to see the Steve Harley action! I have a secret love of the man after my dad took me to see him play at Huntingdon Hall which is an old converted methodist chapel, he plays there nearly every year and because he loves the venue he gives most of the profits back to the hall to help with it's upkeep. I've seen him twice now, and he's been brilliant both times, my mum went to see him last year and got all her old vinyl signed and he was really nice to her and listened to her go on about us three kids and he talked about his kids and was totally thrilled aparantly that someone of my age was listening to him still. Steve Harley is a dude. The second time I saw him there was all these signs about the church hall that said No Flash Photography and this guy at the front was snapping most the way through, Steve Harley said "Obviously someone didn't read all the signs then" and the man looked very sheepish, but he went on to add "What most venues don't realise however is when you get to my age you're just glad if someone still wants to take your picture" So he put down the guitar and started making poses for the guy with the camera, hehe. Dude.)

Yeah, technically speaking. But in reality not everything gets to be "mainstream" and the fact is that the stuff that does get to be mainstream isn't necessarily always better than the stuff that doesn't. Just becuase ABBA sold millions of records and the New Pornographers don't doesn't mean the NP's aren't capable of writing a song that's every bit as catchy and appealing in a "pop" sense as ABBA. Finding those unknown but awesome songs has always been one of the things I love most about listening to music... |

no, actually i was not implying at all that the more popular stuff is better. i think most of us agree that the majority of stuff that's out there is better when its NOT mainstream. I mean look at Britanny, Ashlee Simpson.. et al. I just thought pop music had to be "popular"... the non popular stuff, I consider it to be indie, alternative, or what ever :)

| Yes but unfortunately asking for lists of "indie" or "alternative" songs wouldn't really have narrowed the field down to the specific type of song I was after (and would have suggested that more mainstream acts shouldn't be included - which wasn't my intention either). Traditionally, bands like Squeeze, The Romantics, The Raspberries, the Db's, the Plimsouls, and now perhaps the New Pornographers have sort of been lumped into a category called "power pop." It definitely isn't limited to mainstream acts (in fact more often than not the bands are basically unknown) - it's just an attempt to define a certain type of song... |

yeah, i hear you. and what is popular is relative too. for example, to some people, tom waits would be considered popular because he is so well known and respected in certain circles. so really, "pop" is in the eye of the beholder and I do see what you are saying

I do! I used to listen to him a lot. He wrote/writes some very catchy music if you can get past the unusual voice.
