Hello. Just some thoughts about Pixies' amazing performance in Portugal last week - sadly, the Cable TV Station that was in charge of broadcasting the live gigs could not reach an agreement with Pixies' manager. Neither could they reach an agreement with Queens of the Stone Age's manager, much to my dismay, as I had left my VCR pre-programmed at home to record it, oh well
The fantastic 4 went on stage 5 minutes before scheduled (that's a first!) and before saying «hello» they launched into «Wave of Mutilation [UK Surf version]». About half of the 20,000 strong crowd knew the words, so I thought "alright, a savvy crowd, not a bunch of Lenny Kravitz fans like in the SBSR Festival last year". Frank is sporting a new goatee, Dave is now completely bald. Second song in, the first curveball of the night - «In Heaven», sung by Kim. Fantastic, too. Third song in was «Where Is My Mind?» - which prompted the biggest sing-along of the evening (of course). I cannot remember from now on the correct order of the songs they played, so here they go in the order they appear on the albums:
COP: -Caribou (rough start, had to be re-started twice because Frank had too much distortion on his guitar) -Vamos (as always, Joe shone on this one) -Isla de Encanta (a fave among the Spanish fans that crossed the border to watch the festival) -The Holiday Song -Nimrod's Son [you are the son of a mother fucker... right on!]
SR: -Bone Machine -Broken Face -Gigantic -Where is my Mind? -Cactus
Doolittle: Fantastic album, they played almost all of it! -Debaser -Tame [ferocious!!] -Wave (as mentioned above) -I Bleed -Here Comes Your Man (second biggest sing-a-long of the evening - third was QOTSA's «No One Knows») -Monkey Gone to Heaven -Number 13 Baby -Hey -Gouge Away
Bossanova Underrated album, they failed to play «Velouria»!! :sulk: -Allison -Is She Weird
Trompe le Monde Gladly Charles chose to play 4 tunes off this album, since Pixies only played «U-Mass» last year. I was happy. -Planet of Sound [thankfully sounding much better than the album version] -The Sad Punk [I knew it had to be a great concert after hearing the opening chords to this one] -U-Mass -Subbacultcha
Kim tried to engage in some friendly banter with the audience, though her Portuguese accent was a bit rough. Frank tried to correct her, although, sneaky bastard as he is, he turned away from the microphone, lest he be caught communicating with his fans, hehehe. Just kidding. For the encore, the band, once again, never got offstage. They just stood around, hugging each other and basking in the audience's cheers. "Gigantic" sent everyone home happy, with a big shit-eating grin on the face.
Although the gig was not broadcasted live, it's been known that come Xmas time, some of these gigs will be broadcasted on Cable TV, so one might arrange a good VHS-PAL copy of the gig. Hold your breath. :D |

Absolutely agree with you. First half of the show I was between 3rd and 5th row (depending the pushing crowd) and I feel in Frank, Kim and Joey faces they were having a good time. (Not like in Madrid last year). My legs forced me to move for the second half of the show (I couldnt jump anymore) but when I got near the right part of the crowd I found that I can watch almost the whole stage with one arm in one of the beers shops, so GreatagaiN. Definitively the best show (and I have enjoyed a lot of perfomances at Paredes).
You got your good things, and I got mine.
