Yeah, I'm starting to realize that. In a couple of hours of sitting here bored at work I've come across several mentions of the place - which is odd. Frankly, it's a bit unsettling...

Saw the Pixies reunion there as well as Regina and Saskatoon. Great show even if the setup was a little strange. There are maybe eight or nine Peggers on the board tho.

I'm from Winnipeg...

Alot of the bad stuff towards Winnipeg is unfair and some is warrented. The Pixies concert here was
a) in a 'bad' neighbourhood
b) in early spring so everything was dirty from winter

no bad neighborhoods in canada. and you never have to lock your door and your neighbors will drop by all the time with free beer!

winnipeg is great! some outsiders may whine the odd time about the cold winters but this is canada! that's why we play hockey. and the summers are usually great- nice and hot and lots of lakes and cottages to visit.

Yeah, I like Wpg fine. Last summer was absolutely brutal though. After six months of cold cold winter, we really need our usually very nice summer and summer last year was just not on. This year has been somewhat more normal - although man was it a wet spring.

As far as bad neighborhoods go, I remember reading a book by a fellow who had travelled around north america visiting the "bad parts" of every city he landed in. He rated Winnipeg as having some of the scariest, roughest spots in NA. Not exactly something you want in your travel brochures.

It's funny, I find everyone who bitches about Winnipeg, then visits the town, pulls a 180 a can't stop telling me about how much fun they had there. I lived there for a number of years and I really don't see the downtown core as being a "bad" neighbourhood. A little bit grittier than Tuxedo or Fort Garry, but still nothing compared to other neighbourhoods on this continent.

Pixies second reunion show there was great. Winnipeg was damned lucky they were to one of the stops on the tour.

I'm not from Winnipeg, but I'm there now. I've been here much of the summer working. So all you local folks, tell me what the hell to do with my evenings. I'm no good at finding my own entertainment.

you can come over to the fu's and play pong! or foozin and boozin or bocci ball if you prefer. or better yet, would you like to stop by and babysit while the mrs and i go out on the town ;)

i'm probably not the best person to ask what to do with your evenings since the little one arrived. but there's usually a fair amount to do in the summer. we checked out the zoo last sunday. it was a blast! can you tell i've become a family man. but i still get a chance to go for beers. but it's mainly on the golf course or after we play ultimate frisbee. it's pretty big out here in winnipeg. the playoffs are this weekend and there will be a big beer fest on saturday night.

maybe some day we could do the home and home (kind of like the exchange trips when you were in junior high!). here's my dream trip to nashville.

1. check out a FB show with oldman
2. beers (or wine) with the man and oldman and others
3. golf
4. tennessee titans game (huge nfl fan!- got to get ready for my pool next week)
5. nashville predators game
6. pong
7. visit the zoo!

I'm afraid I'm hopelessly out of the "cool Winnipeg nightspots" loop myself. Like Fu, I have a wife and kid with #2 on the way. We're lucky if we can get out to a movie or dinner even. When I was doing the scene it was all about the Bluenote and then the Pyramid.

Heres a few stops you can try though:

- The Whistle-Pig in Transcona for a messy hamburger.
- The BDI (Bridge Drive-Inn) for some yummy ice cream
- The Kings Head pub on King St. for to quaf some ale

erm...and I'm spent!

not sure if that is sarcasm or a genuine whoa!!! some hockey players are still a bit insecure admitting that they enjoy the ultimate frisbee! i started playing 3 years ago and just love it! great workout and training for the upcoming hockey season. we play on wednesday nights and are called "any given wednesdays".

z- congrats on #2 on the way! mrs. fu and i used to live close to the pyramid and would love to check out bands there. kings head is great and will still frequent there the odd time for a pint. now, it's more gatherings with friends so people can bring there kids and not have to worry about getting a sitter.

Thanks for the tips, all. I wasn't really looking for which clubs to go hit up or anything, just something more interesting than my hotel room. I've gone to the BDI; it surprises me seeing how many of that type of places there are around the city. There seems to be no end to interesting little restaurants, and I love all the old buildings. Being from Edmonton, I'm accustomed to structures like those getting razed in favour of ugly condos, so having a chance to sniff around all the old-style architecture that I enjoy without understanding has been a real treat.

I heard the Pyramid was a good place for live music. I also heard the Windsor is a good one, is this so?

If any of you Winnipegers like the sound of an awkward encounter with someone you've never met drop me a note; anyone who likes Frank Black has to be more interesting than my co-workers.

Nothing is ever something.

Hey everyone, I appreciate all the feedback and ideas. Unfortunately, I got a call from the boss this morning telling me I have to move on. I'm expected in Lloydminster tomorrow morning, and I'm guessing there isn't exactly a huge Frank Black following there, so that's too bad. As stated, my job kind of follows the weather, so there's nothing I can do. Once again, thanks for all the thoughts and it's too bad I couldn't work it out quickly enough. On the off-chance I get sent back to Winnipeg this fall, I'll revive this thread and get in touch with you guys.
