Ok this is our (the Surgens) version of “the Happening” that we have recorded for a Nu Blues compilation CD. hope you like it!. you can download it from our website at http://www.thesurgens.co.uk/mp3s.htm
For all you musicians out there: it was recorded at gizzard studios London UK live straight to anologue tape. Lead guitar 1954 Fender Esquire & 1957 Fender Tweed pro amp - 1941 Noble lap steel & 1957 Gibson GA- 20 - 1960 bullet harmonica mike & 1963 Epiphone amp - 1964 Framus bass Guitar & 1964 Ampeg bass amp and a saw (year unknown). no effects pedals were used. so it should sound older than frank blacks original or is this the original Javascript:insertsmilie('')
We are also using this recording session to try and get a record deal so if anyone can recommend anybody that would be great.
Thanks again to Frank and the Pixies for their influence on all the band members over the last 15 years.

I play the Lap Steel on the majority of the songs including 'The happening' and if im not playing that then im playing The Dobro (Twisted brain) or the Banjo (Drunken Angel) ....a master of none |

... which makes most covers useless and uninteresting. Right?

i just love your chorus rendition at the start of the song, and the pause then "YEAH!" bit is my fave. Yeah! definately worth the wait. will go listen to your originals now. |

Actually I find it rather boring if someone does an EXACT copy of the original tune. I already heard the original artist do it...why do I need to hear someone do it the same way?
The Surgens did a cover just like anyone who covers a song should...they turned it into their own.
Way to go dudes and very interesting. Made me want to go listen to the other songs on the site and that's a good thing, no?

Thanks Lester. I dig it. I miss the bass and the spooky background vocals of the original. I like that there's still a little screaming still in there. The marching snare drum sounds on the back half of the song made me smile and dance around in my chair.

Greetings, now, regarding Lesters first post, under the piece "for musicians amoungst you.....",he kindly lists all the stringy things and box`s of valve-type noise-makers,but fails to mention the tree-pipes.Oh dear Lester,i do hope this is not a thinly-veiled attempt to re-open the old drummers versus musicians argument ,as that sort of thing makes a wolf`s blood-boil to a vengefull frothy frenzy,.... SO,..."for the musicians...",plus a 60`s vintage Gretch jazz kit, with an equally vintage Ludwig snare, and Zildian cymbals, hit hard with big sticks. |
