What does it mean when you write a topic, 100 people look at it and 5 people actually bother to post?

It could mean that there are alot of people out there who want to post a reply, but who simultaneous say to themselves 'If I pull out of replying then maybe everyone else will too, which will make the poster think that he's a right Dwad!'
But thats unlikely....

Maybe it simply means they're just not interested. Of course we all post a new topicto get a response, otherwise, why would we post it? But it's a sure sign the topic has fallen dead on its face when hundreds look but only a handful respond. It's a gamble. |

Damn - now I feel obligated to reply.
When I read a topic and don't reply it's just that I have nothing to contribute or maybe nothing I would care to make public so it's bound to happen when I post a topic nobody wants to reply to.

most topics pique my interest enough to look into, but not all topics make me feel like i will add anything to them, either due to lack of interest, knowledge, or simply i just don't want to get into it (usually political ones)

Sometimes the post is so profoundly challenging to the reader's prejudices that he or she is shamed into a silence born of dishonesty, equally unable to either admit acceptance or frame rational disagreement. |

God! Wouldn't it totally suck if real lif was like that. You know, you walk into a bar, sit down with a bunch of friends and bring up some topic that you think is pretty interesting and all you get is blank stares. |

No! Say it aint so. Well, what sort of subjects do you bring up? I find people don't reply to those who bring up wildly inappropriate things. |

I suffer from wild inappropriateness.
(not really) but I am greeted with confused looks often at work

Oh, well that's different. In fact, that's something to be proud of. What sucks is when people are either disgusted with you or uninterested in you. I'm not sure which is worse between those two. |

I agree with what you say Brian, although I'd say the political ones are what I like the most....
Does anyone know which post got the most replies (no games, nor the FB originated threads allowed to be included)?

There is, for those who watch this sort of thing, a sort of post to view ratio for new threads and the average is around 10 views to 1 post, if it goes wildly above that as in 30 or 100 views to 1 post, it's either a crap thread or people are waiting for a fight to occur. If it goes below it's usually something people have a lot to add (usually it's the threads where people can talk about themselves, everyone likes that) or because it's established and people know whats going to be in there so only view when they want to post (like what are you drinking right now)
When threads get old though, the proportions are way out because of lurkers and nostalgia queens.
I'm not proud of noticing this.

You could just add your agreement by posting just a 'heh' here or there.
No! Wait! Didn't Dave ban that a while back?

I too noticed this :D
Sometimes I read a thread and if an answer is going to take a bit of thinking then I come back to it later. Sometimes I follow a thread, just reading it to see if anything comes up that I can add to, or just because I'm interested.

I probably post to much. I mean, often I'll post a flippant little joke, and get some pathetic satisfaction out of my crappy 'contribution'. But what the heck, it's a forum, no point being too uptight about having to post something deeply profound. |

What about drag queens?

I usually try to reply right away, for fear of forgetting about the thread when I actually do have something to say. I guess I don't always have the most thought-out replies that way, but it's sometimes good just to keep a topic active, so that it'll have a better chance of showing up again when I DO have something relevant to say.
