I don't know. I was pretty much talking out my ass. I guess I mean that the whole rock and roll movement is too huge and broad, which is not at all a bad thing, to really have any meaning to it. I still don't know what the hell I'm talking about. I mean, I know, but I don't know. I don't know...

I *think* nearly all music has meaning, it may just not mean much to you.

I do sort of see what you're saying though. There doesn't seem to be any original movement. And whenever one begins to crop up it immediately get's commercialised by record labels. Big corporate labels are acting so quickly to anything they see as a possible musical movement that they kill it dead before it can develop creatively.

i have a theory that people have the strongest response to music when they're going through big changes in their life. the biggest being, 'becoming an adult' and all that stuff. stuff you listen to during your 'coming of age' period of life (high school / college) is usually the stuff that sticks with you the most |

Very true. But don't limit it to the 'coming of age' period (high school/college). There's lots after that.

true.. i think that first period is the most profound for most people. when you're becoming your own person.
most people i know have their absolute favorite band, that they think is the fucking best and that all other bands suck compared to. and usually that was the band they got into when they were like 18 or so.
which in my case is true too. it just so happens that they are the best |

Hmm, that would sum up me too. I've never thought about it that way. But, I'd like to think I have enough discretion to know good music no matter at what point I got into the band. For instance, alot of bands I loved around the time I was in college are still together but I think they suck now.

This is a pointless post, though some of the letters are great. If you are bored of with the state of the forum, write some decent forum.

Now listen to The New Pornographers, Mclusky and The Delgados (although two of those have recently split up). All three are vastly underrated though.

when homers recommends a band. |

Did rock 'n' roll, in and of itself, EVER have a meaning? I mean, it's just a style, right? All the stuff about youthful rebellion was nothing more than a clever marketing strategy, as far as I can tell.
On the other hand, plenty of individual rock songs have meaning, and there are many good bands out there. I think Floop's theory that people usually find their favorites when they're entering adulthood is true, though. Most of the bands I like a lot now are ones I got into either when I was in college, or pretty soon afterwards.
The way in which I usually find new music, outside of recommendations from other people, is by finding connections between bands. You know, stuff like common members, one band having an influence on another, and such.

Depends on your own personal opinion. It's down to each individual. It does to me.

Apologies to the old-timers, but really, how can you talk about meaningful rock 'n' roll without mentioning this guy?
