In keeping with Tre's frankly hilarious sunny day music choices, I've been invited to a 90's-themed party and I'm not sure what I should go dressed as.
I've been suggested as Jarvis Cocker (brilliantly wrong), Hulk Hogan or Vanilla Ice, but I'm wondering whether I should just find baggy clothes or dungarees.

Any suggestions?

you can't go wrong with any of the characters from ally mcbeal

kidding

i'd suggest you go as either Mr. Fill in the Color of your choice from Resavoir Dogs, or a Teletubbie, if you can find a costume

Bitch, I'd suggest you shove your head up your backside and go as a muso snob :)

Go as manda from bis, you need plastic jewellery (I can send you some) an oversize primary colour hair clip, and a dress from a charity shop that grannies would buy, blue or green with hideous flowers preferably, you'll look a TREAT!

either that or standard early ninties rock kid resplendant with a home made slogan T shirt, red lumberjack shirt, holey jeans and DM's with mismatched laces with beads in them.

OR!!! put your clothes on backwards and go as half of kriss kross!

Or! cover youself in red pen and go as the kid with all the birthmarks in the crash test dummies classic mmm mmm mmm mmm, oh hang on was that a girl?

I loved the ninties.

I was thinking I could shave funny and go as Geoff from Byker Grove, but how would you do the rest of the look?

Great stuff, Simon.

I am proud to say I did not commit any of those clothing crimes, except for wearing Adidas windpants, which I still wear.

That link gave me this idea for you: go as Laura from Twin Peaks.

Isn't it you that keeps on about mary-janes?
Ahem.

I'm sure I have one or two of those in my cupboard still... maybe some combats to go with white trainers, and I can definitely do the layered-shirt thing.

The mary janes are timeless, as well as cute.

Whatever you decide, Simon, you must post pix of your 90s self!

Wait! I just noticed in that list the thigh-high tights, platforms and polar fleece, which are wardrobe staples for me, though not simultaneously.

Fanny packs are the devil's work. They scream "tourist."

Maybe you can go as a tourist from the 90s, Simon.

  • Stapled hems
This quick fix became a common style in the early 90's. High school students would staple the hems of their dickies so as not to trip on thier designer bedroom slippers

  • First of all, no recollection of stapling clothes
Secondly, can someone explain to me what it means to staple a dickie? the pictures I'm getting look painful but possibly essential if long enough to trip over.

Kathryn, say fanny pack again, go on, hehehehehe

THE OFFICE is so damned funny! great great show.

and i happen to like my baggy jeans, thank you. they're not the two feet wide leg jeans, just baggier than regular fit. i like 'em and will continue to wear 'em. the 90s can piss off. and anyone trying to staple my dickie will get his eye dotted.

    fanny.

when I think of that stuff, which isn't very often, I think of "no style." as in lack of style.

Is our nostalgia cycle getting compressed, or am I just getting old? I thought our culture was mining too-recent history with the 70s revival in the late 90s. Pretty soon we're going to be having what-you-did-yesterday parties. I may throw one, just to be a trendsetter - you know...forward-looking and all that.

Well, I looked everywhere for a Hulk Hogan outfit with no joy, so I went with the ugly plaid shirt (I say ugly, I actually quite like it now - it fits better than I expected...) over an ugly T-shirt. You can't see it here, but the most authentic touches were the jeans (they kind of looked as though they taper slightly at the ankle, I'm not sure why I still have these), and the big white trainers.
    Looking good, oh yes.
