They have the story at UltimateGuitar.com too
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/upcoming_releases/pixies_to_release_sell_out_dvd.html?200508040318
Pixies To Release Sell Out DVD Date: 2005-08-04 Artist: Pixies Category: Upcoming Releases Spin magazine called it "2004's Comeback of the Year," eBay auctioned single tickets for hundreds of dollars, and the media fell all over themselves with praise for what devotees bet their bottom dollar would never happen the Pixies' reunion tour. If you didn't make it to one of the Pixies' reunion dates, well then, you're going to be able to take the Pixies home with you. This September 20th, Rhino Home Video will release "Pixies Sell Out," an all- performance DVD culled from seven different Pixies reunion concerts held in 2004. The main part of the program is from the band's concert in Belfort, France (July 3) and features 27 classic Pixies songs including "Here Comes Your Man," "Monkey Gone To Heaven," "Bone Machine," "Where Is My Mind," and "Gigantic." The DVD's bonus material offers additional performances from concerts in the United States (Coachella/May 1, Lowell/December 1, Austin City Limits Festival/September 18, and New Orleans' Voodoo Festival/October 16), Japan (Fuji Rock Festival/July 30), England (the Move Festival/July 10) and Scotland (T In The Park/July 11). "Pixies Sell Out" will retail for $19.99.
Pixies -- Frank Black/vocals, guitar; Joey Santiago/guitar; Kim Deal/bass; and David Lovering/drums -- kicked off their reunion tour on April 13, 2004, at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis, MN, and over the ensuing eight months shattered sales records around the world. The following May 1, Pixies co-headlined the Coachella Valley Festival and created pure magic in the hot desert for 50,000 fans ("The day belonged to the Pixies" said the New York Times). Pixies went on to sell out a record-setting four consecutive nights at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom, 19,000 tickets for their four-night London run were gone in less than two hours, and the band capped off 2004 with an unprecedented eight-night stand at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom.
The Pixies formed in Boston in 1986 when Charles Thompson dropped out of college and convinced his friend and roommate, Joey Santiago, to do the same. The two recruited bassist Kim Deal, who suggested drummer David Lovering join the group, and the lineup was official. Thompson adopted the stage name Black Francis and the group named themselves the Pixies after flipping through a dictionary. The Pixies quickly gained a cult following as well as critical acclaim for their signature blend of screaming punk noise, indie guitar rock, classic pop, and surf-rock riffs mixed with impossible-to-ignore melodic hooks and Francis' bizarre lyrics about religion, UFOs, and metaphysics.
During their six years together, the Pixies released five albums on the 4AD label - Come On Pilgrim (1987); Surfer Rosa (1988); Doolittle (1989); Bossanova (1990), and Trompe Le Monde (1991). Experiencing particular success in the U.K. and Europe, the Pixies played sold-out festivals and received a multitude of fan, peer and critical acclaim, the U.K.'s NME named Doolittle the "Second Best Album Ever." The band's influence was far-reaching; U2's Bono referred to the Pixies as "one of America's greatest bands ever;" David Bowie called their work "just about the most compelling music of the entire '80s," and Kurt Cobain, who identified Surfer Rosa as his favorite album of that entire decade, confessed, when writing "Smells Like Teen Spirit," that, "Basically, I was ripping off the Pixies."

Pixies Sell Out For New Live DVD
Following months of acclaimed concerts across the world, the reformed Pixies have revealed details of a new live DVD entitled ‘Pixies Sell Out’ featuring material culled from their recent gigs.
Pixies’ Frank Black, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and David Lovering reformed and played their first concert since 1992 on April 13 last year in Minneapolis. Over the following eight months, the band played amazing concerts across North America and Europe, including a four night residency at London’s Brixton Academy. Single-handedly proving that all classic band reformations don't have to be bloody dreadful.
To celebrate this, the band are releasing the DVD ‘Pixies Sell Out’ on September 20 on Rhino Home Video, culled from seven different Pixies reunion concerts held in 2004, with the main part of the program taken from the band’s concert in Belfort, France (July 3).
It includes 27 classic Pixies songs including ‘Here Comes Your Man’, ‘Monkey Gone To Heaven’, ‘Bone Machine’, ‘Where Is My Mind’ and ‘Gigantic’ plus bonus material including footage from the Coachella, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock, T In The Park and Move festivals.

I see your point though - it would be a bit surprising, to say the least, if a concert meant for a DVD release was shown on TV beforehand...

It's no different than a movie making it's way to dvd. Movies are shown worldwide then distributed for the home viewing market. Same with television shows...all these are released after being broadcast worldwide.

Pixies Update 08/08/05
(Day in Rock) The release date for the "Pixies Sell Out" DVD has been bumped to OCTOBER 4, 2005. Three of the DVD's bonus material tracks are from Pixies' May 1, 2004 concert at the Coachella Valley Festival. Pixies' Kim Deal and David Lovering talk about playing that gig:
"It was indescribable," Kim says. "We had worked our way west toward Vancouver, playing regular-sized shows. But when we walked out onstage at Coachella, the sun had just begun to curve down, so it was getting cooler but it wasn't dark yet. We could see all these people and they were so happy. It wasn't like, 'Geez, they're clapping loud.' It was more this sense of excitement that the Pixies were there. I was so overwhelmed that I screwed up the beginning of our first song, 'Bone Machine.'"
"I think we played Pomona the night before," Dave continues. "A lot of the Coachella bands were there, so there was this feeling that it was a big event. Getting there, it was wonderful to hang with the bands backstage. It reminded me of one of the first times we'd played in London, at a place called the Mean Fiddler, after 'Surfer Rosa' had come out. The audience just shocked me. It was the same at Coachella: I hadn't ever seen that number of people with that amount of love. It was incredible."
You can never have enough Pixies news so here is some info on another new DVD featuring David Lovering:
THE UNHOLY THREE RELEASE PERFOMANCE DVD, THROW PARTY "Alternative" Magic/Comedy Troupe Featuring Pixies Drummer David Lovering and Former Possum Dixon Frontman Rob Zabrecky to Host Prestidigitation Release Party August 11 at Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood; Press and Public Invited
In the three years since the formation of magic and comedy troupe The Unholy Three Pixies drummer David Lovering, ex-Possum Dixon frontman/bassist Rob Zabrecky and a mysterious third member who's simply known as Fitzgerald have been spellbinding audiences every Friday night (except when Lovering is on the road with the reunited Pixies) at the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood. The shows have built a loyal following and press raves; the LA Weekly, for example, noted that "they all seem to demonstrate an almost defiant originality. And it might just be within an art form like magic, precisely because it has been so neglected, that we suddenly discover something fresh and new."
Recently, director Carlos Grasso filmed a performance by the group at the exclusive members-only club and has fashioned the footage into a highly unusual film, complete with a wry and dry backstage narrative. The Unholy Three Live at the Magic Castle will be released on DVD in September and available for purchase on the members' individual websites. (a href="http://davidlovering.com/" target="_blank">http://davidlovering.com/
On Thursday, August 11, The Unholy Three will venture beyond the walls of their Victorian-mansion sanctuary to throw a release party in celebration of the film's completion. The troupe will perform its one-of-a-kind magical mystery revue at the soiree, which promises to be an evening of excitement, danger and suspense, with live piano accompaniment by Brad Kay. The event, previewed by the L.A. Times' Steve Hochman in his "Pop Eye" column, will take place at the Steve Allen Theater (4773 Hollywood Blvd.). Tickets are $10, and the affair starts at 8 p.m. Miss it at your peril. They'll also make an appearance the morning of the party on Indie 103.
Lovering and Zabrecky both caught the magic bug following the breakups of their respective bands. "I didn't play drums in six or seven years after that," says Lovering. "It was a matter of Œbeen there, done that" I couldn't top the Pixies. Then, one day, someone showed me a magic trick that just blew me away, and since then I have just been crazed about magic. I went into it full-on and became a professional magician."
Once he had his act together, Lovering started touring with bands as a roadie-free opening act; one of these was Frank Black & the Catholics, a pairing that found David doing double duty as his old friend's drummer.
After being introduced by fellow artist Grant-Lee Phillips, himself a practicing musician (Phillips' card tricks had captivated Lovering early on), David and Rob honed their craft at the Magic Castle during the course of sessions of what is known as the Wonder Workshop, where magicians perform for each other. Eventually, they teamed with fellow Magic Castle member Fitzgerald (who's not a musician but happens to have a perfect rock & roll coif) and formed the group. "We're all best friends, and we work off each other," says Lovering. "I couldn't be happier with it." While Lovering is having a blast playing again with Black Francis, Kim Deal and Joey Santiago in the Pixies, his passion for magic and commitment to The Unholy Three is stronger than ever.
Together, these three disparate characters have concocted a provocative, virtually unprecedented cabaret act in which their individual specialties Zabrecky's Lynchian mentalism, Lovering's self-coined "scientific phenomenalism" (armed with an engineering degree, he had a job building lasers before the Pixies lured him away) and whatever it is that postmodern prestidigitator Fitzgerald does are eerily interconnected. There is simply no precedent for The Unholy Three; you have to see it to believe it. And here's your chance because you can't get into the Magic Castle. But be forewarned: Do not under any circumstances touch the meteorite the one with the protruding antenna topped by a Jack in the Box bobblehead.

Pixies Add Bonus Coachella Tracks To DVD
by Paul Cashmere
8 August 2005
The forthcoming DVD release for The Pixies 'Pixies Sell Out' will include additional footage taken at Coachella.
The tracks from Coachella are 'Gigantic', 'Caribou' and 'Into The White'.
"It was indescribable," Kim Deal says. I was so overwhelmed that I screwed up the beginning of our first song, 'Bone Machine'.
Drummer David Lovering concurs. "I think we played Pomona the night before. A lot of the Coachella bands were there, so there was this feeling that it was a big event.
The DVD will be released on October 4.
Meanwhile, David Lovering will also soon release another DVD with his other band 'The Unholy Three'. They will throw a launch party for the DVD on August 11 at the Steve Allen Theater in Los Angeles.
