Fellow FB fans (especially the one's living in New York and Boston),
What cool places should I not miss when (if...) I go to New York and Boston next week? So far, I've got the M.O.M.A museum as a must see in New York. But what other interesting places (parks, museums, monuments, shops, restaurants, streets, anything...) should I not miss~?
This trip was a last minute kind of thing and I'm now running out of time to properly start and plan the trip. Any tips would be most appreciated.
Help? |

Where are you staying in each city? That would help me in making recommendations.

Do you care about baseball? You could visit Fenway and Yankee Stadium? Also I think the certain parts of Boston are fun - like Harvard Square (which is actually over the river in Cambridge) and Newbury Street. You could walk up Newbury Street to Boston Common (our park) and then over to the Freedom Trail which is all the old Boston historical things. Boston is relatively small so you can see a lot in not a ton of time.
Also check out http://boston.metblogs.com/ and http://nyc.metblogs.com/ for some slightly more obscure things.

I lived in NY City for a short time. I can think of a couple places that I loved. If you like books, go to The Strand on 12th and Broadway. It's a huge old building full of used books (and new), and the prices aren't that bad. Also, since you are right there, you can walk around the East Village...very cool area. Then head North for Times Square. There are a lot of restaurants and shops there in the Theatre district. Cruise up a few blocks to Central Park and take a stroll...don't worry where your going...just go! The park is chock full of cool things you will just happen upon. Head on up through the park the West side to 81st. Walk 81st down 2 blocks until you hit Columbus Ave. (Christopher Walken's apartment is on 81st between Central Park West and Columbus Ave...I have pictures of his doorbell...it actually says Walken!). Once you hit Columbus on 81st, make a right. You will hit a pub called McAleer's. Get a hamburger there...it's the best in the world! Anyhow, you can do all this in a day.

In Boston I loved the JFK Library, but it was definitely a bit hard to get to with public transportation a few years ago (taking subways and a few different busses if I remember correctly. I would suggest a walk through the north end and to find a good italian restaurant there for lunch-the one I found was a hole in the wall but was memorable, although not so memorable that I can remember the name anymore!! Quicy Market was incredibly tourist-y, but since I was a tourist I actually did enjoy parts of it. And I did have the most amazing steamed lobster and steamed clams at the downstairs bar to Durgin Park restaurant, but that was 10 years ago, and my attempt to recreate it a few years later was not as successful. I'm sure the locals can give you more current restaurant advice. Ahhhh. Wish I was going back to Boston. I love it there. And NYC too!

pretend you are neighborhood shopping and money is not a question. eat well keep moving avoid THE CROWD and get out on the street early in the morning and later in the PM when the streets are cooler and people are in a better mood. the mid day mob is to much to take in the summer so take a nap after lunch. enjoy New York and when some guy says "HEY", just keep walking. |

Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is pretty good...i think well worth a visit. MOMA in NY is great.
If you go down to Quincy Mkt (see super's note above), you might try the Black Rose a block south...I like eating there (pub food). the freedom trail is an ok tour of historical boston...
also, do a search on boston in the general chat forum...there are a few topics discussing travel to Boston.
(don't call it beantown).

Thank you guys for the replies. Unfortunately, it seems the trip won't happen. The ticket prices for the flights this time of year are ridiculous. At least for me. I also left it kind of late, so it's my fault. I'm going to remember everyone's suggestions, though. It'll happen soon...hopefully. Thanks again. |
