Lyrics

Strange Goodbye

you used to walk in a big black cloud
I took your hand and I led you out*

a nest of demons played upon my chest
You picked me up and you laid them to rest

It's a pain, to be sure, we were aiming so high
It's so strange to be saying goodbye

We saw the world from an automobile

Saw the best view over 10,000 meals

Funny how an evening turns into years

Funny how we're laughing through all of these tears.

It's a pain, to be sure, we sure gave it a try
It's a shame to be saying goodbye

Oh my darling shall we have one more dance
A prayer to the raingod to give one more chance
The water will cleanse us, we spin on the plain
and take us to the ocean to find love again

It's a pain, to be sure, we were aiming so high
It's so strange to be saying goodbye

It's a pain that endures, we sure gave it a try
It's so strange to be saying goodbye

(*I used to walk in a big black cloud)
You took my hand and you led me out - is this right now guys?)

I sang this with my soon-to-be ex-wife. We're very friendly with each other, which is why the vibe of the song is so happy: We were a happy couple, and now we're a happily divorced couple. This is just our way of having a sense of humor about it all. A lot of our friends were freaked out when we split up, so we decided that doing a song together would communicate that we weren't at about hate. It's just our way of saying, "Come on, guys. Let's drink up and be happy and make peace with it all."

Over the years, Frank's mentioned his big ole yellow Cadillac. Maybe that's the "automobile" the song refers to?

is it 10.000 meals or 10,000 mils (as in distance travelled)?

kinda similar to "make us some mon" in Pan American Highway
just wondered if it was another FB abbreviation

good point, fbc. very good point. but i'm still hearing "meals."

also, remember, the above are the words printed on the fancy pants japanese HC, the one with lyrics to all frank tunes, not just to honeycomb.

the first word is DEFINITELY "I" not you. proves they can be wrong!

infact, with the first two lines, Is and Yous are switched. weird. maybe because the lyrics are written from the perspective of frank? i wonder if he wrote it like that originally, like he didn't know it was gonna be a duet.

Oh let it linger

Yet again, Frank on SG: "I suppose it's just kind of my joke on the album. Everybody else, all of our friends, were always so uncomfortable about it, so I thought I would throw this at them."

Moderator people, whats the procedure when the sung lyric is different to the "official" lyric, seeing as whats in the HC booklet doesn't match up to the song?

If it were obvious Steve, I wouldn't be asking would I?

well i thought i made it obvious for you...

there is only one recording of the song that exists in this universe (or only one that we are aware of and know). the lyrics that are in the song must be the lyrics of the song, no?

plus, it's only the japanese one that has lyrics... i'm going to pretend it doesn't exist.

:) beautiful song and it's so cool to hear Frank's story behind it. :) I have to say the first time I heard this song, I was like who is singing the duet. Jean has a beautiful voice.

Frank on "Strange Goodbye" in the current issue of NME:

"Singing a goodbye song with your ex-wife ('Strange Goodbye') is pretty naked... I was excited to be able to go there. You know that song Ringo Starr had a hit with, 'If you Wanna Sing The Blues You Gotta Pay Your Dues'? It feels good to pay some dues and suddenly, 'Ding ding ding ding ding!' These green-lighted doors that you didnt realise were there suddenly appear. It's like, 'OK you can go in here and write one of these kind of songs now. You've earned it, you have the scars to prove it and you can do it in a much more believable way.' It's really strange how that happens but it really does happen."

I know they were married in a Vegas Drive-thru Chapel. That may be the reference.

Frank and Jean traveled a lot. Frank refered a couple of times in interviews to a trip with the QEII back in 1991.
Besides songs like Pan American Highway and everything on Black Letter Days is about traveling, this guy toured a lot.

SG would have been good on Show Me Your Tears.
Maybe it hadn't been written yet I suppose...

again, Comes With A Smile.

How did that come about?
I was writing the song at the Burbank airport and I said "I want to sing this with Jean as a duet." as a kind of Johnny Cash and June Carter thing, almost show-bizzy. And so I called her and she said "yeah, no problem" and so I did write it with that in mind. We weren't in the studio at the same time --I think we both would have got a little too choked up if that had been the case-- but it was our way of sealing things and also to prevent a kind of happy, almost humorous face in the light of it all.

I've always liked Burbank better than LAX. Now this is even better reason to like it.

Does the fast, uneven fade at the end of the song annoy anyone else?

It felt great, It was a public display of affection, if you will, by two people who were together for a very long time. As difficult as the breakup was, sometimes I think it was a lot more traumatizing for friends of ours. Probably because they transfer a lot of their own fear about their own relationships onto the situation and feel threatened by it. So it was a way of saying, 'Hey, everybody, yes, the rumours are true, and we'd like to sing a little song about that. '"

Sorry Tre, didn't see this thread before. Whatever you want re:official vs sung is fine by me. I'd probably go official myself...
