I love Honeycomb, but…
I can’t help but wonder what it would have sounded like with the Catholics….True, these session musicians are legendary and quite talented (and this is not to argue the merits of using session musicians),but I still wonder what it would have sounded like with musicians who have spent so much time with Frank Black (The Catholics), gaining a richer sense what he wants. Essentially, Scott Boutier and Dave McCaffrey have evolved with Frank over the years. It is for this reason that I think that the Catholics should be brought back to support Honeycomb.
….it could be great.

i agree that it would've been much better with the catholics. by principle i'm against everything that is "classic", "legendary" or "cool" or whatever you wanna call it a priori and at all costs intended as knowing and playing with certain people automatically makes you a tout court genious that adds quality and class to everything (like if eric clapton would add class to nirvana).
but as they say in italy:
un uomo si deve levare i sassolini dalla scarpa...
suits me fine as long as horrible doesn't become synonymous of "for few" or for "mature" and detractors are treated as ignorant teenagers. if you get what i mean.
May the farce be with you |

My guess is that if you'd seen FB+Cs, Daisy, you too would be chomping at the bit to have them do a Honeycomb tour.

Ive seen FB 4 times, once with Pixies and three times with the Catholics... they were great. I kind of hope Frank keeps coming back to them from time to time. With Franks schedule of releasing albums a year / a year and a half after the last album, with touring pretty much 365 days a year its hardly surprising that they are not together at the moment. I just hope it doesn't last too long.

I miss FB's solo shows with just he and Dave Phillips. They had a good vibe, and really created a much fuller sound than you would expect from two dudes. The first time I heard "If It Takes All Night" was when they played it at the Knitting Factory. To be completely unoriginal "IT ROCKED". I was floored and FB was pounding his guitar like a jack hammer. They seemed to get along real good too. |

Hey Men, don't forget that musicians have a life sometimes... They gotta move forward! You could understand that it is not very easy to live in the gigantic shadow of Frank Black (I wouldn't mind!) for such a long time. From one incarnation to another the Catholics had their time for 10 years now. WE enjoyed it. It's great to see that changes are occuring. Don't doubt, you'll probably see them again with Frank in a way or another. After the Pixies reunion, ANYTHING can happen in this world. I'm full of Hope and Love!

Pfff, and what about a strike???
Frank Black likes France, but it is not a reason to behave like an average French worker.
Let him be free for Christ's sake, you ask too much!!!
What about a free salad with the next Catholics album????

"Honeycomb" would be a lot different with the Catholics performing. You'd get a "Show Me Your Tears" sounding album I think.

Yo Guitar Man, what the fuck's wrong with the Catholics' back-up vocals. Put on "Changing of the Guards" and then tell me how those backup vocals could be any better!
"Changing of the Guards"
...Sixteen years, SIXTEEN YEARS....over the fields, OVER THE FIELDS, Desperate men, DESPERARTE MEN,...Fortune calls, FORTUNE CALLS, to the marketplace, THE MARKETPLACE, my last deal gone down, MY LAST DEAL GONE DOWN,...The cold-blooded moon, THE COLD-BLOODED MOON, Sending his thoughts, SENDING HIS THOUGHTS, They shaved her head, THEY SHAVED HER HEAD, A messenger arrived, A MESSENGER ARRIVED, I stumbled to my feet, I STUMBLED TO MY FEET, Renegade priests, RENEGADE PRIESTS, The palace of mirrors, THE PALACE OF MIRRORS, The endless road, THE ENDLESS ROAD, She wakes him up, SHE WAKES HIM UP, She's begging to know, BEGGING TO KNOW,Gentlemen, he said, GENTLEMEN, HE SAID,I've shined your shoes, I'VE SHINED YOUR SHOES, But Eden is burning, EDEN IS BURNING, Peace will come, PEACE WILL COME,...
Ahhh, How soon we forget!

Yeah, I've the feeling that if this particular 'dream', I suppose, were to go ahead, people would be crying out for the Catholics to rerecord the album with Frank. Ha! |

Sincerely, I like and respect the Catholics but neither Dave P. nor Rich G. managed to make me forget the terrific solos on TOTY (aaah Fazer Eyes...) and COR.
In other words, I'd like to see / hear Lyle Workman play with FB again. And I humbly think it's more likely to happen soon than a Catholics reunion or even a new Pixies album. After all Lyle has been part of the King's entourage since 1993... Oh, and doesn't he play on 'The Sicilian' by the way?

Yeah, the Catholics aren't bad at the back up harmonies, they just don't do it a whole lot. They're always right on, but the level's just mixed low. It's just something that Frank hasn't utilized a lot since TOTY. I do miss all the great harmony of the TOTY days.

Yeah FITS, I believe you're right about Lyle remaining with The King while the Catholics have been ex-communicated and sent into exile: "After all Lyle has been part of the King's entourage since 1993..." I'm not sure if he plays on it, but Sir Jon and/or The King have given him credit for writing all the charts for Honeycomb and The Sicilian.
JJJJC, my comment on the backup vocals on "I Gotta Move" is that they are pitch-perfect in my opinion, the volumn's up enough, and it compliments the lead vocals nicely.
Calistanian, I agree, about the mixing levels and Frank not utilizing backup vocals since TOTY. Personally, I don't miss TOTY as much as I'm gonna miss the Catholics. I prefer any of the FB&TheC's records over TOTY.

Funny, today I thought it was about time to listen to some other Frank than HC for a change and put TOTY on. It blew me away. Like always. What a powerfull, rocking record! I didn´t pay attention to the backgroundvocals though... |

alrighty then.
not retracting my original statement, but my backing vocal remark was in reference to the Catholics playing Honeycomb. They wouldn't even come close to matching the guys on HC.
Surley you hear the "I don't know if her sister will" and the "oohs" over "Mom is a gypsy..." No one can sing like the cats, not even the beloved back up band we call the Catholics.

I couldn't help but laugh when I heard this. The song itself is great but the singing, well, lets just say it's one of McDaves finest moments.
finally through the roof, my friend!

With a smile, in jest and no malice, I'd say "weak!".
I had to find a top example to support my case against the Catholics backing vocals, you see. Oldman knows how to fight his corner, and he does it with the best of them. I had to pull something out the bag or he'd just tear me apart with his legal jargon and loopholes. I'm hoping the evidence I provided above will leave him in no doubt I am right, he is wrong. |
