my new band 'The Surgens" about to record a version of "The Happening" from the bossanova Album and need to get permission from Frank Black's publisher, and Frank Black Himself. does any one know who FB publisher is and a contact address / email. Also does anyone know the best way to get in contact with Frank black himself. is it through his record label?
Hope you can help as we would like to put it out on a Nu Blues Compilation
Cheers

Go to:
http://repertoire.bmi.com/startpage.asp
and do a search under" Songwriter" for Thompson, Charles.
This gives publishing details for 243 tracks, and gives contact details for Rice and Beans Music.
Good luck!

Yes as soon as its finished i will upload a copy. we are currently recording 4 tracks as two record companies want to put out one of our songs on compilation CDs. We are recording the happening this Monday and plan to have it produced and mastered by the (Sunday 1st August) so with a bit of luck their will be an MP3 available on the Monday.
Its a competely different arrangement to Franks. We diliberatly didn't listen to it while we were working on it. It has a very raw bluesy feel with some odd country licks.
We have been playing it live for a couple of months now and it goes down really well. Alot of Pixies fans don't reconise it until the end which is nice.
look forward to hearing your comments

Well the good news is we (The Surgens) have just finished recording our version of "The Happening" and its being mixed and mastered next week. for anyone whos interested it was recorded live at Gizzard Studios London UK. straight to 2 1/2 inch anologue tape using guitars and amps that are 40 to 50 years old. It should sound older than the original? I shall upload our version as soon as its finished. is this were i should put the link?

ya, fbc know's what he's talking about! i took notice. your first post and you get the man to respond to you! that must be a fbnet record!
looking forward to hearing the recording. "the happening" is an AMAZING song. when my buddies say, "fu, wuz s'appening?" i say, "the happening is wuz s'appening mofo."
i believe the last 14 lines of "the happening" is a shakespearian sonnet. (source- vovat) the man is a fu*king poet extraordinaire!
long live frank!
and frank- how many posts will it take for you to respond to fu? how's jack? is he screaming yet? how do you like being a dad?
just kidding. no need for a response. you were more than gracious enough to sign some cd sleeves, chat it up, and pose for a few photos with me and mrs. fu after a killer show in winnipeg a few years back!

Ok this is our (the Surgens) version of “the Happening” that we have recorded for a Nu Blues compilation CD. hope you like it!. you can download it from our website at http://www.thesurgens.co.uk/mp3s.htm
For all you musicians out there: it was recorded at gizzard studios London UK live straight to anologue tape. Lead guitar 1954 Fender Esquire & 1957 Fender Tweed pro amp - 1941 Noble lap steel & 1957 Gibson GA- 20 - 1960 bullet harmonica mike & 1963 Epiphone amp - 1964 Framus bass Guitar & 1964 Ampeg bass amp and a saw (year unknown). no effects pedals were used. so it should sound older than frank blacks original or is this the original?
We are also using this recording session to try and get a record deal so if anyone can recommend anybody that would be great.
Thanks again to Frank and the Pixies for their influence on all the band members over the last 15 years. |
