The July issue of Spin includes the magazine's 100 greatest albums 1985-now:

1. Radiohead - OK Computer
2. Public Enemy - It takes a nation of million to hold us back
3. Nirvana - Nevermind
4. Pavement - Slanted and enchanted
5. The Smiths - The queen is dead
6. The Pixies - Surfer Rosa
7. De la soul - 3 feet high and rising
8. Prince - Sign 'o' the times
9. PJ Harvey - Rid of me
10. NWA - Straight outta Compton
11. U2 - Achtung baby
12. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
13. Husker Du - New Day Rising*
14. Sonic Youth - Daydream nation
15. Liz Phair -Exile in Guyville

Quote from Frank: " I don't even know what I think about Surfer Rosa. But obviously it has staying power like a Velvet Underground or Iggy Pop record. They're not as famous as their big brothers, but go to a record store anywhere in the world and there's probably a copy there. It's the best of both worlds: fame, plus street cred."

The Husker Du entry includes this fun tidbit: "Black Francis claimed that when he formed the Pixies he owend five albums, three by Husker Du. Still Hart was chastised for accidentally eating Francis' dressing-room yogurt after a festival in the 90s."

As is always the case with these compilations, they've included some clunkers. De la soul? Gimme a break.

I regularly listen to one, maybe two of those albums. Maybe 3. Anway, what's wrong with De La Soul?

What's wrong with De la soul is that they did not make one of the best albums of the last 20 years, is what's wrong with De la soul.

imho

Will you agree to there being a better Smiths album than The Queen is Dead?

From that list....

The Bends > OK Computer
The Unforgettable Fire > Achtung Baby (just)
Around The World In A Day > Sign Of The Times

I'm not even sure if Rid of Me is the best pj harvey album really.

I'll leave the obvious Pixies and Nirvana debates, but Surfer Rosa is a better album than Nevermind by a long, long way.

I don't own a Smiths album, apart from Hatful of Hollow on tape, so I've no idea what's better or not.

K, please don't kathryn-pow me, but I've never heard a Smiths album in it's entirety. A few songs here and there, and that's it. But I bought You Are the Quarry, and I will listen to it!

I won't k-pow you, speedy, but I will have to break up with you. It can never work out between us, if you don't adore the Moz, as I do. I am *sob* so sorry and so heartbroken but we must part ways.

P.S. Only two good tunes on Quarry: "Last of the Gang" and "Irish Blood, English Heart." Do you have Vauxhall and I?

OK, I have to defend De La Soul. 3 Feet High and Rising is just an amazing album. And if you follow hip hop (not even going to call myself an expert since I'm a casual fan at best) the production helped change the sound of hip hop after it was released. Well deserving of a top ten spot. Although I'd put both Doolittle and Surfer Rosa in the top ten so I wouldn't say the list is perfect to me ...

Llamandance, you handsome devil:

Hatful of Hollow kicks ass, but it was released in '84, a year before Spin's random cutoff date, so it doesn't qualify. Bastards.

Thanks for explaining. I may have to locate that and listen to it again.

I have 4 of these (Public Enemy, Pixies, Husker Du, Sonic Youth). It's not a bad list IMO but it lacks the more electronic stuff (where's Massive Attack's Blue Lines? It definitely belongs here)

Exactly the same for me. But there are lots of absent like Jane's Addiction, Guns N Roses (they were really famous and brought again danger to rock, attitude... ), Depeche Mode, etc...

I'm happy with the Pixies, but Nirvana in third position and the Pixies in sixth... A little bit disturbing for me (even if I'm aware that Nirvana were more famous than the Pixies).

Nas, Wu-Tang, Sleater-Kinney's Dig Me Out all ranked above Doolittle?

The Replacements-Tim is way too low as well. Tim is so amazing. Then again I'm a sucker for the mats. But for me Doolittle would be number 1 easily. The fight for #2 would be a tough one though.

This seems to be a list of albums that would make people who read Spin magazine think you were cool if they saw them on your Habitat perspex coffee table. Where are all the albums that are fun to listen to? Happy Mondays - Pills'n'Thrills'n'Bellyaches? Manu Chao - Proxima Estacion Esperanza? Sleepy Jackson - Lovers? Teenager of the Year?
"Fun" beats "whiny studenty indie cool" any day of the week.

Well it is cool that Surfer made #6 the others should have been on the list. Glad to see Doolittle was represented.

Glad to see hip hop was represented, because in many cases that was the next shiznet of what was going on at the time... nice to see BDP, De La, Nas, & Public Enemy on there. But where was Tribe?? Hello! Jay Z, I don't know if he should have made the list.

I was suprised that Actung Baby made it on there and not Joshua Tree??? Travesty.

Nice to see more interms of gender representation, but there is still a long way until ladies in music get the credit they're due.

As far as the Smiths debate goes... I would have had Louder than Bombs in there... I think that makes the date cut off.

Surprised the Sugarcubes didn't make the list as well as a lot of really good bands like the Misfits and Violent Femmes... but maybe that didn't make the cut off either.
