Does anyone do it? Has anyone tried it? Good or bad experiences?

I'm just interested, and thinking of trying it. Can anyone recommend any good books/cd's which may help. God knows where I'll find the time/peace and quiet to do it, but I like what I've read so far.

All Zen thoughts welcome ;)

Meditation is the door open for a spirit from outside to come inside of you.

I was introduced in meditation by some adepts of Sri Chinmoy... Obviously their aim was to brain wash people. But usually the weakest only are trapped.

Try to look for help with good local indians (not native americans). And avoid new age movements and pseudo modern Christ churches whatever... unless you think (like me) that you are clever enough to analyse their techniques and to play their games while keeping control.

PS: the realm of Spirits is not a metaphorical joke... Take care.

I call it sitting quietly on my own and I do that quite a bit. That voice inside you that begs to be listened to will protest a little, perhaps by playing a song you´ve been listening to a lot lately or reminding you to pay the light bill and get catfood, but it´s easily ignoreable. If you´re meditating in a group it´s best if you know and trust everybody, some people you might do it in a room with can rob your energy pretty quickly, whether they know they´re doing it or not. There be energy vampires out there - have you ever come away from meeting someone feeling completely drained? then you´ve met one. as for books, I like a guy called Stuart Wilde has some good meditation exercises and work on chakras and the like.

Also, like Joey Jojo sez, avoid new age movements, all that Great White Brotherhood claptrap sounds a little too Aryan to me. It´s the clever one that catches the people who find religion and science too constraining. And if you read of anyone referring to themselves or if the blurb on the book refers to them as a master of any sort, throw the book away. Try and find someone whose humbleness feels genuine to you.

Thanks for the replies JjjjC and Newo. I've no intention of falling for a cult or any such thing (don't they all say that), and sadly where I live is far, far from being multiracial so no chance of talking to local Indians. No it'll have to be done off my own back, using books (thanks Newo) and stuff.

I want to do it mostly to achieve something. I think it can help me, but I'm sure it can affect me in other ways. I'm not searching for inner peace or anything, just focus mainly. I'm sure other benefits will appear if I apply myself to it.

I am going to meditate on that topless photo of Bob Mould, if only I could find a copy.

Seriously, meditation is a great way to start (or end) your day, Llamadance. It needn't involve weird cults or fancy instructional books.
Is there a meditation society in your area? Have you ever done yoga?

He's got a beard on the front facing photo kathryn..

I can't imagine there is a meditation society, and if there is, it'll be at least 12 miles away (civilization). I've never done yoga, there might be a class (12 miles), not sure. I'm pretty sure if I tried yoga you'd hear my tendons popping all the way across the Atlantic.

Don't use the B word! Don't!

Back on topic, it is a common misconception that yoga hurts. If you are doing it right, it should be relaxing and good.
Meditation, too, is relaxing. I'll see what I can email you about it, Steve.
