Since the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie is out I started thinking about the book which was one of favorites as a kid. I thought I remembered the Oompa Loompas were African Pygmies in the book and when I saw some footage of Depp's Wonka in the jungle I thought the new version would contain Oompa Loompas that were closer to the original. Nope, still freaky dwarves. Here's the original illustration of the Oompa Loompas as I remembered them:
and a blurb about the controversy that ensued in the US eight years after the book's release:
http://www.roalddahlfans.com/books/charoompa.php
Technically the Oompa's weren't slaves and even if they were it's obvious that the slavery itself wasn't the issue. Clearly it was alright for the white hippie Oompa Loompas to be "slaves", but not the black ones. Of course, I understand why this was an big issue in the late 60's, but I would like to think the new movie could have included African Oompa Loompas without causing a stink. It's more interesting to me if Wonka discovered some Pygmies in deepest Africa who were adept at making chocolate and offered them a good life in exchange for their skills rather than the Oompa Loompas being some acid trip version of the Keebler Elves. When the foundation of the story is more grounded in reality it makes the unreal parts that much more wonderful. This was why Dahl's books were so great. He would describe the people and places in his stories in a very realistic "warts and all" fashion so when he added something fantastic or magical, it seemed like it could really happen.
People seem to forget this when they make entertainment for kids and are often too afraid to leave in the hard edges.

I was lucky enough to see a press screening of the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory last weekend - it's deliciously dark (like all chocolate should be) - pretty true to the book and I think you may like the explanation behind the oompaloompas and why they are working in the factory. The movie is fantastic and Tim Burton hasn't toned any of Roald Dahl's dark side down and with it being a Tim Burton movie it's a candy feast for the eyes alone.
The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it. |

Wow. Way to overact whoever you are. Not only did she change the picture above, but it now says the same thing on the Roald Dahl site which is supposed to be for kids. What a drama queen. Is it really so bad to be promoting someone's site and linking people to it?

Ahh, she's clever. It only comes up with the asshole picture on the forum and through my IP. Still a pretty hardcore attitude for a fan of children's books.
What's the proper procedure here? Wouldn't it be worse if I saved the pic to my PC and then uploaded it somewhere else? Do I need written consent to post a pic that she scanned from a book herself?

Hey, it's back! For those of you who missed out, the picture was replaced with one that said "I steal images - I'm an asshole". Unfortunately for llamadance's daughter, the image on the site was replaced also.
Seems like my email was received. I guess it could've been an automated app, but she should at least change what it says...

I may email her as a concerned parent, stating that I will be informing Roald Dahl's estate of her inappropriate images. Her email address can be found in her personal page somewhere. Look at faq's or something.

Apparantly, it was an automated app that redirects forums and such that reference her pics to the "alternative" pic. I mentioned to her that she might want to change the wording to something more neutral!

The oompa loompas in the original movie version are of pretty strange ethnic origin!! I mean, what were they, Martians? Deep Roy in the new movie gives them an dignified Indian identity! |

They just represent the third world people. This story is very satirical of the consummary society. May they be black or not, they all look the same!
By da way, the new film is quite good, Johnny Depp is great in the outfits of the bittersweet Willy Wonka (Wanker??). And it fits perfectly Tim Burton's thematical preoccupations... What a deranged man this Burton.. beginning to see what his obsessions are all about...

I've never read the book, but I believe the Oompa Loompas were initially African pygmies, but then Dahl edited the text so they came from the fictional Loompaland instead.

dudes, just don't link to images on other peoples webspace. i'm not saying i don't, but i'm prepared to be called an asshole for doing it. you're using their bandwidth. and i think the reason it showed on the originating webpage was because you had the asshole image in your broswer cache.

I honestly don't see why some people care so much about remote linking. I guess it has something to do with "bandwidth," whatever the hell THAT means. It's a concept I've never quite grasped.
