I am curious, are you the kind that has to listen to a whole album all the way through, or do you sample a few songs and switch artists alot, as though you were a radio DJ?
I find myself being the former, so much so that I feel like I haven't finished a project until I listen to the entire album. It feels like the whole is always a work of art, each of the songs feeding off each other and demanding to be heard in order.
On the other hand, sometimes I'll be in a 'radio' mood, and like hearing dj's blend songs together from different artists.
I think, however, I am more likely to spend my time listening in the 'album as whole' style.
How do you listen?

I always listen to the whole album. I feel weird if I don't. The only exception is if it's an LP I'll occasionally just listen to one side.

I do a bit of both, depending on mood and music.
Does anyone sometimes just need to hear only the first few seconds of a song and then skip to the next track?

I've found that with Frank's later albums, I've had to listen a few times before they grow on me...and then suddenly there's a eureka moment when you realize how fabulous it is.
Anyway, I was thinking more (an obvious sign of demise) that I, too, skip...but very infrequently, when there are songs I know I don't like. Even then though, I usually have this empty feeling afterwards. Goofy huh?

I do a bit of both, but I guess I jump around a bit mostly. I listen to music almost exclusively on the PC, so with all those tracks, it's easy to set it to shuffle and either jump around the whole catalogue or just one artist (which I did with the Frank Black albums today).
When I get a new album, that's when I mostly listen all the way through several times. Not that big on playlists though, then you narrow down the choice.

On first listen of an album it has to be all the way through - no skipping. From there it will require a minimum of 3 listens in different locations - work, my kitchen (along with a good smoke) and headphones on the way to work and if I'm lucky in a car, preferably the husband's since it has good sound but since he has issues with quite a bit of my music it doesn't always happen. After that is done I'm free to skip as I like, though I do have a tendency to listen to whole albums more than skip about them - otherwise gotta put together mix cds but honestly can't be arsed with playing dj every other song.
The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it. |

depends where I am. usually with real CDs it's straight through and with ripped music I jump around.
At work I usually pick an artist and shuffle songs. My friend has a smart playlist where he takes 3 or 4 of his favorite songs from many artists and shuffles by album. That way he gets 10 - 15 minutes of an artist and he's on to the next one.

with cds i have to listen to the whole album. that's why i get pissed when an artist basically forces me to skip forward (i.e. wilco's "less than you think"). it ruins it for me.
now, however, i have an iPod, so the "whole cd" concept is somehat lost since now it feels like i'm simply dealing with 3,000+ songs.
earlier this year i bought the new raveonettes album and my buddy skipped ahead to the single to listen to first. i nearly killed him.

Thriller was the first cassette tape I ever owned. I didn't really know there were other songs besides "Beat It" on the tape until years later.

I tend to listen to the whole album at home, but I often shuffle on my iriver. I have a friend who constantly switches artists, and even skips mid-track sometimes which is very very annoying.

I usually listen to an album all the way through. When I'm on my computer, though, I'll put all my songs on shuffle. Actually, right now, I'm on the computer and listening to an album all the way through, but you've caught me in a rare situation. <g>
I pretty much never skip tracks, unless they're really bad, or I'm in a hurry to hear something in particular.
