tenuous i know, but a mention of the Pixies in Barry Burns' of Mogwai having a spiel about Fashion Bands like The Bravery. http://www.transformonline.com/music/articles/002473.php
Clothes have nothing to do with music.
There’s no clear chemical or biological parallel between a crotchet note and the molecular structure of a crocheted gingham scarf. And in my tiny mind, this must be true, but you only have to open the scrap of cloth known as NME or cast your fatigued eyes upon MTV2’s daily programming to unveil the real facts about the link between how good a band looks and how successful they can become.
When I look at bands like The Bravery or any of those purveyors of emotionless, fashion-based music, I feel a heavy disappointment that our age old occupation of choice often relies on pouting, posing, and three haircuts on the one head to achieve success rather than the production of well composed, good old tunes. If these countless dilettantes spent as much time crafting songs as they did heaping on make-up and frizz-ease, then maybe there’d be something more interesting to hear… something worthwhile? But let’s understand one thing: these chancers are only here to look all nice for the record-buying wee girls in order to distract from the actuality that all their songs are more or less vacuous in content. It seems that only in the music industry you can indeed “polish a shit.” Well, at least for long enough to make some easy, quick dollars snatched from the pockets of teenagers. To Wit: it works like a charm.
Look at The Pixies as the ultimate antithesis to this. Ugly fatties with a total disregard for fancy clothes, yet, in my opinion anyway, one of the greatest pop bands in existence. If they can do it, The Bravery, The Editors, and all their despicable doppelgangers should be able to too. I think it’s that simple. And if they can’t “cut it” in jeans and a t-shirt, they must be shunned.
The sort of sad realisation for me is that the capricious and forward thinking nature of the fashion world proper has much to teach the unchallenging, unchanging trends in music of the last five years. I’ve heard scores of these clone bands and it feels like there’s a real stuckness in the music produced. It’s as if there’s a fear to walk down the catwalk toward something more musically ambitious, so instead we’re punished by the relentless reproduction of the same ol’ same ol’ but with different, more up-to-date garb.
I’m not saying that it hasn’t always been this way in the music industry, it’s just particularly exacerbating at this moment in time. And even though there’s probably an element of old mannism coming from me (“let’s ban all press pictures of bands and make them wear permanent ninja suits at performances”), isn’t it time to just look at the substantive content of a band more closely and try to stop attaching importance to appearance? It’s not going to happen, is it? So what I’d really like is a jumbo flamethrower and three days at Glastonbury in the VIP area. www.mogwai.co.uk

I've been reliably informed the three haircuts in one is refered to as 'the uber do'. My friend met the bravery recently and called me up to see if there was anything I wanted him to pass along. I sent back the message that they had shit hair.
Style over substance some of these new bands You didn't get that back when I was a young girl...
and you're questioning the sciences and questioning religion you're looking like an idiot and you no longer care.

well... i don't think this is any thing new... and for some reason as of late... this whole fashion/rock and roll thing is revived. most likey because the fashion industry and the music industry are both based on repackaging past trends and selling them at a profit.
but this is nothing new... think about the stir the beatles caused with their ...I mean think of David Bowie, another example of a muiscian that had a fashion edge as well.
it seems to me there have always been two types of bands... trendy & fashion concious (which can be good or medicore musicians)or those all about the music...
I mean think... back in the day Duran Duran were the pretty boy band for teen and pre teen girls to pin up on their walls...there will always be a market for those types of bands.
so this is nothing new... it's just marketing...and the reason that these bands with fashon acumen and talent exist is that people don't give a crap and buy their music anyway!
the writer does have a good point... it's about the music.
i just think that some people when it's about music it's about an image as well to them... so each fashion oriented and non fashion oriented fill a niche. |

No they looked and sounded shit then
This guy makes some excellent, if obvious points (just a shame more people don't see it though), but him calling them ugly fatties is utter bollocks. They are better looking than The Bravery for a start.
Don't believe the type!

I dislike the term ugly fatties. it is disrespectful even if he says that Pixies is one the greatest pop band blablabla;.. All the more disrepectful from a member of such a boring band like Mogwai... They opened in Paris last year and played trash hurting white noise, and nothing more... oh yes, the ugly scotto front man expressed his racism towards the Brits and that was all for the content of the performance... pff!! Post-rock: a rock to send far away...

oh come on. whats wrong with the term ugly fatties used in this context? he's simply using it as a comparison to bands such as the bravery.
yes, stuart (mogwai front man) is quite animated in his dislike of the english, but then 90% of all scots i have met have the same opinions. and sure, it's off-topic, but i like mogwai alot. even more than the pixies, and i like "trash hurting white noise" each to their own i guess.
