Seeing as images have been temporally removed, I thought I'd make a few points: Firstly, they say a picture says a thousand words. Which I agree with. Then again, do the prolifiration of images with which the media bombards us stop us using our imaginations?

Well?

Images (Lou Reed & John Cale)

I think images are worth repeating
Images repeated from a painting
Images taken from a painting
From a photo worth re-seeing
I love images worth repeating, project them upon the ceiling
Multiply them with silk screening
See them with a different feeling

Some say images have no feeling, I think there's a deeper meaning
Mechanical precision or so it's seeming
Instigates a cooler feeling
I love multiplicity of screenings
Things born anew display new meanings
I think images are worth repeating and repeating and repeating

I'm no urban idiot savant spewing paint without any order
I'm no sphinx, no mystery enigma
What I paint is very ordinary
I don't think I'm old or modern, I don't think I think I'm thinking
It doesn't matter what I'm thinking
It's the images that are worth repeating

When I met Laurie Anderson last fall, she said that she ddn't care for photography as much as other forms of visual art, because it could not convey a true sense of warmth or atmosphere. I disagree. Someone else made the point for me at the time, but I wish I had had the chance to - I think there are plenty of photographs that break that 4th wall, and soak your mind in the place or thoughts of the image.

Your topic is very interesting Carl. Deconstructing the idea of images - old as Plato (Allegory of the Cave) and Aristotle (the chair -admittedly not a 2D image, but still asks the same questions), all the way to Jacque Derrida, who breaks it down in the form of language, which is very much tied to how we summarize our response to images.

Sorry for the wordiness, I blame it on the red wine and the long hiatus from this forum!

Very nice topic. Also I like the approach of taking a potentially negative situation and turning it into an opportunity. This is great!

Well, I'm glad you did'nt take offence at my attitude over the images situation. I understand that it must be hard maintaining such a well-loved site. You have to take the rough with the smooth, and at the end of the day this is my favorite forum!

does a picture say more?
depends on how you look at it
it doesn't give information.
Think of a picture of burning building

you see a burning building
you can't see what sort of building if
it's a Dutch one, for instance (I asume you don't know Dutch buildings)

you only see a building that's going up in flames

Then you look at the description under the picture

it says
american ambasade in Holland set on fire by leftish terrorists.

Now you know that it's an important building. You know that it's a dutch building. You know that it was set on fire. And you can probably link the American politics with the fact that Leftwing terrorist set it on fire.

Now what says more?
A picture says too much, not the essential information
it's there, but you can't find it

(ps some stuff I learned)

Interesting! I beleieve that you can get basic information from any picture. Even if it's just a monocromatic colour, you see that it's a colour!! (OK, That's a little too simple!!):D

All I can think of here, instead of Plato and Derrida, is Debbie Harry belting out
"Picture This."

All I want is a room with a view.
A sight worth seeing, a vision of you.
All I want is a room with a view, oh.

I will give you my finest hour, the one I spent watching you shower.
I will give you my finest hour, oh, yeah.

All I want is a photo in my wallet.
A small remembrance of something more solid.
All I want is a picture of you.

Picture this -- a day in December.
Picture this -- freezing cold weather.
You got clouds on your lids and you’d be on the skids if it weren’t for your job at the garage.
If you could only oh ooh whoa...

Picture this -- a sky full of thunder.
Picture this -- my telephone number.
One and one is what I’m telling you, oh, yeah.

All I want is 20/20 vision.
A total portrait with no omissions.
All I want is a vision of you, oh....etc.

Maybe that's secretly why Dave banned them. We were putting thousands of words out of work! <g>
