Masculinity: how would you describe it in a man?

I'm just curious what my fellow americans and also everyone around the world thinks about it.

I partially define it as: provider, active, etc

Many masculine men shave their faces.

Funny that this thread is here. A forumette and I were emailing about this very subject not too long ago. We decided it'd be too racy, as we would end up posting about all the things that guys get to do that we as women can't do. There is a myriad of humdrum things that men do that strike me, at least, as fascinating and sexy by virtue of the fact that there exist solely in the male provenance.

Example: shaving one's face. I find it terribly sexy that men do that. It's probably boring to have to do that every morning but it's fascinating to watch a guy shave. The list is too long...

I wonder if women find our being able to pee standing up as fascinating as shaving.

I can read a map and start a fire. Many women can. I'm talking about things that only men can do ipso facto.

The pee-standing-up thing, it's interesting, but not in a penis-envy way. Shaving, definitely, specifically that your faces feel rough compared to ours. Oh, god, the fact that your underwear is differerent, not as dainty, especially the almighty boxer shorts. I also like and constantly notice how men use space differently from women, more freely. A man will take up space, say, when sitting. He'll sprawl his limbs, whereas I always tuck mine in, make myself smaller, which I see other women do, too. Also fascinating -- how men dispense with verbal niceties and get to the point, whereas women rarely cut to the chase when speaking, we tend to meander and couch our points.

Someone else have a turn. I have a long list of things I notice that I consider strictly masculine.

I think to me masculinity = manliness = taking the high ground and maybe sucking stuff up in order to be an adult and doing stuff that isn't always considered masculine... such as cooking and doing laundry... that's such a huge turn on!

Bravery tempered with wisdom, but sometimes also foolhardy courageousness. Strength of character based on a mind that is constantly open, seeking and questioning and at the same time content. It's not soley in the realm of men, but it defines masculinity for me. At the moment I don't know of any character traits that men or women have that the other cannot.

I dont think there are any differences between masculinity and feminity besides physically. The rest is all socially learned and has been for some time.

Balls? Well they provide me with some fun hehe. "Balls", well, are they masculine? Cojones? Everyone has cojones though, right? Or atleast not everyone but people of both genders/sexuality show noble, brave qualities. I dunno, depends how you determine the definition of masculinity. In my mind there is no difference between masculinity/femininity and male/female. Masculinity or femininity is something i think you learn from an early age and identify with. When we are born, are we masculine because we are male? Or do we turn masculine because of the way we're brought up and what society expects of us as a "man"? Now if only there was a 3rd gender...that would really get me in a spin...!

To me, masculinity evokes having a single-minded purpose or mission that no one, not even one's lover can derail or be more important than. Kind of a calling or gift. Men always seek a release after putting in the work.

I also think masculinity is also socially determined to an extent.
Masculinity in this part of Idaho (USA) includes owning a big truck and having facial hair.

Nearly every day, I look over a sheet of paper that defines who I am (more like who I want to be).

What's your thoughts on this list, given below?

Me: defined
-----------

Early riser
Stays busy

Independent
Determined
Assertive
Acts as a leader
Willing to take risks

Eats protein foods
Doesn’t snack much
Doesn’t drink sugar drinks
Self control

Masculine
Competitive
Athletic
Exercises often
Sexually active

Analytical
Explores his environment
Observes

Listens to Rocket from the Crypt
Watches John Wayne movies

Forgive my bluntness:

Men are voracious masturbators (in general). Sure, girls play with themselves too but I think we are all aware of the ratio/frequency of execution here. Maybe it's because for men sex and sexual gratification is intrinsically tied to a one-shot (no pun intended) climax, so this makes us more inclined to "take matters into our own hands" in a goal-oriented, up-and-at-'em sorta fashion. With women, I get the impression that self-gratification of the sexual kind is a far more whimsical, mood-driven process in terms of motivation.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it's interesting to contemplate nonetheless.

take a 300 or above sociology course and you'll have a bit more trouble defining "masculinity" or any other concept or term related to human society..especially gender.

masculinity?
see, we anthropomorphize...masculinity is not just something humans are/have/exude...

I describe it...ummm...hard, rough, strong.

Anything more than that is too subjective?
