valentine and garuda. best FB track ever IMHO.

I think animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

Delved into this again the other day in my car.
Fave tracks: California Bound, Cold Heart of Stone, How You Went So Far, End of Miles...yeah, all the sad ones basically.

I also realized that the first part of Jane The Queen of Love is one of the best songs ever written (just that part of it). Not so right at the first "JAAAA-EEE-AAANE"...at which point the song is just, well, not quite as good. The first part just outshines the rest of it. Does anyone else feel this way?

I used to feel that way too Psychic, the intro bit really is amazing. However, i really like the rest of the song, especially after seeing FB&C's do it live. The track I love most from BLD is Chip Away Boy

This album is great. The section that includes Jane and I Will Run, spectacular.

CA Bound, Valentine, Jane, How You Went, End of Miles, Jet Black River, Farewell Bend, Chip Away Boy, Cold Heart of Stone, (I could go on and on)...

My first and favourite Frank Black and the Catholics (RIP) album. Great songs all the way through and the mood is so great! I love this album. I think the only reason it's not up there with Dog in the Sand whenever people mention Frank's best work is because there are a couple of songs thatinterrupt the flow a bit and would have been best left as B-sides or released on other albums, but other than that what can I say? Perfection! One of these days I'll make my own BLD mix and remove a few songs, make it about 40-45 minutes, and change the track order a bit and have the perfect album.

Recently got back from a long road trip and I can't tell you how perfect BLD is while driving down a long and windy highway. Just about gave me chills at times.

My husband and I especially loved singing 21 reasons at the top of our lungs. We must have been a sight for the cars passing by ;-)

"When I saw the bald bell ringers well,
I knew then that you were toast" - 21 reasons

Definitely one of my faves; totally underrated record.

Perfect for:
1. Driving, the further the better.
2. Background music for coffee + ciggas with mates.
3. When your on your lonesome (see cold heart of stone).
4. Any times not covered by previous.

That solo in End of Miles is just sonic eargsm material.
Plus not one but two covers of the title track of my favourite Tom Waits record. It can't lose.

"I live Cement
I hate this street"

Recently fell in love with this beast of an album. Ive made criticisms of it before, but ive totally changed.

Cold Heart of Stone- CLASSIC
How You Went So Far- CLASSIC
End of Miles- Beautiful
California Bound- Uplifting
Jane- Beauty
The other songs IMO are lesser, but still great. Other than towards the end of 1826, there isn't a dull moment. It's perhaps the most complex 'pop' ive heard.

Who besides me thinks Jet Black River is one of the best songs Frank has ever written? That song is gorgeous! Short and sweet, but gorgeous nonetheless. It's almost a perfect song, in my opinion, from the production, arrangement, to the song itself.

I 2nd that on jet black river. just when you think the album couldnt get any better it just keeps on keepin' on. BLD did NOT have to grow on me at all. I loved it automaticly. DW took like 5 times before i realized its just as fucking good!!!!!!!!!!
oh and jet black river has that kind of comical and funky thing going but kind of creepy at the same time. what the hell is that tune about? classic, classic chord progression

Sort of how like Frank has mentioned that he's ended up purchasing multiple copies of Leonard Cohen's I'm Yer Man, I have ended up purchasing multiples of this.

First copy got scratched and then "Valentine & Garuda" wouldn't play without skipping. This would not do, so I bought another, which I ended up losing. I'm now on my third. If that Catholics box set happens, I guess that'll be # 4.

I'll triple the good sentiment in regards to Jet Black River, and the album as a whole.

...Devil's Workshop is pretty fucking good also.

I too have "rediscovered" this recording. I don't know if it's the summer air or what, but this record is great. I put it on to prep myself for Honeycomb, thinking it might be along the same lines in a way. guess i'll have to wait and see.
