hey, just got this text from a friend who's at the protest in Gleneagles "I know the media reports are concentrating on the anarchist roadblocks but the police have shut most of the roads themselves. They wont let people through to the protest. Its making everybody annoyed at the police. Elsewhere the police have stopped some from even leaving the camps and have trapped some in inner city areas. Not surprisingly some people are getting angry and starting to cause problems in the cities where they are trapped. The police should let us go to our field and protest. There are 6 thousand riot police there so we can't cause any trouble in the field. The police have pretty much caused most of the trouble which is on the news'

Its a shame really, there are loads of people trying to make a positive difference, but its just depicted as people making trouble

typical.

it's presented that way to show us what will happen should we ever decide to think for ourselves and disobey them.
"See what the overreactive, naive people are doing? We are punishing them and we will do the same to you should you step out of line."
I saw a dateline once with a man who used to be in charge of 'disengaging' protesting crowds and he said it was common knowledge that it was OK to push the envelope and take it too far for the sake of dissuading insuring that future demonstrators, not to stop the current activity.
Gee that's worked out well for them.

Despite the rights and wrongs of who's depicting who as what, I can't help feel that the protesters might get more sympathy in this case if they resisted violent action. Now they are just seen as mindles thugs instead of politically motivated people with a just cause.

I agree.
That's my gripe with most PETA protests.

A friend went to one of their conventions not long ago and apparently they feel that it truly does make more of an impact to needle the press into giving them more media coverage when they 'act out.'
Still not sure that's the best way, but they say it works, so who am I to say....
I would never take that approach myself, though, and I also think that not all press is good press when it comes to an organization like that. BUT that is an unpopular opinion and one that the history of the press has shown to be false...
I think it's sad that our society is as such that a peaceable demonstration received no attention.

The sad thing is there are always SOME troublmakers who go along just have a scrap or generally cause trouble. This in turn makes the police paranoid every time there is a gathering of this kind. Vicious circle.

Don't believe the type!
