That's platinum. Or, as they say in England, platinium. |

Oh please. It's much better to share the PIXIES with a bunch of newbies than have the PIXIES die out when we do.
Unless it makes you sad because it took so long to recognize, and happy because they deserve it.
Sorry...I'm feeling very negative lately.

hey bRIAN how old do you think I am? I'm 20 technically I should be considered a newbie so obviously I'm sad that it took 17 years and that it's only still only gold and happy because 500,000 people are A LOT OF PEOPLE!
I also think I should have a better reputation than "newbieslacker"
However It's a drag that you feel negative lately maybe you could visit Holland this summer? I will make tea

Twice today I've been misunderstood due to my apparant bad choice of wording.
First off, I didn't mean you were a newbie, billgoodman. Second, I was sticking up for newbies...which helps me feel good because it turns out that technically you are a newbie. Third, I edited myself to include what you may take wrong and fix it before you would take it wrong...and it still caused you to take wrong. Lately there has been a lot of negative remarks about 'newbies', and 'PIXIES selling out' and 'kids adopting PIXIES as fad' and blah balh blah. What I did was incorrectly take your post as someone saying essentially "great! Now the Pixies are huge and they really only belong to us 'true' and 'original' fans!". I recognized this as being totally out of left-field and an uncalled for remark, so I changed it to: Unless it makes you sad because it took so long to recognize, and happy because they deserve it.
Again, to reiterate...in no way was I labeling 'newbieslacker' reputation onto you. 'Newbies' have to carry the torch and keep our beloved PIXIES burning! Thats what I meant by: It's much better to share the PIXIES with a bunch of newbies than have the PIXIES die out when we do. This has opened my eyes to the fact that negative thinking has swayed me to answer in a hasty fashion lately...of which I have rare tolerance for in others...and yet I am finding myself act this way. Hence the edit addition of alternate view.
As for the tea, I'm sure I won't be in Holland this summer (unfortunately! I've always wanted to visit Holland!), but if mysteriously I do, I will look you up first for a cup!
I was alone...in my BIG BED

Press Release:
PIXIES' "SURFER ROSA" CERTIFIED GOLD
PIXIES were presented with a Gold record last night (June 13) onstage during their show at the Merriweather Post Pavilion outside of Washington, D.C. The award was made in recognition of having achieved sales in excess of 500,000 copies for their 1988 album, "Surfer Rosa." This is PIXIES second Gold award, the first being for "Doolittle" which was originally released in 1989 and certified in 1995.
PIXIES wrap up a three-week tour tomorrow (Wednesday) at Agannis Arena in Boston. The band will then play a handful of U.S. concerts in July, including the headline slot at Lollapalooza on July 23 in Chicago, before heading off to Europe to play festivals throughout the month of August.
PIXIES formed in Boston in 1986 and disbanded in 1992 after recording five albums together and have since been acclaimed as one of the biggest influences on the alternative rock scene of the time. The band reunited in April, 2004 and over their eight-month reunion tour, shattered sales records around the world and were named "Comeback of the Year" by SPIN magazine.

It's also made it into the top ten of Spin magazine's best albums of the last 20 years:

Radiohead album named No. 1
Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Spin magazine named Radiohead's "OK Computer" the top album of the past 20 years, praising a futuristic sound that manages to feel alive "even when its words are spoken by a robot."
The British band's 1997 album edged out Public Enemy's "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" and Nirvana's "Nevermind" on a list in Spin's 20th anniversary issue, currently on newsstands.
"Between Thom Yorke's orange-alert worldview and the band's meld of epic guitar rock and electronic glitch, ('OK Computer') not only forecast a decade of music but uncannily predicted our global culture of communal distress," reads the editorial note on what separated the release from the other 99 ranked albums.
Released between Radiohead's straight-ahead rock disc "The Bends" and the more experimental, electronic "Kid A," "OK Computer" was the album that propelled Radiohead to worldwide, stadium-sized popularity. Though it never went higher than No. 21 on Billboard charts, it won critical raves and a Grammy for alternative music performance.
Years earlier, Spin ranked Nirvana's "Nevermind" the greatest album of the nineties. In the time since, however, editor-in-chief Sia Michel and others simply found they were reaching for "OK Computer" more than the slightly less relevant "Nevermind."
Also in the top 10, in order, are Pavement's "Slanted and Enchanted," The Smiths' "The Queen is Dead," Pixies' "Surfer Rosa," De La Soul's "3 Feet High and Rising," Prince's "Sign 'o' the Times," PJ Harvey's "Rid of Me" and N.W.A.'s "Straight Outta Compton."

Considering its considerable influence, I'm surprised "Surfer" has sold only a half million. I bought my copy in 1990, and thought I was a latecomer. But whatever.
A half million is roughly the population of Minneapolis/St. Paul, a supposed alt-rock capitol. Brings home the fact that most people aren't into alt rock as much as we are!
(Written while inexplicably and compulsively shuffling between FB's "Honeycomb" and Tomahawk's "Mit Gas" albums. "When Stars Begin to Fall" is stuck, stuck, stuck ...) |

Frank in illinoisentertainer.com this week on Surfer Rosa's new gold status:
"It took like 17 years, but I'm not complaining. It's the mark of a cool record -- one that sells, doesn't sell a lot, but steadily sells, year by year. It's always in print. It's always available, and it has a reputation. That is the most important."
