I wanted to post a review as soon as I got home last night, but I was just too worn out. Two Pixies shows in one night is a lot of rockin'.

I really wasn't sure what to expect from the early show at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. I've only seen a band inside the Hall once before, but it was a local band, so that's not the same thing at all. I got there early, so I was able to get in close to the stage. It was a very small show, 1,000 people at the absolute most, which was cool. The entire front of the Rock Hall is a huge glass pyramid, and since it was an early show, the stage was brightly lit by sunlight. I'm used to seeing the band underneath the big Rock Lighting, so seeing them up close, under natural light, with a small crowd... It was like seeing the Pixies in a coffee shop or something. Very cool. There was no opening act, just the president of the Rock Hall introducing the band, so I wasn't quite ready for it when they came on stage. Suddenly there they were... My favorite band in the world! Kim picked up her bass and played a couple of notes just to test it out, then made a face, clearly not pleased with the accoustics in the Rock Hall. She looked at The Man and said "It's like BWOP, BWOP, BWOP!" Then Kim talked a little bit about how CMJ was cool back in the day, because they could look at the little map in the back and see which cities were playing their album. The Man pulled out one of his picks, did a little pantomime indicating that Kim and Joey had their own picks, the one he was holding was one of his, then threw it out into the crowd. I thought I was going to catch it, but the guy in front of me swatted it down before I could grab it. They opened up with "In Heaven". I'm going to have to wait until Pixiesdisks posts the setlist, because my memory is a little bit hazy, but they stuck to the hits for this early set, no Bossanova or Trompe stuff. UK surf version of "Wave". They mixed up the song order a bit from what they have been doing. For example, Vamos came near the beginning of the set. Dave's drums were set up underneath an overhang, so he and Joey had to be deadly accurate with their drumstick-throwing, both caught it though. True professionals. The Man gave me a bit of a scare at one point when he tripped over one of the monitors and went down. All I could think was "please don't hurt your hands" but he came up laughing, much to my relief. It ended up being a short set, probably about 50 minutes, ending with "Gigantic" of course.

The late show had a completely different feel than the early show. It was outdoors, with the downtown skyline behind the band, Big Rock Lighting back in effect, thousands of screaming fans... All the stuff summer concerts are made of. I was very impressed with The Bellrays. I hadn't ever heard of them before, and I'm usually very hard on opening acts, but they put on a great show. I might even buy their album. Once again, I'm going to have to wait for an official setlist to get posted, because I'm having trouble even remembering what song they opened up with. How sad is that? I know "Is She Weird" and "River Euphrates" came in close to the beginning, but I'm not sure if either of those was the opener. Anyway, they made up for just playing the hits at the Rock Hall by playing ALL of the Bossanova and Trompe stuff they've added for this tour. "Stormy Weather" is one of my favorite Pixies songs, no matter what anyone else says, so it was a huge thrill for me to hear it live. "Alec Eiffel" and "The Sad Punk" rocked hard. They played the UK surf version of "Wave" once again, and at the end someone in the crowd yelled out "Happy Harry Hard-on" which I thought was pretty funny. It seemed like they did an extra-long set, especially after the short set at the Rock Hall. We only got a one song encore though, which was... anyone care to guess? Gigantic!

I don't have a digital camera, so I don't have any pics from the shows. Here is a low-quality webcam shot of my tickets though:

river euphrates was played. It was between stormy weather and sad punk. I have the actual set list itself and it's on there and I remember it being played.
