I freaking love them!

What do you think?
Is it a girl thing?
(My hubby just sits in the car rolling his eyes...)
What has been your best score?

A friend of a friend is having one with all their baby stuff.
I just picked up the whole shebang practically for under $100.
All in excellent shape too.

Definitely a girl thing. Spend a beautiful weekend morning driving around looking at stuff that the owners no longer want. And to get the good stuff you have to be up at the crack of dawn.

I beg to differ, Darwin. You can find some pretty cool things at garage sales. Last July I happened across one driving back from San Francisco with my friends. We decided to stop and check it out. I was rummaging through a box of what appeared to be broken glass. The shards were stripping the flesh from my wrists, when I realized it was just an illusion. A pan bigger than my salad bowl suddenly popped up through the glass (which turned out to be fish, not glass!) and I asked the lady of the house how much she wanted for it. She muttered the word "Holland", and of course I frowned, completely confused by what she meant. "Captain Holland? Captain Dan Holland from Disney's The Black Hole?" I asked. Then, either I had blinked, or looked away without realizing it, or something...because suddenly her back was to me...she was now facing the other direction...and she slowly pivoted on her heel, and turned back to face me, saying in a very low tone, "Captain Ron".
I backed away and offered her three dollers for the pan. So there you have it. Garage sales can be full of greatness.

I was alone...in my BIG BED

I got several board games from yard/garage/rummage/whatever sales when I was a kid, but I haven't really been interested in them as of late. They're very hit-or-miss by nature.

Yeah, you gotta wade through tons of crap to get anything good.
But that's one of the reasons I like it. Its like a hunt.

It always rocks when you hit one with good books.

Hardly used clothing for kids saves tons of cash too.

I like to shop at ValueVillage too, haha if there's nothing good at least you can always get a good Halloween costume.

You'd think my husband would be happy that I'm not buying stuff at retail prices...

There's an annual festival in Whiting, Indiana called Garage Mahal, where the whole town is one big garage sale. This year, I picked up such a variety of funky lamps (none over $3) and a very colorful Japanese pachinko machine from the early 60's. Super cool.

BTW, definitely not just a girl thing.

I think the winter is going to be a real whirligig

I just got home from the gym and my crazy, obese, shopaholic neighbor's
set up her annual garage sale (I just saw her garage and driveway jammed
full of stuff). The whole town's gonna be on my street tomorrow at dawn.
This woman's famous for her shopping-addiction-fueled garage sale.
Scary.

I love garage sales and so does my husband, so it is not just a girl thing. Can't say that we have actually hit on some amazing finds, but we enjoy the hunt. Like Vovat....I think most of our board games are from various garage sales. Perhaps the best game we picked up was a Shakespeare pack of playing cards. I had never seen anything like them before and they look like they are from the 50's.

Other than that...I can't think of anything amazing besids a few Frank Sinatra records and one Perry Como.

Oh my gosh! That is just awesome! Thanks for the pick.

Yeah...Carboot Soul is absolutely one of my favs. You know...when I first got the CD I thought the cover looked like it was fit better with some gangsta rap, but now that I know what car boot is...it just makes perfect sense.

Thanks again for enlightening me!

thanks for the tip. I swear you can never keep up with all the good music out there. I guess this is a bit off topic, but know of any other bands with a sound like NOW?

this is only similar because it's very chilled. songs and samples rolling into one another creating one long sound.
things like a train slowly passing by, then a smooth beat
maybe a yodel or too and a little bit of elvis vocals in the background, then gone as soon as they came
probably not for everyone, but a nice listen if you're in th mood

(sorry carolynanna, bit off topic for sure. but thinking about it, that is a nice field on the cover of KLF, and us Brits like nothing better than car bootyin' in a green farmers field early on a sunday, so there is a link. just hidden)

oh, mosleyk, AIR and Royksopp (mainstream and hit n miss as they are) have some nice songs lurkin' on their first records

I used to have a pair of black shorts with a really narrow strip of cloth at the bottom. I really have no idea why they were like that, but I do know my dad bought them for me at a yard sale.

I want to go to a car boot sale, it's annoying leaving the parental home sometimes because I can't nag my dad into driving me. On the plus side he can't give me the "I'm going to slap you madame in a minute if you don't shut the hell up" look anymore.
I bought a superb elvis mirror from a boot sale once, and a hideous orange kaftan I used to swan around the house in. I have a big candle in the shape of a tortoise on my bookshelf I got from a jumble sale, I like random sale crap. I've gotten loads of books and CD's and terrible retro wear that my mum used to despair of. Sigh... happy days

Top tip to the parents, straight from my father this, if you feel like haggling the price send a kid, the people find it hard to haggle with a kid. My dad used to send us up to do it all the time.

Ever done one? I have helped my mum do a couple, the way the people swarm as soon as you open the car! my!

I hope that I will live to see you undress

I was just thinking recently, after watching Ghost World, that I wish we had garage sales here. I know we have car boot sales but I think there is somethign cooler about walking past someone's house and seeing some stuff for sale. It's more random so finding a bargain is even more of a nice surprise.

I guess the grass is always greener. I was thinking there was something cooler about a car boot. I grew up going past peoples houses with stuff for sale infront, or literally in the garage.

Boot sales seem more efficient for the buyer, but then do boot sales often have big things like desks, bookcases, and ancient pairs of skis that have been sitting in the garage for 20 years.
