Should I get my kid a turtle? I'm allergic to dogs, cats, horses and birds, all of which she has requested. Now she's lobbying
me for a turtle, to which I am not allergic. Should I go for it?

Have you ever had a pet turtle? What's it like? What does it
involve?

Thank you.

I had a turtle once. It wandered into my apartment building. It was excited. My roommates and I named him Phil: Protector Of The Nether-Realm. He was always freaking out about something. We got him an adequately sized aquarium, but we think it was too small. After a while he started being less excited. Then it was like pulling teeth to get him to move. So we released him into the Nether-Realm (a forest in an open field across the street, from whence we think he came).

The forest was leveled to make way for a Wal*Mart Supercenter.

Now he's Phil: Protector of the Wal*Mart Supercenter.

I miss Phil.

Well, see, I don't think we did a very good job of taking care of him. He was a wild turtle, so maybe he just didn't take to captivity. Your best bet would be talking to someone at a pet store, or finding a pet care site. I really wouldn't trust my turtle-care. Anybody else here successfully kept a turtle?

No to the turtle Kay. Reptiles require specialized care. they meay do fine for a while but eventually something will go wrong and usually by the time you notice it it's too late. Also turltes are cute when they are young but as they get older tend to lose their appeal. They can get snappy too. I had two when I was a kid I came home one day and my little brother had stuffed one down the bathroom sink drain. A while after that i caught a big water snail in a pond and put it in the enclosure with my turtle. When I woke up in the morning the snail had given birth to a bunch of babies and my turle died from all the crappy water. To this day those experinces bother me. I really think guinea pigs are great pets. Or you could get a corn snake which is super low maintenance and rarely has dietary problems because you feed them mice. You can buy the mice frozen too. Once a week take one out of the freezer thaw it and feed it to you snake. they get kind of big but not too big. I could help you find a baby one.

I still say go with the guinea pig

They have lots of personality. I think I might get one again. They jump up and down and squeak when ever you come home.

Kathryn is phobic about snakes - I reckon her midget has even less of a chance of getting a snake than a turtle.

Isn't there a low maintenance reptile that isn't a snake?

The only turtle I've ever had was killed and eaten by crows. Then I adopted a crow.

See these little cars in the corner of your eye
Creeping lenses with antennas
Clouds are sliding fast these days
Baby robots are sunflowers turning round and round
All the reports they fax you'll never read
Unrolling a bill you'll never pay

kiki - if you really want to give your kid salmonella you could always just hand her some raw chicken. costs less and you don't have to feed it.

Boxes of feeder mice for the snake?

I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied.

my brother had two turtles. I am thinking the were both box turtles.

He had one and that died and then he got the other. I think they died because they were lonley for other turtles. They just walked wherever...

I think the think to keep in mind in terms of bets like other ppl were saying washing hands is so impt... and they prob won't last more than 3 to four years.

It's tough cuz i had allergies too...so i what's it's like to want a pet.
