Here's the setlist for the early show (source : pixies.discs.com) :
"The band took the stage at 7:35 pm.
Dancing The Manta Ray, Gouge Away, Stormy Weather, The Sad Punk, Monkey Gone To Heaven, In Heaven (Lady In The Radiator Song), Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf), Where Is My Mind? , Here Comes Your Man, Vamos, Mr. Grieves, Cactus, UMass, Allison, Crackity Jones, Broken Face, Isla De Encanta, Planet of Sound, Alec Eiffel, Bone Machine, Gigantic, Tame, Hey, Debaser
[encore] Caribou"
And here's the late show :
"wave of mutilation allison monkey gone to heaven no. 13 baby in heaven (the lady in the radiator song) where is my mind here comes your man nimrod's son vamos [extended solo] la la love you is she weird? velouria alec eiffel planet of sound cactus gouge away umass bone machine debaser the sad punk hey
[encore] wave of mutilation (uk surf)"
No "new" songs between the shows, but they keep playing four songs from Trompe Le monde! And two songs from Bossanova...
Just Is She Weird and U-MASS not played yesterday... I fear there will be no more "new" songs except theses ones...

For the record, and assuming I understand the definition of "extended solo", Vamos was the extended solo in the early show too. |

Stormy Weather and Dancing The Manta Ray are played at the both early shows, Alec Eiffel is played at every show, the same for The Sad Punk, so I don't know wich ones are better...
Do you think that there will be more songs from Bossa and Trompe? Or more B-Sides? |

I'll bet money that between the four shows, they played every song they have worked up, and let's face it, that's a lot of songs. I will stand corrected if there's songs from 2004 that haven't appeared yet this year, but I doubt it. |

Yep.
From the last tour, they didn't play "Bam Thwok", "Blown Away", "Levitate Me" (I think so), "Head On", "Weird In My School" (they rehearsed it last year but didn't play it... ). Am I forgetting some songs?
Hope they got some surprises ("The Happening", "Motorway To Roswell"... ). |

Hey!!!!
Went to the early show last night. I don't care that there wasn't more B-sides and rarities. We had a blast!!!! It was amazing. And I loved the setlist. My husband and I felt like we were on a second honeymoon. This was our first Pixies reunion concert and naturally the first time seeing the Pixies as husband and wife. Talk about romantic!
I thought Frank, Kim, Joey and Dave were looking great! Kim's voice was as angelic as ever (especially during In Heaven). Frank had such a commanding presence, Dave's drumming was spot on (and he was having fun high pacing a few songs), and JOEY.....I about died during the Vamos solo. When Dave threw him the drum stick and he used it then threw it back and Dave caught it; just made me giggle with delight. I also loved how Frank just sat down by Dave's drum set during the solo with a huge grin.
Also....anyone catch the acoustic guitar Frank was using? Is that the same one other people have seen him use before during the 2004 (which we weren't able to see)? It had a hole in it. He referenced this guitar (I am guessing he only has one guitar with such a hole in it) during a KEXP interview several years ago.
At the end of the set...everyone came to the front of the stage and thanked every corner of the audience. The audience naturally were on their feet....begging for the encore.
We chose to just see the early show. I don't know what the late shows were like, but I honestly could not have asked for a better show. I would recommend buying the pixiesdiscs CD to anyone!

If the guitar had a hole (an extra one, that is) in it, just below the regular soundhole, the it's probably his Takamine. He says it's an excellent workhorse, but he goes for a better brand when he records in the studio. But if he's worn a hole in it from strumming, then it must be great for playing live; something he does quite a bit. |

My husband and I were there last night and had a blast! We just got back to Seattle. Yes the guitar was the Takamine, he broke a string on it during the show but finished the song he was playing. What a great place to see a show! It is a very small place, very intimate with great views of the stage. All the lousy things you have heard about the security people there are true, however. Frank and the band kind of 'worked the stage' for a while after the first show, soaking up the applause and looking out into the audience, which was very cool if you were there. They are selling discs at the shows through a different outfit than last year, which they will mail home. Lots of new T-shirts, including one with misleading guitar tab for bone machine on it, which we checked against Joey's live performance last night. It was the best show I've ever been to, you can get very close up at the Roseland.

Yep! That was the show we saw too. I got that same T-shirt, and we ordered our CD of the show online before we even met. I have seen quite a few shows at the Roseland (having lived in Portland for 10 years before moving just 45 minutes away) so I knew it would be an excellent venue for The Pixies.
I too loved it when they came out and soaked up the applause. It made me feel so darn special to be there.
I keep hearing about the lousey security, but you know....they were actually really nice to us. One guy even let me skip standing in line to go up to the balcony.
What did you think of Bellrays? I thought they were a great choice to open. We even bought one of their CD's. |

We talked to one nice security guy, the one taking tickets at the base of the stairs on the main floor. While we were outside on the sidewalk waiting for opening, a drill sargeant came out and told us what we could and could not do, saying "If anyone is walking around on the floor eating a cookie or drinking a bottle of water, they will be thrown out!" (Which I thought was really funny). Then he said, "If anyone has a sharpie it will be confiscated!" (He must have been talking about pens, I guess). My husband was mostly bummed out because he was unable to have a cigarette for three hours because he left his driver's license at the hotel and could not access the 21+ area because of it. They would not allow people in and outside, even with a ticket, to have a cigarette. Maybe people will stop checking his id when all of his hair is white? I was getting a disc at the 'new disclive' when the guy had computer problems. He finally put the websites up for customers to use like they were at home. The Bellrays are interesting. They have a very tight act going, play fast, and are an interesting looking group of people. I like the idea of a kind of punk band with a Tina Turner singer. I liked the thrash number they did 4 or 5 songs in. I think that they will appeal to a more mainstream audience than me (radio). The bass player was kind of funny, jumping around a lot & getting down on his knees while playing the same note over and over! I think their singer is their big asset. Did you notice the bass was too loud all night during both acts and during some of the Pixies songs it was hard to hear Joey? Also, I have to say the music they were broadcasting while we waited was really weird. First jazz, then spaghetti-western themes and so forth. Last year they played songs Frank picked out, so I wonder where this music came from. |

Now I see what people are referring to when they talk about the security folks. My husband and I got to the Roseland right when they opened the doors, so we I guess we lucked.
That is funny you mentioned the bass player of the Bellrays. He kinda reminded me of Wayne from "Wayne's World"...I laughed too when he was dancing around and jumping. Hey, but at least he was into it. Their singer had the best stage presence, but I thought her mic was too low (and indeed bass to high all night)...I couldn't hear her as well as I would have liked.
I remember when you could smoke in the Roseland. I really try not to smoke, but when I am at a concert I usually breakdown and smoke. Having that very limited section sure limited me greatly.
thanks so much for sharing your experiences from the show! |

They DID play Bam Thwok last year. I saw it. It was at the Greek Theater in L.A. Charles introduced it saying something along the lines of "this is our new internet song...we'll see if we can get through it in one try." Kim giggled, and they broke into a perfect version of the song. When they were done, Charles said to Kim "That's pretty cool! I like that song!" and Kim added without a beat "But it's for kids!".

I know they play "Bam Thwok" last year... I was mentioning the songs they played last year that are not played this time... ;)
So they didn't play these songs for the moment (I'm focusing only on the 4 shows of 2005). |

I went to all 4 glorious shows in Portland. I flew in from deep South Texas where I live, so it was a long ardurous day of flying. But I am so happy I did. I had never seen the Pixies live and Friday was my birthday so it was the greatest birthday present I have ever had.
As far as songs that they didn't play that they played last year: Levitate Me, Into the White (it was on the setlist at both of the shows on Thursday - the 26th - because I was right on the front rail and could read when they taped the setlist on the stage), and Ed is Dead. I'm sure there were a couple more that I forgot, but those were at least the only ones I was kind of disappointed to not hear. But on the other hand, I couldn't believe that I got to hear Sad Punk (?!), Alec Eiffel, Allison and Dancing the Manta Ray.
That first show, though, (on Thursday) was absolutely incredible. I was exhausted because I started my way there with a 6:25 a.m. flight and didn't check in at my hotel in Portland until about 3:30, but once that music started, I felt a rush of energy. About 3 or 4 songs in, right before they started another song, Kim said something like, "Wow, we're pretty good tonight!" She had a perma-grin on her face all night, through both shows. You could really tell that she was having an absolute blast.
And the last show on Friday the 27th featured Joey going absolutely nuts during his solo for Vamos. I'm not a technical person so I don't know exactly what it was, but at one point he pulled one of the wires from his guitar and started rubbing it between his fingers to get feedback, and then he rubbed it all over his head! And that was after he already played it with one of Dave's drumsticks! I was basically right in front of him and at one point he pointed the guitar at the audience while playing, almost as if he was perfectly posing for my camera.
I got a few good pictures from the second night's shows. I didn't want to be that prick in the front row who kept on using flash photography throughout the shows, so I kept it off. I wanted to enjoy the shows, not be a distraction. Because of that, some of the pictures didn't turn out as well as I would have hoped, but a few were really good (especially of Joey during his solo at the late show). If I get a chance and if there is interest I will hook up my scanner so I can find a place to put up a few. (Any suggestions? Isn't there a site where you can upload photos?)
As for The BellRays, I thought they were really fun and even bought a CD. The lead singer has such a great stage presence. As someone said earlier, she reminded me of Tina Turner. What also should be said, though, was that the drummer was insane. He had so much energy and really drove the band. He was one of the best drummers I think I've seen. The one really big drawback, as somebody said, was that the singer's mic was way too low and it was difficult to hear her. But all in all, I had a really good time with their music and performances. |

hey
just had a vision of Kim and that smile and made me feel all warm. that joey trick is pretty damn nifty, don't really like to wake the neighbours but fuck 'em, i won't be here much longer, time to crank the amp.
I'm still in shock about Alec Eiffel, my favourite pixie song without thinking 'bout it too hard. So can't wait for the Ireland gig.
Please, scan those pics so we can see. would be much appreciated. Try Photobucket.com or Flickr! to upload them for free (Flickr! handles bigger files better)

I scanned the photos, but I didn't like how they looked when scanned. My scanner was producing these lines on all the photos and was cropping them slightly funky. I have already been told to expect a very slow day at work tomorrow. So, what I think I will do is take advantage of the fact that I work at a newspaper and try to convince the graphics guys there to help me out and use their scanner. Maybe they'll even be able to clean up the pictures a bit. Anyway, one way or another I should get those pictures up in the next few days. |

Not to step on anyone's privacy, but Frank's new family was at Friday's early show. What I take to be Violet's kids were bopping at the soundboard for at least a little while. What tipped me off was being shocked to see this woman walking toward me with a small baby in one of those baby slings. I thought "A baby! Here!??" But then I recognized them, and saw that she had her hand over the sleeping Jack's ear. Of course I thought of "The Man Who Was Too Loud". While all four shows were loud enough, I came away from them with no ear ringing whatsoever. Well done. The mix was quite good for all the shows, though Kim's bass was so solid and clear that it was settting off resonance in some house fixtures or something. Everybody was so professional: Dave and Kim as tight as could be; Joey always on the mark in that way only he can be; and Frank being his usual brilliant self. |

First off, fbc, if it's true that even the blurriest shots you would call art then you will be VERY pleased with some of the photos. You can actually make people out and everything!
All right, I need a little bit of help here.
I have the photos on Photobucket so now I'm wondering how I post them here. I know it has something to do with the photo url, but I have never posted a photo on a forum before. Or should I just use the links to the photos and let people go there on their own?
Also, should I start a separate thread? I hate to start another Portland thread, but maybe some people with slow computers don't want the lag time for pictures to load. Plus, maybe some others have photos from this year that they want to share and my thread can be one that is ongoing for any 2005 photos.
Anyone have any thoughts, input? |
