I think it was around Christmas/December of 1993 when Frank was touring with his first solo album and was playing some shows with the Johns. They decided they'd join forces for a few shows (possibly having something to do with Linnel or Flansburgh being sick, but I'm not sure) and the result was a few shows where Frank joined TMBG and together they'd play a number of Frank's songs and TMBG songs. I think this is originally where Frank can be heard leading the improv section of Spy. Somewhere I have some mp3s of him singing Mammal (sp?) and Particle Man. Most of the Frank songs played were off of his first solo album, since that's about all he had then besides Pixies material, and TMBG was supporting John Henry around then, so I think that's the bulk of what they played together. I think it was usually around 30-40 minutes of each show, but I'm not terribly sure. This is just what I've gathered here and there, so I wouldn't take it for gospel truth.

not only the johns but joey played lead. there's an official release: live at electric ladyland. The neat thing is that they open with 'one step beyond'. you won't find it anywhere else.

I had seen the official release kicking around the internet here or there a few years ago, but I haven't seen anything lately, otherwise I'd have ordered it by now. I did have a copy of "One Step Beyond," too. Not sure if I still have it, though. It's very groovy. I didn't see anything about Joey being with them. That makes it even cooler.

Most of the info posted above is slightly wrong. Sorry to be picky, BUT...

That 'Live at Electric Ladyland' is not at all They Might Be Frank. The correct title of the radio show-cum-promo disc-cum bootleg is " Live Thursday June 24, 1993 10pm Eastern," and it is attributed to Frank Black, as TMBG only plays on 3 songs (minus saxophones - keep reading...).

Most of the show is FB + band (at that time - Nick Vincent on drums, Tony Maimone on bass, Eric Drew Feldman on keys, Joey Santiago on guitar). TMBG only performs a few songs: "Mammal" by just John Linnell and John Flansburgh, and then "Particle Man" by John Linnell, John Flansburgh, Nick Vincent, Tony Maimone, and Kurt Hoffman (saxophone). Then for "Tossed" and "Fu Manchu" Linnell and Hoffman add their baritone and tenor saxes, respectfully. For the final song of the show, the entire band (me thinks) plays "Spy," the Giants tune. My copy got badly scratched whilst moving, so the last few songs don't work for me or i'd check w/ my ears.
