I'm doing a little statistical experiment with the songs Frank has written.. It's for my college course...but first, a question before I begin my research:
Did FB use a 'capo' in the Pixies or his personal band recordings? How about alternate-tunings?
...very hot...
..-. .-. .- -. -.- -... .-.. .- -.-. -.-
rock over london, rock on chicago Why the Hell would you use the color 'beige' for your text? |

I don't know if a capo was used when playing live but the records say:
capo 1st fret on Havalina, The Happening and Velouria
tuned up half a step and d-tuned on Palace of The Brine and Letter to Memphis
Hang On To Your Ego tuned either down or up half a step (forgot which one) I Heard Ramona Sing - think high E d-tuned to B
Adventure and Resolution from what i've worked out may be d-tuned capo on 1st, or tuned up half a step and d-tuned.
I Need Peace is d-tuned
Billy Radcliffe capo on 1st 85 Weeks capo on 2nd
Blast Off has some alt. tuning going on (A up to B i think) I've always thought 'If It Takes All Night' is tuned up or down but not sure
Jaina Blues could be open G but still up for debate.
This is all off the top of my head, so I may be wrong (slightly) or have missed a few out. I'll be back soon to see how this is going and to help out Oh, try checking the tabs section. Proverbial's done an excellant job. |

and your right, this is fun
Just had a quick look at the Pixie tabs -
Break My Body, i think the high E string is tuned down to B
Sliver is open E tuning with a slide Here Comes Your Man i now remember is off standard tuning just a little, but not enough to be classed as up or down half a step.
Rock Music is tuned down half a step
Wild Honey Pie is definate alt. tuning. maybe open G? |

Really?! Wow, never saw that before. I play the G barre chord style, but with the B and high E open.
Don't forget, Planet Of Sound and Alec Eiffel both utilise dropped-D tuning!! |

I saw him use a capo (2nd fret) for Dog Gone. I think that was at the Knitting Factory May 5 2002.

And apparently I Gotta Move is cappoed at the 3rd fret. It's great to play, sounds like one of those religious songs played in church years ago by the some local guitar playing girls! :) |

From AlecEiffel.net:
"We have a fake 12-string thing we do - read about it in Musician, actually. Keith Richards was talking about getting rid of the high E, he drops the E to B. So if I break a high E, I'll leave it off for a while. Sounds cool."
"We have a few songs - Allison, The Happening, Stormy Weather - that are tuned up a half-step, capoed up like the Who, just for fun. And we've got to keep going back to those guitars that are tuned up a half step because they ring better."
When I saw FB do Velouria live with the Catholics, and I think on a P reunion set from a festival I taped off VH2, he uses a capo at the first fret. Maybe Kim and Joey only ever played it in standard, just a semitone up.

It turns out the project has to be done in groups, 3-4 people.. so my idea of gathering technical information about Mr. Black's songs was thrown out the window.
Instead, we're determining if Freshmen/Sophomores spend more time on video games than studying. Dammit. |

I saw him play Velouria at McCabe's and there was no capo. Seemed like he was struggling to remember how to play it at that time, though. |
