Before they blew up the kitchy Sands Hotel, it's where I would stay. Good times, people. The bed was circular with gold-colored slippery sheets and a mirrored (circular) ceiling and off to the side of the room a hot tub with velvet curtains. They had an amazingly retro cafeteria, where the burly short-order cook treated you like trash and the food was trashier, none of today's endless buffets, just nuclear-yellow mac and cheese and pancakes made to order. The Sands was where the Rat Pack used to hang out, decades before, and the hotel wore that cred proudly. Instead they got Wayne Newton on a long-term engagement and walking down the gaudily decorated hallways you'd see signs proclaiming "Wayne is home!" with a picture of him with a huge belt buckle a la DITS Frank. Then they blew the place up and the whole town got all family-friendly, which is fine with me. I've spent many a pampering day at several of the surprisingly high-end spas while Mr. Kathryn hit the links, but I miss the old Vegas where I once had dinner with a real mobster and I'll never forget the look on my cousin's face when he realized that I hadn't been lying when I said prostitution is legal in Nevada. Floop, your thread's making me cry.

there is still plenty of non-family-oriented activity to be found in Vegas..
but i know what you mean. the strip is more sanitized then how it used to be (or how i imagine it was)..
Downtown Vegas still has a healthy sketch element to it, and old-school charm. The Horseshoe is my favorite casino personally..

No kidding. Friends who lived in Vegas raved about the place and took us there one night and I immediately understood why. I think I made 26 bucks that night, too.

The brothels are only a cab ride away.
They may try to clean up Vegas, but it's hard to polish a place were desperate people sit around throwing their money away. |

You will love it, Homers, even if you don't visit a brothel.

Also, the one of the best cover songs ever is the DKs doing Elvis' "Viva Las Vegas," am I right, darwin or am I right?

Can't say that I've heard that one, but I do like the original.
If we ever have a fb.net convention, it should be in Vegas. An all-nighter sitting around blackjack tables at the Horseshoe.
Floop, did you get to the Horseshoe? Or was it a strictly on the strip visit? |

Damn, darwin, I wish I'd known that before I went to the post office yesterday! Great idea having FRANCON in Vegas. When's the date?

We should go in August. Vegas is best when it's 110 degrees outside. You feel like you're cleansing the toxins out of your soul when you step out of blasting air conditioning and into the dry heat.
I better get my CDs burned. |

Strange, because I thought mobster 'Bugsy' Seigel invented Vegas (at least the way we know it today) back in the late 1940's. There really were no gambling casinos...maybe small gambling halls, but nothing large scale. I think I'll wait to celebrate in 41 years...which will make me, uhh, 74. Ewww. Maybe I wont wait.
