yet i can't stop listening to it.
does anyone else share this problem?
this show is so irritating because everyone tries so hard to be witty and intelligent, and everyone LAUGHS hysterically at EVERY single thing everyone says, and in that very "i'm Harvard educated and i get the obscure reference so i'll giggle excessively, even though it's not really that funny" type of way.. hahahaha!!!
i would love to be a part of the studio audience and try to out-laugh people. just keep laughing until people look over at me and become disturbed.
ok, i have to go. Says You is on |

This thread and the Garrison Keilor thread must mate and create annoyingly witty self-referential over-educated threads which will be under constant pressure by the Republicans.

Same. And Terry Gross? I know I'm supposed to rave about her and her show, but, jeez, it's all so....self-congratulatory and high-brow and smug. Or maybe I'm confusing the programming with the listeners I know.

To be fair, she does kickass interviews. And I think it was on her show that I heard something about DITS, which I am now completely spacing on.
Still....
Though it's the last bastion of semi-free thinking and despite its American Life spawning the mirth-y David Sedaris, NPR gets on my nerves if only because I know way too many of its smug, overly educated listeners.

I really like Fresh Air and This American Life. Even this morning Fresh Air had a very good interview with Brooke Shields. You would think it would suck, but it was about her post-partum depression and touched slightly on the myth that parents instantly and completely fall in love with their kids. The old, everything is different now bullshit. |

darwin, I know you're the one with the fancy Ph.D. so far be it from me to correct you, but I believe the expression is: "everything is new."

I was parroting the 9/11 theme. Maybe that was "everything has changed". The other was the "Death of Irony" - thank god The Daily Show killed that idea quickly.
I also still like listening to All Things Considered/Morning Edition (not as much as I use to) and an occassional episode of Car Talk. But, I am an overeducated listener. |

I was parroting the Frank Black song. Seriously, now that I've bashed NPR I have to say that I wished I'd heard that episode of Fresh Air. I'm curious about Brooke Shields' book and I know that Terry Gross asks good questions.
P.S. To floop, there's an expression that goes "he/she has a face for radio". It came to mind when you mentioned that you mistakenly assumed Terry Gross would be hot.

That's thought provoking, E. Is that an original quote or one taken from The Greats?

I just...I just... I'm sorry! I don't have a good reason. I'm just a bad, bitter, horrible person. I am wrong. It was wrong to have done so.
I have to listen to This American Life right now.Talk to you later.

Her last name didn't make you suspect otherwise? :P

i used to have a crush on a girl in jr. high with that last name (she was hot).. so no, i was fully aware that girls with the last name Gross can, in fact, be hot.
I guess floop WAS right!

Dr. Crabs sounds like he could be some comic book villain. Although preferably without that S at the end.

I kind of don't see how anyone could NOT know about Delilah. All you have to do is flip through the easy listening stations in the late evening, and you'll hear her about 80 times.

But you don't ever catch a snippet of Delilah while flipping between metal channels?
