not that it's any of my business. but i'm just curious if the line in End Of Miles is really out of his life, or if it's just part of the song..
it would be a shame if he did sell it because it's a fucking cool car

I'm convinced I remember shots & an interview with the man driving said car along the coast in California while smoking a joint in NME many many years ago. One of my great regrets is throwing those old issues out. I'd love to re-read them. |

Well, if you look at frankus blackus's profile, which was written well after that song, it says he is currently restoring his 1986 Cadillac, so perhaps he didn't really sell it.

Yes, but it was the lost South American civilization, not the car.

If it's sturdy enough and I have good enough balance, sure. Why not?

I actually 'touched' his El Dorado! I was talking to him outside McCabe's in December 2000 after a solo show. He signed a UK version of DITS for me (I was so excited to have it 2 months before the official US release!) and a photo. We chatted while he sat in his Big Yellow Tank I was leaning against the open drivers door. Very cool. He then roared off down Pico Blvd. at 1am. All I remember thinking was he must get shit for mileage.

If I had a big yellow Eldorado (and let's imagine for a minute I could drive) I wouldn't give a shit how much mileage I got out of a tank of gas. |

Floop! Did you see the early or late show? I saw the late show...Lyle Workman showed up and played along with Frank...as did Moris Tepper, and Dave P. Frank was very lively and funny that night. My pal and I dubbed it The Frank Black Comedy Jam. The best was when he played Dog in the Sand. I already had learned all of DITS by heart, but the majority of the audience was hearing it for the first time...when he got to "kill it with your shoe", some uncomfortable giggling rolled through the spectators. It was great. So yeah, I leaned on his El Dorado.

i was at the late show. for me, that was the first time hearing those DITS tracks. so it was a special show. i remember being blown away by Hermaphroditos, the way he hits those super high notes. i had never heard him sing quite that high i don't think.. i loved the first part when it was just him and Dave P. on pedal steel guitar. and they played I've Seen Your Picture .. man, good stuff.
i remember i actually didn't have a ticket for that show, but went down there hoping to get one from a scalper and lucked out. my girlfriend at the time was there too but we got there at different times, and couldn't sit together.
ah, memoires..
so did you just hang out after the show then? i did that once at a McCabes show back in like 96 and got his autograph... i'm keeping my fingers crossed that Frank will pop in there one of these days. he seems to like playing there |

Yeah...my buddy and I hung out behind McCabe's for like 30 minutes...then some guy who worked there said I'd have better luck seeing him out front since his car was parked out there. Sure enough, once we got to the front of McCabe's, there was that El Dorado (somewhat 'parked half off the ground'...front right tire was on curb...heh). We lurked in the shadows for quite a while. Lyle came out. I talked to him for like 10 minutes. He was swell. Then came Frank. He kinda tried to lose me at first, which made me feel like a stalker (but the 50+ minutes of lurking in the shadows at half-past midnight didn't...go figure). Anyway, he quickly became very generous with his time. We talked about DITS (although he signed my cd as stated earlier, he was irked that I had it before it's release date...I explained it was an import that I paid full price for, but he insisted it was promo) and the Catholics in general...that I was so excited as it had been two years since I'd seen him play. He was very gracious, shook my hand (the first time I met him, that two years prior, as I have told on this site before, I drunkenly asked him for a hug...which he obliged with a huge grin and a chuckle) and drove off. 15 minutes later on the 101 Freeway, my friend who was driving spotted a yellow El Dorado coming up behind him! Ecstatic, I told him to slow down so as to let it pass us, hoping to wave to Frank. Our excitement became overwhelming as the El Dorado gained on us, signaled and swerved into the right lane, and proceeded to pass us...ON MY SIDE!!! I got my waving hand ready...only to see it was an old black woman passing us. Oh well. Maybe he drives in disguise.

that's such a cool story.. i love the image of Frank in his caddie on Pico Blvd. pulling away from McCabes (McCabes is like a mile from where i live.. i can't get over how cool it is to thinking of Frank hanging out in my hood)..
yeah, i remember Morris Tepper. that's probably one of the only shows they played Llano Del Rio live, i'd be willing to guess... (complete with african drum and banjo). and the EDF maestro.. i remember they all looked so cramped up there on stage :)
and i do remember all the jokes.. especially Frank making fun of Dave Phillips for chosing "Fresh Choice" to eat up in Santa Barbara (some salad place).. guess you had to be there |

Great story Transmarine.
The "Fresh Choice" choice must have been when Frank and Dave played at Rocks in SB. The salad place (which is no longer there) is right across from Rocks and right across from where I worked. |

Floop, remember when, I think it was one of the last songs, before he did Where is My Mind? when he started Steak n' Sabre, but broke it off saying something to the effect of "I can't remember how this one goes" and jumped into Solid Gold?
YES! I DO remember the Fresh Choice story! There was a Fresh Choice by my house too, but thankfully it closed down. Also, when he tried desperatly to have Lyle follow him through his performance of Angst! Poor Lyle was so confused. Yes...the LLano del Rio was superb. I've only seen the Catholics do that one other time at the Coach House in S.J. Capistrano...my favorite venue to see the Catholics. Hopefully we will be lucky enough someday to see them again.

hey wait a minute, i was at that show too :) i don't remember Llano Del Rio though..
it's pretty safe to say that any show in the Southern California region, i've probably been to..
[edit] transmarine - i don't remember the specific instance you're talking about, but i've seen him do that a bunch of times. where he'll start a song and then change his mind and go into something else right away.
but yeah, the Fresh Choice thing was funny. i almost got the sense that Dave P was getting mildly 'hazed' being a newbie and all. Frank was like, "that's the last time we let Dave choose where to eat".. joking around |

I have a load of old magazines with Fb interviews, and I got a couple more off a friend who was throwing out old mags recently. I could scan them, but I don't know how do it properly, y'know, make the pages not too big or too small! |

Floop...I've seen FB&C at Coach House 4 times. Oct '98 prior to Pistolero; May 2001 during DITS tour; Jan 2002 solo show; Aug 2002 Catholics show minus Scott (David Lovering substituted). Seen any of these? I hope so because there are stories to tell!

Floop, I wonder if we've seen more same shows. How about the Mint in Dec. '01. Tepper opened, and E.D. Feldman played bass (!) while some other guy was drumming...sound familiar? One of the best shows I ever saw of FB&C's was at the Galaxy Theatre in O.C. 4/02. Awesome. But the opening acts were atrocious (as is the case with MOST of Frank's opening acts. The most intimate show was perhaps at the now defunct Fabulous Foothill in Long Beach. Intimate because the place is about as big as a garage and I was about 9 inches away from the band. Literaly. There was no boundry between the stage and the floor. It's creepy...but has anyone else here ever been the uncomfortable victim of constant 'Frank Eye-contact'? It seems every time I see him he is staring RIGHT AT ME. Anyway. Where else. The Glass House in Pomona 6/02 was great. Again, no dividing line between the floor and the stage. For those of you never having been to the Glass House, there are two stages. Main stage, in a sizebale auditorium, and then the smaller stage which is in a room about the size of a shoebox. Big shoes, nevertheless, a shoebox. Frank played the smaller room. The stage was about 10' x 10', and somehow Frank, Dave, Scott, EDF, and Rich, AND two slide guitars AND all of Frank's guitars AND EDF's keyboard AND Scott's drums AND sound equipment, amps, etc. ALL FIT. It was great, because Frank tripped and almost fell about 5 times. Oh...at a Coach House show, this kid with a mullet got picked on by the audience when Lovering used him for an experiment. He was about 13, overweight, bad-ass mullet AND a cool t-shirt that said FRANK BLACK inside an American flag. Anyhow...now I'm rambling and my boss is coming right up behind me

i wish i could find the "your personal frank gigography" thread again. i don't feel like compiling them again...
i went to a mint show at that time, but no EDF on bass.. if i recall there were shows two weekends in a row.
my girlfriend and i stood next to where Joey Santiago and his wife were sitting. my girlfriend chatted with his wife for a while (they seemed to hit it off). Joey was on the other side and i was too afraid to talk to the guitar god.. but it was a cool night. i specifically remember Joey saying (in reference to Rich Gilbert) "that guy is the best guitarist in Boston, hands down".. is Rich from Boston or what?
anyway.. i also remember people from the back yelling at the people in the front (at the tables) to stand up.. which was amusing. i actually kind of hate The Mint for that reason. i think it's a lame set up..
anyway, i'll try to find my gigography.. it is extensive |
