I realise this is a pretty marginal subject, but still...
I'm dying down here. There's one point to divide the bottom four clubs, and three of them have to go down. Obviously, I want Southampton to stay up, and we've done ourselves the power of good beating Norwich. Now we're ahead of Palace on +1 goal difference. West Brom have got Arsenal and Man Utd coming up, they're on their way South. Norwich absolutely needed a win today and didn't get it, so I'm thinking they're on their way too.
Really, it's down to the biggest match of the season next week - Southampton vs. Crystal Palace. It'd be crazy to write anyone off given the situation, and ideally it'd be both teams to stay up and Portsmouth go down, but I think Southampton might nick it and stay up. It's Man U on the last day, so there's always a chance of 6-3 there...
Anyway, this probably makes no sense to most of you, but the tension's killing me here.

I'm sorry, but like you said, I have not the slightest idea of what you're talking? I know its not about music. My second guess is sports? Cricket? Football?

I kinda want Norwich to stay up 'cos they are entertaining, but I realise it probably isn't going to happen. I also would have liked West Brom to make it 'cos of Robbo, but again, it's unlikely.

Id like to see Southampton to go down. They've been in the Premier League for years now, so they are due for a spell below. I like seeing 'big' name clubs go down, though im not sure how much money the Saints have, id like to see either Norwich or Crystal Palace to stay up seeing both only got promoted last season. |

Simon, my suggestion is that you start watching (or playing) the only game that matters: hockey.

What are the odds, hey, both the Southampton fans on here.
Brackish Heart, with all due respect, shut the hell up. Southampton are a Premiership side, Norwich, West Brom and Palace aren't, its as simple as that. I was sad to see Leeds and West Ham go down as well - they're proper top-flight teams. It's also really sad to see Forest down to the second division as well.
Zub, have you considered disowning your sister? A Portsmouth fan? What's she thinking?

Got to say, my heart is with Norwich on this one. I lived there for about seven years, and I still miss it on occasions.
Looking at the fixtures, I think I fancy Crystal Palace to stay up though. They seem to be playing the best football, home to Soton and away to Charlton who just got roasted today.
Norwich have got B'ham and Fulham, neither with anything to play for, whilst both Southampton and WBA have Man. Utd to play - who are still gunning for 2nd spot. So in summary, I reckon Southampton and WBA relegated with probably Norwich. But hey, if you win next week at Palace, it all changes.
More exciting than the title race anyway.

If you have that attitude you may as well just scrap the whole english premier league promotion/relegation system and have a set 20 teams in premier most likely depending on amount of money/fans etc they have. I see Wigan is likely to come up next year - bring it on! Well if Southamption is good enough they'll get promoted next year from 1st div if they get do get relegated.

is it possible to explain relegation quickly? my understanding... x amount of teams play in the premier league and the bottom (how ever many) get dropped down at the end of the season for the following year with the top (how ever many) coming up from div 1. playing in the premier means better teams to play against which means better players which means more revenue from ticket sales etc. easier to sign top-flite prospects as a premier league team because they have more profile/money and you get more sponsorship/advertising money. all we ever hear about on the sports ticker over seems to be the premier league. |

Heh, I'm just messing, man - obviously I'm not approaching it from an entirely impartial viewpoint.
Shiney: the Premiership is the top division in the League, and if you finish in the bottom three then you get dropped down to the lower league (I won't name these - this year it's just got a million times more confusing). The top two clubs from the next league down are promoted, and there's a play off between the teams ranked 3rd to 6th for the final spot. Being in the Premiership means tons more money, more coverage and everything. If you finish at or near the top, then you qualify to play in the pan-European tournaments the next year, the most prestigious of which is the Champions League (something of a misnomer, there are four teams from the English league in it each year!) Basically, my team (Southampton) traditionally don't finish anywhere near the top, and generally fight against relegation. However (my point to Brackish Heart), Southampton have the second longest record in the division of not being relegated (after Liverpool, a massive club). I reckon we just might scrape it. West Brom are almost certain to go down with their remaining fixtures, and if Southampton can beat Crystal Palace next week then we should be OK, just. If we draw, we really need to beat third-placed Manchester Utd on the last day of the season - not likely, but not impossible, by that stage they'll be guaranteed third, I think, so they won't have anything to play for (that's my theory anyway). It's been done before, and we've had some reasonable results against big clubs this year. Here's how it stands today:
Southampton - Pld 36, For 42, Against 62, GD -20, Pts 31 Crystal Palace - Pld 36, For 37, Against 58, GD -21, Pts 31 West Bromwich Albion - Pld 35, For 33, Against 58, GD -25, Pts 30 Norwich - Pld 36, For 41, Against 71, GD -30, Pts 30
Obviously, its points that count firstly (three for a win, one for a draw). If points are level, then it's goal difference (number of goals scored minus goals against), on which Southampton are one up against Palace and better than the others. If points and GD are both level, then it's Goals Scored which counts, and again we're in a better position than the rest. West Brom play Arsenal today - they're very likely to los. This is as close a relegation battle as I can remember, it's extremely tense.

Thirty eight. If you click http://stats.football365.com/dom/ENG/PR/runin.html that'll give you some idea of the possible permutations. This time of year is typically the only time the English male will use maths.
EDIT: by the way, that chart doesn't appear to be totally accurate - Chelsea have definitely won the title, they can no longer finish 2nd. Check out that Goals Conceded! 13? That's insane.

in hockey we have awarded goals, that's the only time a goal counts without actually entering the net. |

I'm pretty sure that's what I heard. Southampton have been top flight since the late 70's, I think, so other teams have been in the top division longer, but Southampton hadn't been relegated in the second division for a long ol' time. It's one of those convoluted statistics that you can twist to fit anything, I think! In fact, Southampton were in the second division when they beat Manchester Utd in the FA Cup final, not sure if you're aware of that...
And Shiney, I take it you're not being facetious. Conceded goal = goal scored against you, maybe?
By the way, those keeping up, WBA lost to Arsenal today, so...
Southampton - Pld 36, For 42, Against 62, GD -20, Pts 31 Crystal Palace - Pld 36, For 37, Against 58, GD -21, Pts 31 West Bromwich Albion - Pld 36, For 33, Against 60, GD -27, Pts 30 Norwich - Pld 36, For 41, Against 71, GD -30, Pts 30

con·cede ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kn-sd) v. con·ced·ed, con·ced·ing, con·cedes v. tr. To acknowledge, often reluctantly, as being true, just, or proper; admit. See Synonyms at acknowledge. To yield or grant (a privilege or right, for example).
i thought it was like "yeah these guys are too good, let's just give them a goal so we can go home early and not even play, let's concede the match"

Don't tell me how to run my threads man. I don't interfere with yours. You wanna make something of it, we can take it outside.
So anyway. Season's full of upsets, as it turns out. Liverpool beat Chelsea? Who'd have thought it? So they can now win the most prestigious title in the world, and possibly they would still not qualify, at the expensive of near-neighbours and bitter rivals. Funny old game, innit.

Big day today, Saints vs. Palace. This is it I reckon - if it's going to be Southampton or Crystal Palace to stay up, this match'll decide which. Technically, Palace could win today and Southampton oculd beat Man U next week, but the odds are pretty slim.

Good man. I was always a bit too lazy to go to the matches - I haven't been to St Mary's yet, and the only time I went to the Dell, I saw Matty Le Tissier's awesome free kick against Wimbledon that used to be in the MOTD titles.

Nice, both sides down to ten men. Crouch going off is a big blow for us, but I think we've got enough talent in our strikers to compensate. Kevin Phillips is pretty great, and Henri Camara's been excellent this season. Let's just hope AJ get's another yellow.
