Anyone else heard this? - apparently the venue is still to be confirmed.
Okay - none of this will appear to make any sense now.

I would have expected one in London on the Thursday before they play Reading to be honest, so this is a surprise.
We have to be on the lookout for more on this, let each other know ASAP. Where did you hear this Nic?

Some weird mailing list that I am somehow on - seem to think they were the ones that gave me the heads up on the second set of London dates last year, so it'll be interesting to see if it's true. I'll be able to check it all out a bit better next week.

From the Glasgow Evening Times:
http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/hi/news/5038389.html
----
INDIE icons the Pixies are returning to Scotland to perform at T on the Fringe.
The concert comes a year after the Boston band played at T in the Park - their first Scottish gig in 13 years.
Promoters said today they will headline a "spectacular" one-off outdoor show in August before 15,000 fans.
Three other bands will appear before the Pixies take the stage at the first outdoor event T on the Fringe has held in its six-year history.
Dave Corbet, of DF Concerts, said: "We are extremely proud of how much T on the Fringe has grown over the past six years.
"This is the first outdoor show that the event has ever held and it will be a fantastic addition. The calibre and diversity of artists we have each year just gets better and better."
George Kyle, of Tennent's Lager, said: "This is a very significant announcement."
"Announcing an artist of this calibre is a huge coup for T on the Fringe and firmly cements the festival's growing reputation as one of Scotland's best music events."
The Pixies will appear at Meadowbank Stadium, Edinburgh on August 28.
Tickets go on sale at 9.30am on Friday and will cost £30

That's fabulous.
Thursday the 25th is the Paris show. So an English (London?) show could be following on from the Edinburgh show... Wishful thinking!

Yeah it's confirmed. You might want to change the title of this thread now Nic.
"PIXIES are to play a huge outdoor summer show in Scotland.
The band, who reformed last year to huge acclaim, follow their headline appearance at the Carling Weekend: Reading And Leeds festivals by headlining the first ever T On The Fringe outdoor show, at Edinburgh’s Meadowbank Stadium on August 28.
Tickets go on sale on Friday (May 6) and are £30. To get them, telephone 0870 169 0100 or visit gigsinscotland.com."

This is pretty cool, only the second Scottish gig since the reunion. Can't wait. There are normally some really good bands during T on the Fringe, in fact FB and the Cs played the event a couple of years back with a gig at the city's Liquid Room - a brilliant night as I recall. But who would have expected this?! For anyone coming from further afield, Edinburgh will be buzzing in August when the festival is on, it will make for a brilliant weekend. |

Going to the gig today, should be great - hopefully the rain will hold off - and I return to the forum after a couple of years - not having internet access in work is tough! |

Just home from the gig, it was great. Can't give you a set list as I was far too busy enjoying myself! Lots of songs played, all sounding very good, some personal favourites on the night: La La Love You, Winterlong, Gigantic, Stormy Weather, U-Mass...and on and on I could go. |

Very good indeed. Setlist was:
Caribou Ed is Dead Bone Machine Broken Face Gigantic (encore) Where is my mind? Cactus Vamos Debaser Tame Wave of Mutilation (both versions) I Bleed Here Comes Your Man Monkey Gone to heaven La La Love you Hey Gouge Away Blown Away Stormy weather Planet of Sound head on U Mass Winterlong Into the White In Heaven
The band was in fine form, and in a very good mood. Frank mentioned that Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf) had been recorded in Edinburgh (was it not Loanhead Frank?!). Kim made some comment about the weather holding, it was quite a wild and windy night, and Frank responded that it was "balmy". Towards the end there was also a bit of banter during which Frank asked Kim is she was enjoying herself, before asking the question of Joey and DAve. It ended up being a Waltonsesque good night from the band.

A review by Gary Flockhart from today's Edinburgh Evening News:
The Pixies ***** Meadowbank Stadium
FRANZ Ferdinand's upcoming Princes Street Gardens double-whammy may be the most anticipated gig of T on the Fringe 2005, but Scotland's finest will have to go some distance to match the brilliance of the Boston-based Pixies.
With a stellar supporting cast of Idlewild, Teenage Fanclub and My Latest Novel all appearing on last night's bill, a lesser band, it has to be said, would have been in real danger of being upstaged by any one their warm-up acts.
Not so The Pixies. The seminal US alternative rockers blew away all-comers during a blistering 90-minute set that did nothing if not confirm their reputation as the one of the best bands in the business.
With perhaps the hardest task of all, Greenock's My Latest Novel took to the stage at around 5.30pm in front of a half-empty stadium.
The early birds in attendance were rewarded, however, with half-an-hour of infectious indie-pop from a young band who will be on many people's iPods before the year is out. With tracks like Sister Sneaker Sister Soul, it's not hard to hear why the Bella Union-signed six-piece are tipped to go stratospheric.
Next up were perennial crowd-pleasers Teenage Fanclub, who got the crowd going with a selection of old favourites alongside a scattering of newer tunes.
The most disappointing of the three warm-up acts was the one given the best support slot.
One of the most overrated bands around, Idlewild didn't really appear to convince anyone of their merits, and many punters used the band's sleep-inducing set as a chance to refill at the bar. There was no danger of anyone missing the main attraction, however.
The Pixies, for those not so familiar, hit the music scene at the tail-end of the 80s like a meteorite, released four near-perfect records, then self-destructed due to internal arguments within the band.
After a 13-year hiatus, the four-piece buried the hatchet in April last year and have been gigging globally ever since.
Sauntering on stage like seasoned pros, they launched straight into a rousing rendition of Bone Machine.
The huge audience - including old-skool fans and younger ones who caught on through one of the countless Pixies-influenced bands out there - were then treated to an ageless back catalogue of classics like Tame, U-Mass, Monkey Gone to Heaven and Planet of Sound.
The biggest cheers of the night were reserved for the surf-damaged punk-pop of Debaser, Wave of Mutilation and Gigantic.
Currently enjoying one of the most commercially and critically successful comebacks ever, the pioneering Pixies, who are credited with inventing the quiet-loud-quiet dynamic that made Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead famous, appeared playful and loose yet intense during their headline slot.
The band didn't talk much during their time on stage, absorbing instead all the love thrown their way from an ecstatic crowd and turning it into white-hot kinetic energy.
Pixies 2005, then: still the best rock band on the planet.

Nice venue, lots of people and the weather was actually refreshing being so close to the front!! Anyway great gig, Planet of Sound rocked big time. Stormy Weather was a nice little bopping dancealong. Perfect! |

Heee heee that were great.
Actually quite enjoyed Idlewild - after many early gigs where they were amazing, I had the misfortune to see them support U2 earlier in the year - all their life seemed to have been sucked out of them (this might have been because they were supporting U2 at Twickenham in front a crowd who didn't care, or as I thought at the time, because they were playing their grown-up new album) and Meadowbank was something approaching a return to form. Teenage Fanclub were lovely as ever.
The Pixies meanwhile have become more fun. I don't mean musically, energetically etc - but in terms of banter etc. Closing the set with Waltons-esque 'goodnights' between band members whilst playing the close of 'Gigantic' was hilarious - this kind of play was a real pleasure to watch.
Tried to get pics on the phone but the only one you can see any of is this one before they began...

I took a few pics and a couple of video clips with my phone. How do you put pics on here??? I'll put them on if i know how! The video clip i took during monkey gone to heaven is pretty weird, frank is a shining white (from what looks like the a spotlight) throughout like some sort of angel, it's great! Into the White was also great with the swirling winds, white smokey stuff going round. Stormy weather, its scotland hehe. Anyway, im drunk and rambling again hehe. Talk soon! |

Excellent gig, I didn't have my digicam with me so I took a picture with my phone. Got some videos too but the sound quality is a bit gash. Can upload if anyone wants to see though.

Another five star review, from the Herald (30/8/05):
http://www.theherald.co.uk/features/45918.html
Pixies – T on the Fringe, Meadowbank Stadium It was a sign of the times when a huge placard at the side of the stage at Meadowbank Stadium, reading, "Crowd surfing and moshing are dangerous – don't do it", was obeyed at a Pixies concert. But then, the average Pixies fan is now at least 30, and much more sensible than they were when they turned out to see their idols around 15 years ago. This was the type that came on Sunday night, older and wiser perhaps, but no less a fan and no less seduced by this dirty, sleazy, romantic, angst-ridden quartet from Boston than they were as a teenager. I'm one of them. Pixies (aka Frank Black/Black Francis [pictured], Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering) ripped on stage and assaulted us with exactly what we wanted to hear. It was non-stop hit after hit, no chat, no posing or posturing, just pulsating, guttural guitars with Frank Black yelping more demon-like than ever, and Kim Deal rasping breathlessly over her pounding bass, bland and asexual, yet so very sexy. It was the most energetic and manic thing I've ever experienced, yet at the same time it seemed effortless, the band exuding absolute calm, creating perfect harmony in their discordant mayhem. We were pummelled with a back catalogue of love, death, sex and heroin – Bone Machine, Wave of Mutilation, Broken Face, Gouge Away, Hey (one of the best, most perverse love songs ever written), Debaser, Tame and Where is my Mind?. The crowd were there to hear as much as they could and the band gave them as much as they could. The sound was fantastic, and the venue coped better than I imagined. They encored with Gigantic, which is exactly what everyone wanted them to do, bowed politely and said, "Good night, y'all", before leaving the stage. Perfect. Aideen McLaughlin
