Actually, if I'm drinking, I like to give chachied out guys that are too good looking for their own good a hard time. Especially if they hit on me. Things like once I told some guy that he looks like he tries to hard and then I said, look at the amount of product in your hair for chrissakes... Just stuff like that.

I'm sorry about the long post. I found this on the net. I hope someone reads this, since it also talks about why most of us here on this forum are introverts. It may also help clarify the concept of extraversion-introversion a little.

Extraversion/Introversion

Extraversion/introversion is often thought of as being bipolar, but in reality it occurs along a continuum. People who fall at the extremes have clear preferences. Those who fall in the middle are called "ambiverts" and can function well in many different situations.
The definition of this personality trait is slightly different depending on which personality instrument is being used. Hans Eysenck believed that the autonomic nervous system determines how one reacts. When the activity of the cortex is inhibited by the brain stem, the person needs more stimulation and becomes extroverted. When the activity of the cortex is excited, there is too much stimulation and the person becomes introverted. Thus, introverts show stimulus aversion, and extraverts stimulus hunger.

Characteristics of Extraverts:
- Talk more and tend to take action with less reflection
- Work better in groups than alone
- Good at interpreting body language & facial expressions
- Excel during classes with high levels of activity
- Respond well to praise and competition
- Prefer quicker, less accurate approach
- Good at tasks involving short-term memory
- Highly resistant to distraction in interference conditions involving divided attention
- Prefer bright colors, loud music, and excitement
- Need a lot going on in the outer world

To know if a person is very extraverted, you don't need to encounter that person face to face! Extraverts have been found more likely to engage in "flaming" during computer-mediated communication. They are also more likely to use emoticons, the little smiley faces and other pictorial symbols used to express emotions and create a sense of social presence.

Characteristics of Introverts:
- Talk less and reflect more before acting
- Like to be quiet
- Better at reflective problem solving and tasks involving long-term memory
- Like to work independently or with one or two other people
- Prefer slower, more accurate approach
- May have trouble establishing rapport with others
- Oriented toward inner world of ideas and feelings
- Prefer low sensory input and low levels of activity
- Excel at focusing attention for long periods of time in situations if there are no distractions
- Have a lot going on in their inner world

The introvert may be at an advantage with asynchronous computer-mediated communication. One study asked college students to rate their communication style and give perceptions of CMC seminars held through asynchronous conferencing. The more extraverted the students were, the less likely they were to perceive CMC seminars as satisfying, as compared to face to face. The more students preferred to work individually, and the more self-conscious they were, the more they saw CMC as being stimulating and involving. Students who preferred working in groups had lower levels of CMC, as they missed the face-to-face interaction. The researcher concluded that introverted, quieter students benefit the most from CMC.

I guess I was getting at a distinction between intelligence and intellect. To be quick and dirty about it, intellect consists in ease of seeing the general principle in the particular examples, at least within a certain domain of thought or creativity. Some people who are obviously highly intelligent nonetheless rarely communicate in terms of general principles, whereas those usually termed "intellectual" will prefer to use abstract or general language, and will frequently use a specific as a point of departure for elucidation of the general forms manifest in the particular specific in question. Those who demonstrate the type of thought typically termed intellectual are more likely, by far, to be introverted.

he he. [that's what I say, right?]

Hey, I was wrong. But it does suggest a distinction of sorts, in that some introverts, used in the normal, social-interaction sense of the term, obviously extro-verse in writing and therefore also on the net.

I also should have noted that I consider it legit to use the term "intellectual" in at least two senses. The first is that suggestive of erudition in the arts and sciences, or in an art or a science. The academics, the ph.d.’s (though not all of them, and probably not even a majority of them). The second sense is much broader and, at least to me, more interesting. Many think, here invoking the Myers-Briggs personality system and others like it, that about a quarter of some populations are comfortable discoursing upon ideas. They think, and speak, in terms of principles whenever conditions permit, whereas most folks are more detail, or surface, oriented. Nothing wrong with that. In fact many of them are highly intelligent, and usually in a way that is astounding to those of us more likely to dance on the abstract plain, as it were.

Reminds me of a past discussion here of “genius”. There’s the definition whereby one could point, or try to point, to a few per century, or to a hundred. Or one could be referring to something like the top one or two percent of a population. Or one could be referring to anyone who generates something unique that resonates for a broad spectrum of other folks. This last refers to something like the second sense of intellectual sketched above. This in turn reminds me of a distinction, gained long ago in a descriptive astronomy class I attended, between stars and planets. Planets are seen via reflected light, but stars generate more energy then they receive. (I remember the prof saying that if Jupiter were about twenty times more massive it might have made a small star, but then that analysis is old, probably overcome by subsequent advances in physics.) By these lights (he he), most people (you know, the huddled masses, the scum) at best resemble cosmic debris such as asteroids or space dust, tumbling at the mercy of more massive influences. (OK, that last is included just to tweak KSR, Owen, and all the other fucking egalitarians.)

So, Tre, thanks for the reminder. You’ll always be a star to me.
