I posted this somewhere else, but then I realized a bunch of you might be interested too, and after all it was a suggestion from one of you fine folk that led me to it. I'll just be lazy and c&p though, 'cause that's just how I roll now.
"Looking for a Thrill"
I was recommended this dvd by an acquaintance, and I'm really grateful they mentioned it. Really unexpected stuff, from a ton of musicians and a few industry folks. I rented it from Netflix, but it's so good we're gonna buy it. Great idea, with surprisingly good editing. We've had to watch it in portions, it's so chock full of concentrated goodness. I can't recommend it highly enough, especially for musicians, artists, or fans of any of the musicians/labels involved. I don't know if I'm doing it any justice, but I had to pass it on. This thing is priceless.
A few standouts off the top of my head (too many but wtf) Mike Watt blew my mind, as did Ian Mackaye (Nugent?!? thank god for the Cramps), Vic Chestnutt was hilarious, the stories about Sun Ra! oh god I've forgotten them all! There is way too much to go into, but I'm convinced there's something in here for just about everybody.
***
"Looking for a Thrill is a collection of personal stories about defining musical moments of inspiration (a record, a show, a musician, etc) for 112 musicians who themselves have inspired so many. The interviews on the DVD include recollections by Mike Watt, Thurston Moore, Hamid Drake, Bjork, Yo La Tengo, Tortoise, the Butchies, Jon Spencer, Vic Chesnutt, Kurt Wagner, Fred Anderson, and Giant Sand - as well as members of the Urinals, Califone, Jesus Lizard, the Boredoms, Mekons, Slint, the Sea and Cake, and Calexico (just to name a few). Over five hours of inspiration in total!
Although all were asked one simple question - to tell a story about a musical moment that inspired - the responses are as varied as the people interviewed. The film is a great resource for all those interested in the independent musical mind. As a collection it reveals much about the moments that inspire so many to pick up a guitar or a microphone, to start a label or a band."

Huh, not really anything like Looking for a Thrill. looks more like a "old-school vs. new school" debate. Looks possibly interesting though, if it's not too much about that.
Homers, is amazon the only Uk-based dvd rental? That blows you can't find it.

No but it's the one that I am a member of.
Thanks for that Carl, I saw it mentioned in NME the other week, but I had forgotten about it.
I'll have to keep my eye out for a cheap copy of Looking For A Thrill.

Looks pretty cool.
I remember the first Thrill Jockey release I bought was "Nassau" by the Sea and Cake.
...actually I think that's the only Thrill Jockey release I own.

hehe you bet, ladies and johns. I just bought the dvd from Thrill Jockey's site last night. I imagine it's going to get watched many many times.
I wish I could tell a couple of stories from the thing to illustrate how great it is, but I just can't seem to do it justice. Maybe I'm just getting stupider.

Try telling Mike Watt's story. Not that I know what it is, but I know it would be a challenge to tell a story in the manner that he would, for there is nothing else quite like him in the universe.
P.S. - There's probably many people on this forum who are not Sublime fans, but I guarantee if you heard Mike Watt talking about them on the Sublime documentary, Stories, Tales, Lies and Exaggerations, you'd gain some respect for and/or interest in them simply because of the way Mr. Watt talks about his fascination with them and analyzes them.

You still can. But ask even less-well-known musicians kathryn's 12 non-Frank-related questions.
Have you ever read K Composite?
Oh, and seriously, thank you for the recommendation. You rock.

Looks like it's Taylor Guthrie. K Composite is generally about Louisville locals. http://www.kcomposite.com/about.html
Lots of field hockey players were interviewed in the first issues. No idea why. Perhaps it was an attraction to Catholic school girls. Or maybe Scott had a thing for field hockey players in particular.
