Rich Gilbert, vaunted guitarist for Frank Black and The Catholics and all-around-nice-guy, will be coming by to talk with FB.Net members today at 12 PM Forum Time. The Q&A session will be held here. Anyone is welcome to ask questions. You just have to be able to post on FB.Net.

You will be able to ask your questions directly to Rich, but with the stipulation that if there are quite a few pending questions for Rich already, that you hold back your question until he's answered them.

This thread will be unlocked shortly before noon (2 PM Central Time). See you then!

VERY IMPORTANT Please refersh no more than once every 30 seconds so that we don't cut off the server. If people do this, Rich should also have an easier time answering. Thank you!

Dear Mr. Gilbert

I've enjoyed your fine work since Human Sexual Response.

2 questions:

Who was your big musical influence growing up?

When will the mighty Catholics rise again?

Thanks for all you do,

From FBC:
most important of all, from me, please thank him [Rich Gilbert] for the signed cd. You know what I mean. (from April 7th Family Wash night), Thanks Rich G.!
what inspired him to play?
what were his influences growing up? (music to listen too and musicians)
was he a 'fan' of Charles' music before The Man came a'calling?
whose idea was it for the drumstick use for L.A? (not sure if Lyle used to do this)
does he have a solo or song he's most proud of (in terms of his own performance)?
what's his singing voice like - would he ever want to front a band?
any future plans to hook up with Dave and Scott? Miracle Legion?
does he realise his own talent?

Hey, nope, haven't heard it yet, I'm gonna have to bug Charles to send me a copy. I've met a few people here in Nashville who have played on it and they all seemed pretty enthusiastic about it.

Rich, thanks for taking time out to chat with us!! We're all honored!!

Just wondering, you are a very talented musician and you have played with lots of other talented musicians. What makes playing with the Catholics different form other bands you've worked with?

Ok I'm getting the hang of how this all works now. Ok then, well, I'm still planning on doing a guitar lessons and tricks and tips etc DVD but it's sitting idlely on the back burner at the moment. Juggling lots of things so some things get put aside temporarily. But I still plan on doing it. When it's done and ready I'll most likely have it posted at www.blackstonevalleysinners.com or my own web site, www.richgilbert.com, which I need to get going on. That's another thing that I should be dealing with that I've kind of let slide. Soon.

Rich,

1. What kinds of stuff do you guys do for fun when you're on tour but not "working"?

2. Of all the Catholics, who is the best ping pong player?

3. Is that player better than Frank at ping pong?

Well thanks, HSR was a great band to be involved with, everyone in the band was extremely creative and it was exciting to be in a band that didn't have much other precidents, in that there weren't too many other 4 lead singers backed by a power trio bands out there that we could borrow ideas from. Plus it was the beginning of a long cretaive relationship i was able to have with Larry Bangor and Malcolm Travis who ended up also playing in The Zulus. Chris MacLaughlin, the HSR bassist, was also in The Zulus for a while, but he wised up and became a lawyer.
Ok musical influences growing up. Nothing in particular, I was just fascinated with music since my earliest memeory. I Listened to the radio and so whatever was popular when i was growing up made some sort of impact on me I guess. I generally think that I'm more influeneced by what I don't like than what I like, in that it shows me what i don't want to do. I will say though that the music I probably loved the most growing up was 60's soul and R&B. I lived in Pittsbirgh then and they had some great all R&B radio stations, stations that played more than the standard top 40 hits.
As far as The Catholics, who knows. Everyone seems to be busy doing other things with their lives right now so there's nothing planned.

Did you read my review of your April 7th Family Wash Show with Joshua?
Tell me about the history of your “Sho-Bud” Pro I and your “Pack-a-Seat”?
There are some great pictures posted of you,and your “Sho-Bud” Pro I, and one catalogue picture of just the “Sho-Bud” here at FB.net "Rich Gilbert Show Review, Chat and Photos".
Is there a formal or informal name for the pre-song and post-song (not really part of the song, just warm-up or cool-down?) guitar licks and chords that are left on the final recordings of some of FB&TheC’s songs such as the beginning of “Down in the Hole” and the end of “Take What You Want”?

Holy Toledo, that's a lot of queries. Ok here we go, I was inspired to play because I've loved music to the exclusion of just about any thing else since I was a wee little baby.

Well I knew both Charles and The Pixies when they 1st started playing around Boston so I was both a fan and a friend from back then.

Drumstcik, it just seemed like the right thing to do. I don't know if Lyle did it, i never saw Lyle perform with Charles. But I've used the drumstick before I started playing with The Catholics also.

Solo or song most proud of? Hmmmm hard to say, I think what I played on the Uncle Tuepelo song Whsikey Bottle fit the song nicely. There's definitely some Zulus recordings that were pretty much unreleased or only played on radio in Boston that I'm very happy with. I can't say I'm disappointed with with most of the stuff I've done, you do it and sometimes it works out better than other times. I am disappointed with the offiical Zulus LP that was released on Slash, it really didn't come close to capturing the band. That's probably the biggest disapponitment. I wish we had more time and $ when we recorded the Concussion Ensemble record, it also doesn't really capture how great the band really was. I'm very happy with the way both Blackstone valley Sinners CDs came out. But basically i do my work and then keep moving on. Time will show what stands and what falls.

Singing voice, plain, nothing to lead a song with. I'm ok with harmonies and background but no one really would want to hear me as the main voice. You're born with it or you're not. I'm not.
No plans to hook up with Scott and Dave, but mostly because I live in Nashville now and they're in Rhode Island. But you never know.

No I don't realize my own talent, I'm my biggest critic. Or at least the only one I pay attention to.

Well Charles is a tremendous and singular songwirter, so there's that, you're working with great material. Plus Charles pretty much gives his musicians free reign to add what they do to the material. So I felt like I pretty much had as much freedom to do what i thought worked as if it was my own band. And then of course, The Catholics played together a lot over the 6 years or so I was involved, so we built up a great musical chemistry especially live which made every night special and unique. But that's not to say other groups I've worked with didn't have chemisty or something special, they all did, it's just every relationship is different you know? Being in a band is very much like being in a relationship. Kind of like being in a family and a relationship at the same time. It's weird.

Well I can't speak for the others but I like to check out the towns where we are, hit the streets, see the buildings, go to restauants, clubs, bars etc.
Scott is probably the best ping pong player. Ruthless.

Yep I saw it and read it thanks. I got the Sho Bud in Canada after all of the Catholics stuff was ripped off in Philadelphia. I got the seat at the same time, you need to have a pack a seat if you play pedal steel, it's just the way it is. Otherwise you're not a pedal steel player. The Sho Bud is from the mid 70's, a great era for Sho Buds, they look and work and sound great.
No nobody has come up with a name for the bofoor and after song stuff. Does it need it?

Can't say I have a favorite, they all pretty much had the same balance of fun and frustration. Mostly fun, but recording can also be troublesome, expecially when the song just ain't coming together. I mean though, you're in the studio working with really good musicians on really good songs. How bad can it be? But I can't listen to the records with a lot of objectivity so i can't pick out a favorite. As I said earlier, it's more important to do the work and move on. Just keep moving.

Don't really drink soda anymore. Loved Mountain Dew as a kid, I found out later it had the most caffeine.
Sandwich- you can always depend on a good turkey and swiss.
Don't have a favorite guitar, just lots of ones that I love.
Place on earth, no one favorite but I'm a urban kind of guy- NYC PARIS ROME BARCELONA LONDON LA SAN FRAN CHICAGO TORONTO AMSTERDAM ETC

No one time but funniest is usually after the shows on the bus hanging with Ben M. (monitors and engineer for BLD, DW, SMYT) and Matt Yelton (Front of house sound man) and various Catholics just drinking and laughing. You had to be there stuff.

Can't say I have one, but I've never really been a favorite kind of guy. Saw Calexico a couple of weeks ago and there were fantastic. There's also a great band here in nashville called The Black Diamond Heavies that I just saw and really liked. Seems like there's always something interesting around, you just have to look a bit sometimes.
