http://www.zyworld.com/cameraman/JoyDivision.htm
for any joy division fans, these are some gorgeous pictures...
sadly with the copyright thing all over them which I guess is understandable if he's selling them but you get the idea....
Previously unseen photographs of a seminal JOY DIVISION gig are being exhibited, to mark the 25th anniversary of singer IAN CURTIS’ death.
The pictures were taken at a seminal early show at Bowdon Vale Youth Club in South Manchester in 1979, and are now being exhibited now at Hale Library, the nearest available venue to the youth club, now a post office.
The gig took place three months before the release of the band’s ‘Unknown Pleasures’ album, in front of just 150 teenagers.
Photographer Martin O’Neill was an eager 18-year-old when the shots were taken. He says now: “Frankly I can’t remember too much, just being told to ‘fuck off’ by Peter Hook when I climbed on the stage and then being scared to death when Ian Curtis started dancing. Beyond that the only other thing I remember was thinking Stephen Morris is a really good drummer.
“It’ll be interesting to see how many people claimed to be there on the night though. I’d really like to meet other people who genuinely were there, but this could end up a bit like the Sex Pistols at the Free Trade Hall which everyone seems to claim to have witnessed.”

I know, I was thinking when I looked at the pictures that BLT's pictures were just as good if not better than these ones.
This guy is asking for a hefty wedge

Those are pretty cool pictures. Makes you kind of wonder if new bands will come up with their own image anytime soon.

Where does the name Joy Division come from? sounds kindof Orwellian.

It was the nickname for the prostitution wing of Nazi concentration camps, which is pleasant. The band changed their name to that from Warsaw, incidentally.

Ian Curtis was the greatest dancing frontman! Stand aside Mick Jagger and Jello Biafra!! |

Homers, that's near you. Were you there that night?
Thanks for a great thread, kittie. Love will tear us apart again.

I was there, my mum took me to see them. Bowden Yale Youth Club eh? Now there's some memories. Actually I remember nothing.

Peter Hook & The Light stopped in town and played Unknown Pleasures, much of Closer and other songs. sadly i couldn't go, but from the clips i've heard he and the band do a very decent performance.
when i first heard the idea, i wasn't too keen obviously. but then the music was and is outstanding and that's prolly a good enough reason that people will want to hear it live again.
they have a second bass on stage (his son Jack), which seems awkward, but it seems Hook wants to focus on doing the vocals close to expectation, though he admittedly prefers just the bassist role, like here, relieved by Rowetta, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiG1cUVVLGg |
