Iīm going to see this feller in a couple weeks in a little town outside Barcelona, the tour is called El Mar Cura Todo En Europa Too (the sea cures all in europe too). I havenīt heard anything of him since he guested on Porno For Pyros last album so Iīm quite excited about it, me.

| Newo, same here! I'm thinking about going to see Mike Watt this Wednesday, but I'm not really sure about it yet since I know practically nothing about him. I said this before, but what do you people think, is it worth it? |

In the past twenty-some years I've probably seen Mike Watt play about 30 times in various bands (mostly the Minutemen and Firehose). He's a great guy and a one of the finest bassists you'll ever see.

| I just got back from the show and I cannot believe how amazing it was! I swear to god, each song was better than the last. Man oh man, how great it was! Why did it have to end so soon? I miss them already

They're all good. I think most people regard Double Nickels as their pinnacle, though I most love the early stuff when the songs actually were one minute each and Watt still played with a pick.

The most memorable time I saw the Minutemen was when the Cathay de Grande closed in Hollywood in '84. They must have played 50 songs. I sat on a folding chair three feet in front of Watt with my feet on the 8 inch stage. The show ended around 2am. As we filed up the steps to leave, there was George Hurley standing between the two flights of stairs shaking hands, thanking us all for coming.

that was one of the best shows Iīve ever seen. Turned out we had to get a train then a cab to a warehouse in the middle of Catalan nowhere, Mike didnīt come on until 2am after two dreadful local support acts but I forgot about them after about four bars of his music. He said he wanted to play a long weird song and played for an hour, left the stage for five minutes, came back on and said īTold you it was a weird songī and said we had really open hearts and minds for letting him try it out. The locals went pretty much apeshit (usually the only people crowdsurfing are voluntary ones but there were guys walking around, picking up people and tossing them onto the crowd) and the drummer was swinging. He played The Red And The Black, then a couple more and ended the show asking everyone to start their own band or write a book then screamed John Coltraneīs name a few times. I talked to him afterwards and gave him a Beckett book cause heīs on his way to Ireland. I felt like Elevator Lady said she did upon leaving and it only took us five minutes to hitchike back to Bcn in a van with some Catalan punks and their huge dog drooling on me. what a wonderful guy.

I used to help some friends do a fanzine called Ink Disease and we went to George's house in Pedro to interview Firehose. The live shots are from Raji's and the Variety Arts Center.
I went to shitloads of shows back in those days but only took my camera to a fraction of them. There was always the decision-making process: "How much beer do I plan on drinking tonight? Hmmm...better not risk taking the camera."
But I stand by my choices.

Ok, basicly based on all these rave reports over here, and very well aware of his cult status (that minutemen double album is - or was - high on my list for a next purchase), I went to see him two days ago.
And I didn't like it very much, I'm afraid. I did enjoy an awesome cover version of "it's alright ma, I'm only bleeding", but I guess mainly because it was sung by the organ player. Mike Watt's vocals are an acquired taste, to use an understatement. He may be a great bass player, and his ethics may be cool, but that didn't make me enjoy his music any more. Well, I guess it's just not really my kind of music, I don't like stuff like Victims Family and Primus either.

In my defense, he did have the burden to play after the great Karate, so that would have been though to beat anyway. Most people left after Karate, and the crowd shrank more and more as Mike Watt's gig went on, which not really helped in creating a vibe along the lines of "this is the greatest concert experiance ever".
I'll give him another chance anyway. After all, I also grew to like the Evil Superstars. |
