Gil Norton wanted Kim to sing this one but Charles wouldn't let her to. And Gil was pissed of.
The theme is about the Olympus Mons of Mars, the higher mountain on the system (20 000 meters). That's what the song is about. |

Or maybe it was a warning for Anakin Skywalker to not fight Obi Wan near a volcano on the Mustaphar planet...
Seriously, the main theme of the last album was Sci-Fi and Bird Dream was an illustration. I just know that it was written on reference to the highest mountain. And Kim should sing it. |

I guess you didn't catch the reference. There's an episode of Futurama where Leela and Fry are on Mars, and Leela points out Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system, which is directly in front of them. Fry then says, "Where?" Kind of a dumb joke, but I thought it fit the thread.

Why would Gil want Kim to sing it? It's one of Frank's best vocal performances. Although I wouldn't mind hearing a Kim version of the song, as a b-side or something...

When I was a little kid, there was this great Sci-Fi flick they would show on Saturday afternoons called Robinson Crusoe on Mars about an astronaut who crash lands on the red planet and has many adventures. I always flash to that movie when I hear this song.

And for my money, Frank's voice makes the song. Sorry, Kim, you want to sing a song, write it!

Yeah, I remember that! Is'nt there a monkey in it, and he finds these kind of seaweed pod things to eat? I can't really remember it properly, but that's a nostalgic blast from the past!!

Yep. Robinson C. crash lands on the Red Planet (Bird Dream?) and he and his monkey (Monkey Gone To Heaven?) hang out with a wacky alien indian guy (The Navajo Know?) who has escaped from his evil Martian slave masters. Every so often these cheesey ships fly overhead (Manta Ray?) and try to get our heroes. Adam West has a small guest appearance at the beginning as Robinson's co-pilot who dies after impact.

I think Kim Deal would sound great on this song, but in comparison to Frank's singing, she would completely and totally ruin everything. I'm forever grateful Frank is singing it and not Kim. It's a beautiful song as it is, but it's the vocals that make all the difference, IMO. |
