It's interesting, I think.
I'm having to write a research proposal at the moment on cannaboid receptors and chondrocytes and with all of these assignments there's a ton of background reading involved. There's not a lot of specific work done in this particular area (else why write a research proposal eh?) but the one paper on it suggests that cannabis can help alleviate inflammation and chronic pain so could have a valid role, specifically in this case, arthritis treatment.
There's better known examples of disease where people have felt benefits of cannabis use (MS, IBS, cancer) and believe in this to the extent that they have risked trouble with the law.
So whilst recreational cannabis is generally frowned on would medicinal use be ok? Or should it be ok all round? Or is it a case of...

It should be okay all around.
Its hypocritical that liquor is legal and pot is not. I mean pot's not flipping amphetimines or something ya know.
I know that if people are sick, pot is awesome for increasing appetite :)

I don't think any drugs should be illegal, period. Regulated, yes--illegal, no. So, yes, I do most certainly believe marijuana should be allowed for medical use, as well as any other substances that would benefit people suffering from illnesses. But I think most of the [non-sick] people that argue for medical marijuana are full of shit and really coudn't care less if it's used for medical purposes but just want it for themselves.

what carolynanna said. the line between legal and illegal is drawn by stupid pseudo moralists that think they can judge what substance is good or bad for you. scientifically talking cannabis can be helpful to releive pain and stimulate appetite among other things and as a recreational drug is almost harmless if used occasionally or in small doses. like wine for the rest. the key is moderation and non prohibitionism. a law can't teach you responsability so whatever drugs you declare illegal there will always be a junkie of some kind.

Makes no sense to me that one can go home and have a scotch after work, but not a toke.
Drink too much and you're a babbling idiot who might become pugnacious, smoke too much grass and you'll probably just be chillin with a bag of chips and a remote control.

I agree with Carolynanna, if liquor is legal so should pot be.
Canabis works well in the management of post operative/ post chemo nausea. I had a good article on that when I was studying for my final exams, that was four years ago and something better must've been published since. Tre, you should search the British Journal of Anaesthesia database, I'm certain you will find good articles there (at the least many references)

I have never seen two people on pot get in a fight because it is fucking IMPOSSIBLE. "Hey, buddy!" "Hey, what?" "Ummmmmmm...." End of argument. - bill hicks
but what about those people who make a habit of it, I know cannabis isn't supposed to be addictive but it is habit forming, there is a guy I know who used to come stay with me a lot and a couple of times after a night of drinking we'd stumble into my flat and after a few minutes he'd be out the door to go buy some pot because he said "I can not get to sleep without it" this guy would drive drunk (i did try hiding his keys it wasn't pretty) to go buy pot because he was convinced he needed it. A good number of people I know who have this daily habit seem to have lost the will to do anything, this isn't a generalisation because I know an equal number who are fine with the recreational smoke, but do you think cannabis as a daily habit results in general lack of motivation in the same way alcohilism works? or should this not matter and the actions of those who are weak of will not spoil the fun for everyone else?....
They lie about marijuana. Tell you pot-smoking makes you unmotivated. Lie! When you're high, you can do everything you normally do, just as well. You just realize that it's not worth the fucking effort. There is a difference - bill hicks

I used to buy excellent weed from a MS sufferer.
But that doesn't really help you does it Kitten. My great grandmother did used to drink cannabis tea to alleviate her arthritis though, or that's what she said in any case. Apparently it was some kind of old wives treatment or something like that.

hehe I'm not sloughing for study material, I just thought it was an interesting subject, although if I do get any study material out of this I might start a thread on emphysema, oh and matrix metalloproteinases and mutations and developmental disease, and epigenetics, and stem cells and....
hehe, it's friggin endless
I was just interested in the area in general, I personally can't smoke it I'm quite sensitive and it makes me oogy so I don't touch the stuff but I'm a believer in legalisation and appropriate legislation, think of the tax revenue!
(sorry, forgot to add, thanks for the heads up, I've read a bit on post chemo uses and general analgesic and anti-emetic properties with all this work done on it I'm actually surprised it hasn't been legalised yet.)

offerw, this isn't as legit as a medical journal, but I can vouch that marijuana has many beneficial effects. Thought it was illegal to do so, I got pot for someone I love so she could smoke as she was dying of cancer. The only time she'd eat anything was after she smoked. It also helped her sleep, which was another major issue.
Yes, the illegal status of pot is hypocritical and it reflects the facts that a) there are no lobbyists for cannabis-growers' unions, the way there are for tobacco-growers and alcohol-makers and b) the government isn't smart enough to realize that they could tax the hell off of the stuff.
This topic pisses me off.
But it also reminds me of a dream I had last night (which I suppose belongs in the dreams thread):
I am on a bus and Frank's on the seat in front of mine and he leans over and offers me a joint and I take a big big toke and I get very high.

In Oregon pot is legal for medicinal purposes. I have known several HIV positive folks who had medical marijuana cards so they could grow and use it.
Another bit of interesting pot trivia is that (please forgive my piece meal memory on the history), one of the driving forces for it being made illegal is that hemp was going to threaten the paper market in the US. So a campaign was started to discredit marijuana. This is how we got that horribly inaccurate propaganda movie "Reefer Madness" Strangely enough many of the myths of pot formed by that movie exist today. |

Yeah, the morality laws prohibiting conduct that hurts no one, e.g., controlled substances, sexual behavior,...is a step down that slippery slope leading to the Tyranny of the Majority!!!
Hey Kathryn, were The Catholics on the same bus heading toward the next stop on their, dare I say, Reunion Tour with Frank?

It's digraceful that it's not genereally legalised for medicinal purposes. Of course, there's probably great concern among anti-drugs groups that this could be abused. But if it's proven to help certain ailments-or even releave the pain of chronic conditions, then there should be an exception made. |

this is absolutely true. people who use it in a daily basis act exactly as your friend and i have more than one examples myself. as always the truth is in the middle. cannabis isn't as innocent as many pro-cannabis groups claim (specially when they say stupid things like you can drive safely when you are high) but on the other hand no substance is innocent if abused.

There is no doubt that many people get fucked up on it if they use it too much, but like mun chien says, that's the same with all drugs. Everything in moderation.

In my lovely country the government pays the cannabis bills for you if you use it to help alleviate inflammation and chronic pain...

I'm definitely in favor of marijuana for medicinal use.
I'm pretty much in favor of legalization of pot for recreational use. I still wouldn't smoke it, but I don't smoke regular cigarettes either. I'm still a bit undecided on this one, though.
For harder drugs, I guess I'm more for decriminalization, which is to say that I don't think you should be able to buy cocaine at the 7-11, but you shouldn't be thrown in jail for using it, either.
On a personal level, I don't use drugs, and the idea that other people do sometimes makes me uncomfortable. Call it a result of my sheltered upbringing. I don't know. Nonetheless, I think a lot of the drug laws governments try to institute are stupid, and a waste of resources. That whole "drug war" thing was just one big joke, and an expensive joke at that.

Drug-dealing gran to be sentenced Patricia Tabram baked biscuits and soups with cannabis A 66-year-old Northumberland gran is to be sentenced for drug dealing. Patricia Tabram, 66, earlier pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis with intent to supply from her home in East Lea, Humshaugh, near Hexham.
The former chef, who will appear at Newcastle Crown Court, baked cookies, soups and casseroles laced with the illegal herb for herself and friends.
She said the drug helped combat intense pain in her neck and back, as well as other complaints such as tinnitus.
Tabram was arrested after police seized 31 cannabis plants growing in her loft and another one from her hallway table.
Drug dealing
Northumbria Police were tipped off about the savoury smells and activities coming from Mrs Tabram's bungalow and twice raided her house last May and June.
Tabram said: "I had a walking stick, I was in constant pain. Now, through ingesting cannabis in my food five times a day, five times a week - minute amounts - I feel great."
She is writing a book about her experiences called Grandma Eats Cannabis, which she hopes to be in print soon.
Tabram said she had been travelling to the Byker district of Newcastle regularly to buy cannabis.
When her friends said they also wanted some of the Class C drug she met a dealer in Hexham and a day after taking delivery of the cannabis police raided her home.

The driving while high thing is interesting. I know a few people who regularly drive after a toke or three, and find that they generally drive a bit slower and more carefully than when sober. And I have a couple of friends who are convinced that they need a spliff before bedtime, which is probably just because they've conditioned themselves to think that way as it's become such a habit. Personally I think smoking anything late (illegal or not) just keeps you awake longer. I agree that it should be legalised too. Might get a decent bit of greenery for a change. And all those other proper reasons. |

Definately in favor of cannibis for medicinal use. Minnesota has been discussing it. If you ask me I bet it might have a decent chance of passing. |
