Any excuse! This time round, I'm looking for just particular parts of songs (so not whole lyrics sheets), and you should also say why you're choosing that particular stanza. So: a couple of my choices.

"Lately in the hospitals, the halfway homes, the choking jails,
There's people on the mend again, with hope to carry on again,
It makes me feel that something's right, for everyone who tries to fight,
No politics or dirty tricks, more standing up and shouting out.

Come on people, keep your friends close, your enemies won't matter any more."
Hope Of The States - 'Enemies/Friends'

This struck me when I heard it for the first time, at some point last year. It's remarkably positive, at a time when the overwhelming majority of music concentrates on the negative side of things. Really, have a look through and its amazing. I particularly like 'keep your friends close, your enemies won't matter any more', its not an exhortation to fight or bemoaning your problems, its an optimistic and really impressive and heartfelt sentiment.

"And if a double-decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side, what a heavenly way to die. And if a ten-ton truck kills the both of us, to die by your side, the pleasure, the privilege is mine."
The Smiths - "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"

This is one of the most perversely romantic expressions I've come across, and not nearly as arch or sarcastic as Le Moz can be. Interesting fact: in medieval times, to die was a euphemism for orgasm, which probably isn't of any relevance here but cements the connection between love and death that's explored elsewhere. As I said though, this is a beautiful and romantic thought, unusually expressed but very evocative.

I'm like a lost snail in the night.

I really love this one line.

"Wait, they don't love you like I love you".

Such a simple line, but when you hear why it was written, I just think it's extremely beautiful. Karen O wrote it after seeing her rock star boyfriend looking at maps for his upcoming tour. She was sad to see him going away again (I think the fact that they were always on seperate tours is why they hardly ever saw each other and eventually split up) and just wanted to let him know before he went that his fans didn't love him like she did. Simple, but very beautiful.

You asked for nothing / That's what I gave you
Ash for ashes / Dust for dust
Your trust is touching / But misguided
Bride, I'll be yours / For one night
I wonder really what you saw in me
(Not your type at all)
And all the angels / Hold their breath / As my eyes rest
Upon the pretty girl / Who leads the choir
Cry out their disgust for me
They're crying for my bride
This (mouse?) in white / Does not suspect / My next move in the game
A game will honor you / And cherish you / A game
Share my worldly goods / A game
'Til death when we're parted / Only words don't mean a thing
Think of ways to run / The sun paints patterns / On the stained-glass windows
Widows in their sunday best / Reflect about when they too / Were brides
Can hide their feeling / Stealing seconds from an age
They'll never see again
A game / With this ring / I pledge myself
A game / I do / I do!
Why do we have to be so humble / Mumble words / We never mean
It's obscene / The ultimate obscenity
Serenity on sundays / The stars on sundays
Smiles on straight / And maybe one day / The rewards will be there
For us / Just for us
In heaven / Just for us
Amen

"The Wedding" - Legendary Pink Dots

I don't have a printout of the actual lyrics. That's what I hear. Already broke the stanza rule.

-

Listened to this for the first time in ages a few days back. Stirred feelings I'd forgotten.

Made me remember more-or-less how I felt as an 18-year-old husband and soon-to-be father.

Uncertain if our relationship were strong enough to sustain a marriage. Uncertain how I would provide for my family. Scared witless at the thought of being a father. Somehow seeing myself as a corrupting influence on her. A failure.

-

5 years later and all is well.

Take a bite of the chocolate coffin.

Kiss me, please kiss me
But kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation

Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye

For a long time I was in love with someone who I thought loved me back but always made me feel like second prize, never really good enough and he kept his hold on me for years, made me feel like a reserve and I accepted it. So, a lyric about kisses lacking in desire tended to make me quite weepy, especially the way Buckley sings it. Up until fairly recently this song was certain to make me sob. But still, post getting over it, it's still a lovely song.

love like you've never been burnt
work like you don't need the money
dance like there's nobody watching
kiss like your tongue is on fire
suck like you don't need the money
sin like there's nobody judging

the frank sonata - the longpigs

just because.
it's not even a great song, but just because...

I like the peace
in the backseat,
I don't have to drive,
I don't have to speak,
I can watch the country side,
and I can fall asleep.

My family tree's
loosing all it's leaves,
crashing towards the driver's seat,
the lightning bolt made enough heat
to melt the street beneath your feet.

Alice died
in the night,
I've been learning to drive.
My whole life,
I've been learning.

I like the peace
in the backseat,
I don't have to drive,
I don't have to speak,
I can watch the country side

I love this Arcade Fire lyric, made me cry the first time I've listen, and I can't listen to it many times, because I have to hold my tears. I think it's because I can see a part of my life in it.

Sometimes I think I like the lyrics but I find its more the delivery of those lyrics. Like Thom Yorke could sing about anything and it would give me shivers.

I like lyrics that don't seem to make sense at first like;

"She could steal but she could not rob."
She Came in Through the Bathroom Window - The Beatles.
At first glance you might ask what is the difference.

"Something in my veins, bloodier than blood."
Shot in the Arm - Wilco (Just for floop!)
What exactly is bloodier than blood?

*falls asleep to the quiet murmuring of tre and HPM bickering...*

"I forgot all my songs
The words now are wrong
And I burned my guitar in a rage

But the fire came to rest
In your white velvet breast
So somehow I just know that it's safe"

Low - Death Of A Salesman

I could've put the entire song here. It's basically a very poignant and simple story of giving up your dreams and aspirations because of what everybody else has told you, and the bulk of the song is immensely sad. These last two verses describe the protagonist's ultimate frustration and then a dawning realisation that the situation isn't as bad as he thinks. I recommend listening to the whole song really, but I like these lines - they come as a real relief from an almost oppressive sadness.

This one is a classic, but it breaks my heart everytime I listen

When the routine bites hard
and ambitions are low
And the resentment rides high
but emotions won't grow
And we're changing our ways,
taking different roads
Then love, love will tear us apart
again

I know you said parts of lyrics but this whole song is lyrically poetic, I love it, its like my number 12 favourite song of all time. Dear God by XTC.

Dear god hope you got the letter, and...
I pray you can make it better down here.
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
but all the people that you made in your image, see
them starving on their feet 'cause they don't get
enough to eat from God, I can't believe in you

Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but... I feel that I should be heard
loud and clear. We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
and all the people that you made in your image, see them fighting
in the street 'cause they can't make opinions meet about God,
I can't believe in you

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue? Did you make
mankind after we made you? And the devil too!

, don't know if you noticed, but... your name is on
a lot of quotes in this book, and us crazy humans wrote it, you
should take a look, and all the people that you made in your
image still believing that junk is true. Well I know it ain't, and
so do you, dear God, I can't believe in I don't believe in

I won't believe in heaven and hell. No saints, no sinners, no
devil as well. No pearly gates, no thorny crown. You're always
letting us humans down. The wars you bring, the babes you
drown. Those lost at sea and never found, and it's the same the
whole world 'round. The hurt I see helps to compound that
Father, Son and Holy Ghost is just somebody's unholy hoax,
and if you're up there you'd perceive that my heart's here upon
my sleeve. If there's one thing I don't believe in

it's you....

------------------------
“I want to be a star!” I cried
They said, “You’re overqualified.
Why don’t you learn to tune your damn guitar?”

I also love this one, sorry!

The blood in my veins and the wind in my lungs
And I am breathless without you
Still your hands
And still your heart
For still your face comes shining through
And all the morning glows anew
Still your soul
Still your mind
Still, the fire of love is true
And I am breathless without you

I'm not a fan of Blur, but I love this lyrics, they keep going through my mind...

Where’s the love song to set us free
Too many people down, everything turning the wrong way round

And I don’t know what love will be
But if we stop dreaming now, lord know we’ll never clear the clouds

And you’ve been so busy lately
That you haven’t found the time
To open up your mind

And watch the world spinning gently out of time

Feel the sunshine on your face
It’s in a computer now
Gone are the future (? ) way out in space

I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
you were famous, your heart was a legend.
You told me again you preferred handsome men
but for me you would make an exception.
And clenching your fist for the ones like us
who are oppressed by the figures of beauty,
you fixed yourself, you said, "Well never mind,
we are ugly but we have the music."

First Leonard Cohen song I ever heard.

With all this talk of crushes and stuff, I like this one:

I don't know what other people see
or what they think is love
But I know what it means to me
I fall in love so easily
And it's hard to let your guard down
Something you never wanted to
But I gave you my love and if you turned away
I guess I'd be screwed, but...

I'm a hopeless romantic
You're just hopeless

The Bouncing Souls - 'Hopeless Romantic'

OK, throwaway pop-punk it may be, but if you like your rock'n'roll to barrel along with tons of energy yet retain a heartfelt and romantic side (and you've missed the Killers), Bouncing Souls should do the trick. Everybody's a bit of a hopeless romantic at heart, I should think, I know I am. As long as neither Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock are involved I'm just as happy to watch a romance as an action film, and I prefer sappy songs over angry songs. What can I say?

If you didn't like both then you'd be a bit boring to be honest with you. That's why I said in the sex thread that I don't like men and women who conform to all the male and female stereotypes. They are the most boring people to know.

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong, no one can tell us we’re wrong
Searchin’ our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

You’re beggin’ me to go, you’re makin’ me stay
Why do you hurt me so bad?
It would help me to know
Do I stand in your way, or am I the best thing you’ve had?
Believe me, believe me, I can’t tell you why
But I’m trapped by your love, and I’m chained to your side

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we’re wrong
Searchin’ our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

We’re losing control
Will you turn me away or touch me deep inside?
And before this gets old, will it still feel the same?
There’s no way this will die
But if we get much closer, I could lose control
And if your heart surrenders, you’ll need me to hold

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we’re wrong
Searchin’ our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

The countryside is overgrown
There's a lighthouse in her soul
Wrestling with butcher girls
She don't ever change her clothes
Masterpieces liquidate in fertile tears
I could sleep inside her bones
A hundred years
Lizards in the pressure zone
Mother knows it's only a phase

Cherry gardens feel like ice
Hazard lights from her past
Underneath the broken bridge
Hookers hug illegal dads
Masterpieces liquidate in fertile tears
I could sleep inside her bones
A hundred years

Danger in shape of something wild
stranger dressed in black
she's a hungry child

No one knows who she is
or what name is
I don't know where she came from
or what her game is

Hot child in the city
hot child in the city
running wild and looking pretty
hot child in the city

so young to be loose and on her own
young boys, they all want to take her home
she goes downtown and the boys all stop and stair
when she goes downtown she walks like she just don't care

Hot child in the city
hot child in the city
running wild and looking pretty
hot child in the city

Come on down to my place baby
we'll talk about love
come on down to my place woman
we'll make love

Hot child in the city
hot child in the city
she'd kinda dangerous
hot child in the city
young child
running wld and looking pretty
young child, running wild
hot child in the city(x3)

Ecoute les orgues
Elles jouent pour toi
Il est terrible cet air là
J'espère que tu aimes
C'est assez beau non
C'est le requiem pour un con

Je l'ai composé spécialement pour toi
A ta mémoire de scélérat
C'est un joli thème
Tu ne trouves pas
Semblable à toi même
Pauvre con

Voici les orgues
Qui remettent ça
Faut qu't'apprennes par coeur cet air là
Que tu n'aies pas même
Une hésitation
Sur le requiem pour un con

Quoi tu me regardes
Tu n'apprécies pas
Mais qu'est-ce qu'y a là dedans
Qui t'plaît pas
Pour moi c'est idem
Que ça t'plaise ou non
J'te l'rejoue quand même
Pauvre con

Ecoute les orgues
Elles jouent pour toi
Il est terrible cet air là
J'espère que tu aimes
C'est assez beau non
C'est le requiem pour un con

Je l'ai composé spécialement pour toi
A ta mémoire de scélérat
Sur ta figure blême
Aux murs des prisons
J'inscrirai moi-même : " Pauvre con "

Sergee Gainsbourg, so hot right now!!!

He really was the Big French Thing wasn't he. He still is.

In our poor country ruled by Badtasty-Massonic loby, every single french-variété chanteur tries to non-sing like him... Pathetic. Makes me want to collaborate again. taht's what i do, I listen to Anglo-saxon music.

I love this song by Ben Lee called Into the Dark:

I'm feeling better
since I surrendered
you can't climb till youre ready to fall

you're not a landmine
you're not a goldmine
no, you're not mine at all

so tell me baby
can you hear me?
I sent a message out into the dark
it's a mystery
when you're near me
I've gotta find my way to your heart

I learned my lesson
first impressions
are more often right than wrong

its not a slow dance
this modern romance
feels like we've already waiting too long

Udy, udy, udy, udy etc...

I never used to cry 'cause I was all alone
For me, myself and I is all I've ever known
I never felt the need to have a hand to hold
In everything I do I take complete control
That's where I'm coming from
My Lucky Number's one

I've everthing I need to keep me satisfied
There's nothing you can do to make me change my mind
I'm having so much fun
My Lucky Number's one
Ah! Oh! Ah! Oh!

Ay ay ay ay ay...
I now detect an alien vibration here
There's something in the air besides the atmosphere
The object of the action is becoming clear
An imminent attack upon my heart I fear
The evidence is strong
My Lucky Number's rung
Ah! Oh! Ah! Oh!

Something tells me my Lucky Number's gonna be changing soon
Something tells me Lucky Number's gonna be oweoweoweoweoweowe...

You certainly do have a strange effect on me
I never thought that I could feel the way I feel
There's something in your eyes gives me a wild idea
I never want to be apart from you my dear
I guess it must be true
My Lucky Number's two

This rearrangement suits me now I must confess
The number one was dull and number two is best
I wanna stay with you
My Lucky Number's two
Ah! Oh! Ah! Oh!

"Yes this is Miss Renee King from Philadelphia. I want you to please
give me a call on area code 215 222 4209 and I'm calling in reference
to the music business. Thank you."
DOVE:
Hey how ya doin'
Sorry ya can't get through
Why don't you leave your name
And your number
And I'll get back to you
Hey how are ya doin'
Sorry ya can't get through
But leave your name (uh)
And your number
And I'll get back to you.
Once again it's another rap bandit
Fiending at I and I can't stand it
Wanna be down with the Day-Glo
Knocking on my door, saying, "a yo yo"
Knocking on my door, saying, "a yo yo"
"I got a funky new tune with a fly banjo"
I can't understand what the problem is
I find it hard enough dealing with my own biz
How'd they get my name and number
Then I stop to think and wonder
Bout a plan, yo man, I gotta step out town
You wanna call me up? Take my number down
It's 222-2222
I got an answering machine that can talk to you
It goes
POS:
Hey how ya doin'
Sorry ya can't get through
But leave your name and your number
And I'll get back to you
Yo, check it, exit the old style
Enters the new
But nothing's new 'bout being hawked by a crew
Or should I say flock cause around every block
There's Harry, Dick, and Tom, with a demo in his palm
Now I'm with helping those who want to help themselves
And flaunt a nut that's doggy as in dope
But it's not the mood to hear
The tales of limousines and pails
Of money they'll make like a pro
I be like, "Yo black, just play me the tape"
But at the show the time to spare I just make
But the songs created in they shacks
Are so wick-wick-wack, situations like this
And now I hate they give me smiles Kool-Aid wide and ask,
"Was it def?"
And with the straighest face I be like, "Hell yes."
I slip them the digits to Papa Prince Paul
So I don't go AWOL but yet I know when they call
They get
MASE:
Hey how ya doing
Sorry ya can't get through
Why don't you leave your name
And your number
And I'll get back to you
Hey how are ya doin
Sorry you can't get through
Why don't you leave your name and your number
And I'll get back to you
Check it out
Party at the dug-out on Diction Ave
Haven't been to the jam in quite a while
Figure I'll catch up on the latest styles
'Stead piles and piles of demo tapes bi-da miles
All I wanna do is cut on the decks wild
But edition up here bi-da miles to the center
Reliever of duty, Plug One mosies in
And I be like, "Yo G, Pos does all the producing"
POS:
Now woe is me to the third degree
Mase pulls the funny so I make like a bunny
Jettin'
But I'm getting used to this demo abuse
Getting raped and giving birth to a tape
Cause there's no escape from the clutches of a hawker
Attached to my success, sent like a stalker
Make way to my radius playin fly guy
Try to get on my back they force like Luke Sky
Me Myself and I go through this act daily
And rarely do I not
No matter how I dodge some jackal always nails me
No matter what the plot
And even out on tour they be like,
"Yo I got a tape to play you back at the hotel"
I be like "Oh swell"
Unveil the numeric code to dial my room
And tell them to call me at noon
But of course there's no answering machine in my room
But a pretty young adorer
Who I swung on tour
And if it rings while we're alone
She'll answer the phone
And with the quickness she'll recite like a poem
DOVE:
"Hey, you done did the right thing, dial up my ring ring
Now you're waiting on the beep.
Say, I would love if you'd sing
The tune to Tru instead of fronting on the speak."
So no problemo, just play the demo
And at the end it's break out time
Please oh please don't press rewind
Cause I'll just lay it down the line
Hey how ya doing
Sorry ya can't get through
Why don't you leave your name and your number
And I'll get back to you
POS:
Hey how ya doing
Sorry ya can't get through
Why don't you leave your name and your number
And we'll get back to you.. peace
'Yo what's up man, this is Ronald Master down with the Fish Tank
Posse, man, you know man, so you know you can just hook
me up, True. You know we got this fly new jam called 'Swimming In the
Fish Tank', you know we gonna rock it man, you know
what I'm saying, but I just need your help, Prince Paul gave me your
number, you know man, you just gotta do that for me,
got this fly bassline, got these fly trombones in it man, so just hook
me up, man, just look out, all right, call me back
at 557-2223 all right man, just look out, all right, look out for a
brother man!'

I will show you fear in a handful of dust

oh well, okay

here's the silhouette the face always turned away
the bleeding color gone to black, dying like a day
couldn't figure out what made you so unhappy
shook your head to say no no no
and stopped for a spell
and stayed that way
oh well, okay
i got pictures, i just don't see it anymore
climbing hour upon hour through a total bore
with the one i keep where it never fades
in the safety of a pitch black mind
an airless cell that blocks the day
oh well, okay
if you a get a feeling the next time you see me
do me a favor and let me know
'cos it's hard to tell
it's hard to say
oh well, okay
oh well, okay
oh well, okay

I don't think I have to explain... if you've heard it, it's just such a beautiful song, I can't think of any other word to explain it

Good Day by The Dresden Dolls

So you dont want to hear about my good song?
And you dont want to hear about how i am getting on
With all the things that i can get done
The sun is in the sky & i am by my lonesome
So you don't want to hear about my good day?
You have better things to do than to hear me say

God its been a lovely day! everything is going my way
I took out the trash today and i'm on fire...

So you don't want to hear about my good friends?
You dont have the guts to take the truth or consequence
Success is in the eye of the beholder
And its looking even better over your cold shoulder

I'm not suggesting you up and line me up for questioning
But jesus think about the bridges you are burning
And i'm betting
That even though you knew it from the start
You'd rather be a bitch than be an ordinary broken heart

So go ahead and talk about your bad day...
I want all the details of the pain and misery
That you are inflicting on the others
I consider them my sisters and i'd like their numbers

God its been a lovely day! everything is going my way
I took up croquet today and i'm on fire

I picked up the pieces of my broken ego
I have finally made my peace as far as you and me go
But i'd love to have you up to see the place
& i'd like to do more than survive i'd like to rub it in your face.....

Hey! its been a lovely day! everything is going my way
I had so much fun today and i'm on fire
God it's been a lovely day everything's been going my way
Ever since you went away hey i'm on fire.....
I'm on fire...
I'm on fire...
So you dont want to hear about my good day?

well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
and he went down, but to my surprise
he come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear

but I busted a chair right across his teeth
and we crashed through the wall and into the street
kickin' and a' gougin' in the mud and the blood and the beer

from Jonny Cash's A BOY NAMED SUE. i just think it's a great piece of writing. especially that last line
