I want to practice solos and want to get one of those loop samplers. Anyone have one? What do you think? I see that Boss upgraded the RC-20 to a RC-20XL. Anyone have a Boomerang?
I'm just looking for insight into which kind I should get. What are the cool features, are they easy to use?
Basically, I want to use them to set up rhythm tracks so I can solo over them. |

Wouldn't it be easier to use a 4-track? |

I have an RC-20, it's a pretty cool thing...should do what you want, and maybe inspire some new solo techniques.
A multi-track recorder might be more useful tho, in the long run.. You can prolly get a decent digital unit for not much more than these things.

Yeah, get a multitrack for sure. Far more useful.

But don't you need to use mics for a multi-track? I just want to use it like a pedal. The RC-20XL allows you to put in a snare and high hat. I just want something to jam along with. You know?
By the way, anyone listen to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs? Just a guitar, drums, and singer. The guitarist Nick is able to use all these guitar layers live. Does he use a loop or are they pre-recorded? |

Live RC-20XL question:
Using the add-on pedals, can I record a loop (verse), then switch phrases to record another (chorus) and still be able to switch back to the verse loop, without ever touching the unit to write...? |

You can switch around, but can't play two loops at once.
Switching isn't the best either, it's a bit of a guess.

Hey Booksix, do you like the RC-20XL? I just want to put down a click track, record a bass line, record a rhythm track, loop it and solo over it. As you can see form the responses, people are advocating a 4 track. Seems like more than I need. |

it's great! if you don't need to do recording now or in the future, get this. I much rather tool around on this than have to setup my recording gear. and you can do you click, then switch phrases or overdub on the same and move onto your bass and rythym. You'll love it...
As for my question, I still dont think I got the answer I was looking for. I want to be able to record a rythym gtr VERSE during verse 1 (while singing verse 1) then switch phrases and record chorus 1 (while singing chor 1) then recall the verse loop and play over it for verse 2, and then switch to chorus loop with out touching the pedal with my hands (only the unit and add on pedals). Possible? If I can only do this with preRecordd phrases, I don't need it. Please let me know if I can do this on the fly...thanks!! |

Booksix, I believe the answer to your first question is no. You can't do all that with a FS-5U footpedal EVEN IF you have the verse and chorus already saved, unless you have multiple versions of them saved in ascending order on the 1-11 dial (because the not-included footswitch only adds one to the current setting.) If you record them live, the temporary memory of what you're doing gets erased when you switch phrases UNLESS you crouch down and hit save twice. This thing is seriously limited.
I borrowed one of these RC20 pedals and jammed with it yesterday. I had written the songs using a four-track. I plugged in a keyboard and used beats and the keys. For jamming instrumental versions, this pedal was fun because I could stay on a phrase as long as I wanted when playing leads. And for just hearing how layered parts that you're already written will sound, it's definitely easier to use the RC-20 than a handy, old 4-track. Plus it's more impressive for your friends.
If you don't tap the tempo just right, it's easy for a 20 second phrase to be a little off, even with this "loop quantize" fuction, which does help. (I think it's the last two taps that are important in a series, but I could be easily wrong.)
There's a metronome that tells you where 'one' is, so you could count out something pre-recorded, without having to play the sample.
I will try this and get back for a report. I should mention that some friends stopped by in the evening and as simply a phrase sampler - no switching phrases (just on/off/overdub) - it works pretty well in the live jam with other musicians.

hi guys,
reading your discussion, i was just wondering... Where could i find a sampler pedal such as RC20 (that I have) with two inputs like RC20, and two outputs... actually i'd like to find a multi-track phrase recorder pedal...
because i played on stage in Paris on sunday and i mix several guitar and voices parts on my RC20... then everythings goes to my guitar amp... it's like a little fuzzy, you see... I'd just like to have separate tracks.. then in the same loop, the guitar would go to the amp and the voice to the console... if someone has an idea...

How about the Boss/Roland SP-303, SP-505 or SP-606? Yamaha has RM1x, RS7000, SU700.
I think this is what booksix would want too. They all have Midi In/Out so a nice controller would make these stage usable.
I'm a low tech guy myself, when the conversation moves toward hip-hop and synths I get uncomfortable. |
