man mr cash is a genius. i didn't know shit about mr cash, but the only good thing about the horrible Channel 4's UK Music Hall Of Fame tv series from last year was that it made me want to know more about this man. so i have and he's a goddam genius. so i'm slowly accumulating his discography, with Live at San Quentin has to be the best live album i've ever heard...without any context, its fabulous, but then when you think about where he's playing, it just blows my mind.
i cannae wait to buy everything this great man has produced...
and i haven't even heard his cover of hurt yet!
just had to gush.

I am thankful that he recorded the "American" series albums before he died. Sure there are some weak tracks, but for the most part they are great. John's voice and the warm sound of the acoustic guitars ring through my head for days.

His cover of Hurt makes me cry. Everytime.
The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it. |

i'm not familiar with his stuff either benji, but my friend keeps making me listen and i can't help but like it.
on a side note, everyone has heard "ring of fire", JC version. have you heard the social D version from "live at the roxy"? it's almost like johnny wrote the song just for them, unlike that bs version of the rolling stones "under my thumb" they do.

Actually, June Cash co-wrote Ring of Fire with Merle Kilgore.
Johnny Cash was great, but so is Willie Nelson and he's still with us. |

Yes, Columbo!
I had to look up the title at IMDB, but I recall "The Pride of Jesse Hallam" as being very good: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0082939/ |

I don't like his voice, but some of his songs that I have heard have been good. Yeah he just has a one of those voices that doesn't agree with me.

I, too, discovered him only recently and love him lots. I especially love knowing that he wrote "I Walk The Line" as a tribute to his faithfulness to his wife and then turned around and had an affair with and left her for June Carter.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Catholics |

Although I hate the term "soul mate," I can't think of another term to describe John's relationship with June. Anyone who followed Johnny Cash knew he didn't have long to live after June died. She was his main reason for living. |

I just recently got into Cash, within the past few weeks. Before, all I'd heard was his cover of Will Oldham's I See a Darkness, which I thought was neat. I recently bought Live at Folsom Prison, which is fan-fucking-tastic. I need more.

I grew up listening to Cash. And forgot about him until I heard him again on U2's "Zooropa". Then I started to get into him again. Has anyone heard his cover of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus"?
At first I thought "No way is this going to work" but then after I listened to it closer....I thought I liked it better than the original.
I think what I like about Cash the most is that when he sings I feel like he is singing to me, and not a stadium of people. Does that make sense? There is something quite intimate about his singing. |

I dont like to post at night, but this time I will. Johnny Cash means more to me than any other musician, purely for a thing called love. That was the first record as a kid I obsessed about, it meant so much to me, I listened to it around 100 times. I must have been 5, These people that got into the man in black when he started covering NIN tracks, Depeche Mode tracks, you are wrong, you take him with the crunchy and the smooth but always love him. Enjoy sunday morning coming down, enjoy Jackson, enjoy a boy named sue, not shitty u2 covers.

I have been listening to John since I was a kid and I enjoy the American recordings as much as I enjoy the older classics like Flesh & Blood, What Is Truth, The Man in Black, and funny songs like Understand Your Man, Bad News, One Piece at a Time. |

i think they're lame too, but then, they're just as arbitrary as "married" or "divorced" or whatever..
i think the French Canadians have the right idea (never thought those words would come out of my mouth) with the whole not marrying thing. at least, not technically..

Is One Piece at a Time the song about an auto factory worker stealing a piece of a car each day? Must be. I like that song.
There was a good Fresh Air interview with Johnny Cash where he describing going out to chop wood one day and coming back home with his deep voice. His mom told him he had been blessed by God with his new voice. He obviously told the story better than that. |

Yep. A guy actually made a car that matched the description in the song: http://www.geocities.com/potatochippers/Onepiece.html |
