Wow I just watched "What the bleep do we know?"
Just wondering if anyone out there knows much about quantum physics. And if anyone wants to chat about it/share additional info.
Watching this movie really summerizes the tennants of quantum physics.
It really was inspiring and thrilling to hear these theories and how it scientifically proves we are all one, how much control we have over reality, that God is everywere, what addiction is and how everyone is pretty much addicted to something....and the power of positive thought and meditation. Wow it blew my mind. |

Ok... I am watching the film again... they just gave this one example of the control preceptions have on what people see.
The people in the Carribian could not literally see Columbus' ships coming because they had never seen the ships... they only could see them when a shaman saw it and told the people they could see it!

I have not seen that film. I have heard of it, and would like to, though.
I posted about the theory of nonlocality a while back. I think it is a fascinating concept, but no one bit. Are you familiar with this theory, Daisy Girl?

no, actually I must have missed your post glacial what's that about?
actually, I definately reccomend checking out this movie. it does a great job of explianing complex theories in layman's terms. even if you don't agree with it, it definately is eye opening. |

Here's a couple of tidbits....
you never really touch anything... as it never touches you.... because of the way ok and don't quote me on the scientific term here.... molecules have a field around them...
it is scientific fact that with all matter... about half the atoms or whatever... are "here" and half are in an alternative place.
not to be religious here but I think most of us can all agree that Jesus is a historical figure... basically they were saying that his comment that a mustard seed is the size of the kingdom of heaven... the only scientific theory that supports this is quantum physics... plus with utilizing the theories of quantum physics walking on water is possible.
cool stuff |

That's so cool Daisy! I actually enjoy having layman conversations about this subject, but I can't express myself very well through writing so I don't even want to start. I'd like to read more though. Maybe we should go and find a forum about quantum physich and infect the memebers with our love for Frank Black and his music, then at least some of them would post here... |

Maybe someone shoud start a thread about Jesus. Not to be religious either, but if you look at him as a hystorical figure, he was one helluva thinker. |

yeah... definately
i am watching the movie again for the 3rd time... it's one of those things that you pick up more each time.
The scientist talking now is talking about the whole two objects being at the same time in two places. they have taken photographs of the same one thing in two places.
It all reminds me about the matrix in a way...theoretically, with quantum physics you can travel backgward in time.
Another theory is what's going on in your mind has more impact than your external environment.
Your body is wired though peptides and receptors to seek out certian experiences...
For example for someone who is addicted to smoke.... you are going to seek that out. Over time, your cells change because they are geared toward seeking out that feeling....over time they warp.
When these cells reproduce, they are not as effective as the cells when you were born... this is what causes the aging proges.
Sorry I am so hot on this... it's so crazy...
I didn't catch the date but one summer recently, a group of 100 people from all countires meditated for a 25% drop in crime in Washington DC one summer. The Chief of police went on record as saying the only thing that would do that is a 2 foot snofall.
The meditators we successful in the end and the Police Department ended up endorsing the study...there was a 25% drop in crime.
Another example...a Japaneese scientist studied the molecular structure of water.
In one experiment he took a photo of a water from a dam... it looked kinda like an amobea. Then he took the same water to be blessed by a buddhist monk... that photo looks more like a pretty snowflake.
Then, he took distilled water. One one he put a label of Love, and other Thank you, one something to do with hate. He also did not touch one. He left them out over night.... the one with the hate message lookd like an yellowish brown amoeba. Thank you and Love lookd like pretty snowflakes. The regular distilled water looked like a pentagon shape.
The take away... is if this is what can be done to water? What can this do to humans who are 90% water.
This just blows my mind! |

ok thanks for the info... it's scary cuz the lady on their website is one of the people they interviewed in the movie. That sight didn't seem scientific-- at all! Now that casts a more cult like feel on the whole thing.
well i bet is something like some of the concepts are actually true quantum physics, but it does call the over all credibility into queston. especially the nature of some of the expriements.
Looks like I should try to read some more academic sources to find out the real deal. lol
But I do think there is a lot to be said for the power of positive thought. |

Not really anything to do with quantum physics, but the meditators story reminds me of a Fortean Times article about an experiment set up by scientists at a Greatful Dead concert. People at the concert were shown images on a projector and told to telepathically send them to 'receivers' , of course everybody was on drugs and in a trance like state, which was supossed to highten their telepathic powers. I think it had mixed results with alot of it being open to intrepertation.

It doesn't actually say that a mustard seed is the size of the kingdom of heaven, it says the kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed - its figurative, i.e. something that is considered small and worthless can grow into something huge.

The Bible says that a mustard seed is the smallest seed. This is not true. Some translators apparently changed the reference to say "the smallest of YOUR seeds," to make it sound more accurate.

*Yoda like hmmm*... yeah I think the movie was still interesting was a mish mash of real science and like phoney spiritual stuff. In hind site :)
Cheeseman... I think it's very intersting about that experiment.... ok I am not endorsing anything here... I actually advocate meditation to reach a higher spiritual level, but I do think that drugs to either actually increase or have the perception of increasing psychic ability!!
Oh Kathryn... are you feeling any better??? I thought I was doing pretty well to make it all the way to March with out any winter cold or flu.... guess it's my turn to have the sniffles!

I'm not a physicist, but by necessity I do know a little bit about it. Some whacked out stuff, though in my mind, it simply verifies that some of our models are wrong.

This sounds like a really interesting film, I'll have to look it up. Someone at my workplace had an issue with a poltergeist recently, and I've had experiences with one too a while back - we did some research on the internet and found theories for the phenomenon linked with abnormal electromagnetic activity, and quantum physics principals.
There's so much we still don't understand! I want to give up my job and start investigating! |

i find that interesting too. it's the electromagnetic force between atoms which means you never touch anything. the outside of atoms are negative, so when two surfaces try to touch, the negative atoms on the outside repel each other. atoms never touch.

Sorry. Can't say that I know even a little about the basic science. But it does seem that throughout our intellectual history we have always found paradox at the thresholds our scientific understanding, which is eventually resolved by fresh theory which generates its own apparent contradictions in turn. This is especially true at the micro- and macro-cosmic frontiers, meaning subatomic and cosmological. My own simple faith is that actuality, in contrast with collective and personal subjective realities, is not ambiguous. A "thing", meaning anything that can be referred to by the pronoun "it", is what it is and nothing else, and therefore will behave and relate only in ways consistent with its actual nature, which is singular. A thing will not possess multiple natures which allow a range of responses, "random" or whatever, to a given situation or context. Nature never surprises itself.
I realize that from some perspectives there are no discreet things, and that all things can legitimately be seen as intricasies of infinite complexity. However, I'm skeptical that this argues for indeterminacy at any level of actuality, be it micro, macro, or any point in between. |

have you read the bill bryson a short history of everything book? (its a science rather than a history book honest) its actually surprisingly intersting, obviously it doesnt go into much detail but its a good way of getting a basic understanding...its just so amazing how much we dont know..kinda wish i was better at physics

mua ha ha steve mua ha ha
i didn't frown today zub, i do understand why they are good, I just find myself arguing with the books a lot.
i think it's more science myth making things that bug me, for example (i don't know if any of you caught it) on channel 4 there was a program called supersize kids, there was this girl (16 years old - 24 stone) and her mother (21 stone) who were both going for gastric bypass surgery, the mothers excuse was they had a "fat gene" nothing to do with the super size bag of maltesers, the tube of pringles and the giant trifle the kid was eating. oh no.
fat gene. mumblemumblemumble
sorry, off on one, so anyway, the mother was justifying whit she was going to Belgium to have this surgery for her and her daughter, going to belgium because the NHS won't do gastric bypass surgery on under 18 year olds. She reckoned that because her mother and her grandmother were big ladies this was evidence of the so called fat gene that they had, she said they never ate anything to excess and everything in moderation (giant bag of maltesers giant tube of pringles and giant trifle) and that her daughter would die if she didn't lose the weight, that she hadn't pushed this kid into it and that surgery was just a tool for losing weight.
cuts to kid, why do you want the surgery, word for word "surgery is a tool for losing weight"
The girls father finds out a week before the surgery and comes round to try to talk her out of it, he says go to a health farm for three months they'll sort your eating and they'll get you excercising and you can lose the weight naturally, the girl said "what? they'll make me do excercise? and if I miss dinner it's tough? you want me on my feet all day?" and he said yes well it's the natural way to do it, if you stay here you'll carry on eating and getting bigger you have to change your lifestyle, you're so young surgery is so major, the girl says "surgery is just a tool, a healthfarm won't make me stick thin" bursts into tears and runs off, the mother does that thing that divorced parents love to do with the "well done" look how you've upset her now sort of thing and they go to have the surgery anyway.
this program made me mad, made me remember why I try not to watch the television so much.

And the reason why the kid WANTED to eat all that stuff couldn't have been genetic?
(Not that I think these people were particularly bright, just that the "omg the only raison ppl r overwate iz that thay eet 2 much lol!!!111!1" kind of thinking irks me.)
What are "Maltesers," anyway?
